Italian for Storing Fresh Pasta: Asking About Fridge, Freezer and Shelf Life

Learn to ask Italian shop staff how to store fresh pasta you are not cooking right away: fridge, freezer or a cool spot, and how long it keeps.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

At a fresh-pasta counter (un banco di pasta fresca) you often buy more than you will cook that day. This lesson gives you the practical Italian to ask how to store it: whether it goes in the fridge, whether it can be frozen, and how long it lasts. You will practise questions built on the verb durare (to last), the impersonal si può (can one / is it possible), and key nouns such as frigo, congelatore and scadenza. The register is polite but everyday, the kind of exchange you would have with a shop assistant while they wrap your pasta.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask how long fresh pasta keeps in the fridge
    • ask whether a product can be frozen and for how long
    • understand and use the words frigo, congelatore and scadenza
    • ask where to keep pasta if I am not cooking it immediately

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Quanto dura in frigo?

How long does it keep in the fridge?

    KWAHN-toh DOO-rah een FREE-goh

The most direct question about fridge shelf life. Use it after the assistant names the product.

    Si può congelare?

    Can it be frozen?

    see PWOH kon-jeh-LAH-reh

Impersonal si può plus the infinitive. Soft g in congelare, like English 'j'.

    Come si conserva?

    How should it be stored?

    KOH-meh see kon-SER-vah

A general opener when you do not yet know whether it needs cold or just a cool place.

Se non la cucino subito, dove la metto?

If I don't cook it right away, where do I put it?

    seh non lah koo-CHEE-noh SOO-bee-toh DOH-veh lah MET-toh

Uses la because pasta is feminine. Good when you want a location, not just a duration.

    Qual è la scadenza?

    What is the expiry date?

    kwahl eh lah skah-DEN-tsah

Asks about the date on the label. Scadenza is the deadline; do not confuse it with durata, the length of time.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Two patterns cover most of this conversation. First, Quanto dura...? (How long does ... last?) followed by a place phrase: Quanto dura in frigo? Quanto dura fuori dal frigo? Second, Si può...? (Can one ...?) plus an infinitive: Si può congelare? Si può tenere a temperatura ambiente? The verb conservare means to keep or store food, so Come si conserva? is a natural general question. Note that pasta fresca is feminine, so a following pronoun is la: la metto in frigo, la congelo.

    When to use it

Use Quanto dura...? when you already know where the product goes and only need a time frame. Use Si può...? when you are unsure whether an action is allowed or advisable, for example freezing. Use Dove la metto? when you want a location. If the assistant gives a number of days, you can confirm with Quindi dura due o tre giorni? (So it lasts two or three days?). Keep the tone polite by opening with Scusi or Mi scusi before your question.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, vorrei queste tagliatelle. Se non le cucino stasera, come si conservano?

    Good morning, I'd like these tagliatelle. If I don't cook them tonight, how should I store them?bwon-JOR-noh vor-RAY KWEH-steh tah-lya-TEL-leh seh non leh koo-CHEE-noh stah-SEH-rah KOH-meh see kon-SER-vah-noh

    B

Sì, si possono congelare. Le metta in congelatore, ma non oltre un mese. Controlli sempre la scadenza.

Yes, they can be frozen. Put them in the freezer, but no longer than a month. Always check the expiry date.see see POHS-soh-noh kon-jeh-LAH-reh leh MET-tah een kon-jeh-lah-TOH-reh mah non OL-treh oon MEH-zeh kon-TROL-lee SEM-preh lah skah-DEN-tsah

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, fresh pasta from a pastificio or a fresh counter is normally sold to be eaten soon, so staff expect questions about frigo and congelatore. The word frigo is the everyday term for refrigerator; frigorifero is the full form and sounds more formal. Congelatore is the freezer compartment or appliance, while surgelato describes commercially frozen food. Asking about scadenza refers to the date printed on the label, not to how long the pasta keeps once opened.

    One thing to watch for

Translating 'How long does it last?' as Quanto tempo dura? and then stopping, or using stare instead of durare.

Try this instead: Durare is the verb for lasting: Quanto dura in frigo? If you want to mention time explicitly, say Quanto tempo dura in frigo? Both are correct, but durare is essential; stare would change the meaning to 'how long is it located there'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Ask a shop assistant whether fresh ravioli can be frozen.

    Show a sample answer

    Si possono congelare i ravioli?

Si può / si possono plus the infinitive asks whether an action is possible. I ravioli is plural, so si possono agrees. Si può congelare il raviolo? would be correct for a single piece.

2You want to know how many days the pasta keeps in the fridge. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    Quanto dura in frigo?

Quanto dura asks about duration and in frigo specifies the place. Quanti giorni dura in frigo? is also correct and more explicit.

3The assistant says the pasta should stay in a cool place. How do you confirm the meaning of scadenza?

    Show a sample answer

La scadenza è la data scritta sulla confezione, giusto?

This checks that scadenza means the date on the package, not the storage time. You could also ask Dov'è la scadenza? if you cannot find it on the label.

    Take this with you

Ask Quanto dura in frigo? for shelf life, Si può congelare? for freezing, and Qual è la scadenza? for the date on the label; keep pasta fresca in frigo or congelatore as the staff advise.
