Italian for Urgent Thesis Printing at a Copy Shop Before a Deadline

Ask Italian copy shops for urgent thesis printing, check timing, and negotiate a realistic deadline with courteous, anxious-but-polite phrases.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

At an Italian copy shop (copisteria), the key skill is not just naming what you need, but asking whether it can be ready in time and what alternatives exist. You will learn to request urgent printing of a thesis (stampa urgente di una tesi), specify a deadline, ask how long it takes, and respond to staff constraints without sounding demanding. The register is anxious but courteous: use scusi, per favore, and conditional forms such as potrei or sarebbe possibile. This lesson gives you reusable patterns for the counter conversation, including binding, file format, and pickup timing, while leaving actual prices and policies to the shop.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for urgent thesis printing and state a clear deadline in Italian.
    • ask how long a print job takes and negotiate a realistic pickup time.
    • understand and respond to staff constraints and alternatives politely.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Buongiorno, mi serve una stampa urgente di una tesi.

Good morning, I need urgent printing of a thesis.

    bwon-JOR-no, mee SER-veh OO-na STAM-pa oor-JEN-teh dee OO-na TEH-zee

Opening request at the counter. Use buongiorno until mid-afternoon, buonasera later.

Mi serve entro domani mattina, è possibile?

I need it by tomorrow morning, is that possible?

    mee SER-veh EN-tro do-MA-nee mat-TEE-na, eh pos-SEE-bee-leh

States a deadline and asks for feasibility. Entro means by, within.

    Quanto tempo ci vuole?

    How long does it take?

    KWAN-toh TEM-poh chee VWOH-leh

Standard way to ask about turnaround time. Use it before agreeing to a pickup time.

Potrei averla entro le nove di domani?

Could I have it by nine tomorrow?

    po-TRAY ah-VER-lah EN-troh leh NOH-veh dee doh-MA-nee

Conditional potrei makes the request softer and more negotiable.

    Se non è possibile, c'è un'alternativa?

If it's not possible, is there an alternative?

seh nohn eh pos-SEE-bee-leh, cheh oon al-ter-na-TEE-vah

Use when staff say the deadline is tight. Invites options without pressuring.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is mi serve + object + entro + deadline, as in Mi serve la tesi rilegata entro domani mattina. To ask about feasibility, add è possibile? or sarebbe possibile? Sarebbe is more polite and slightly more tentative. For timing, use Quanto tempo ci vuole? or Quanto ci vuole per la stampa? If you need to soften a request, use the conditional: Potrei ritirarla domani? Potrebbe essere pronta entro le otto? These forms keep the anxious tone from sounding like a demand.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the counter or on the phone when you have a hard deadline. Start with a greeting and the request, then state the deadline, then ask about timing. For example: Buongiorno, mi serve una stampa urgente. Mi serve entro domani mattina, è possibile? Quanto tempo ci vuole? If the answer is no, ask Se non è possibile, c'è un'alternativa? Staff may mention rilegatura (binding), formato PDF, or copie. Do not assume a specific service is available; ask instead: Fate anche la rilegatura? Posso portare il file su chiavetta?

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, mi serve una stampa urgente di una tesi. Mi serve entro domani mattina, è possibile?

    Good morning, I need urgent printing of a thesis. I need it by tomorrow morning, is that possible?bwon-JOR-no, mee SER-veh OO-na STAM-pa oor-JEN-teh dee OO-na TEH-zee. mee SER-veh EN-troh doh-MA-nee mat-TEE-na, eh pos-SEE-bee-leh
    B

Domani mattina è un po' stretto. Quante copie e quante pagine sono?

Tomorrow morning is a bit tight. How many copies and how many pages are there?doh-MA-nee mat-TEE-na eh oon poh STRET-toh. KWAN-teh KOH-pyeh eh KWAN-teh PAH-jee-neh SOH-no
    A

Una copia, circa centoventi pagine. Quanto tempo ci vuole?

One copy, about one hundred and twenty pages. How long does it take?OO-na KOH-pya, CHEER-kah chen-toh-VEN-tee PAH-jee-neh. KWAN-toh TEM-poh chee VWOH-leh
    B

Se la porta adesso, forse entro le undici. Se non è possibile, possiamo fare dopodomani.

If you bring it now, maybe by eleven. If that's not possible, we can do the day after tomorrow.seh lah POR-tah ah-DES-soh, FOR-seh EN-troh leh OON-dee-chee. seh nohn eh pos-SEE-bee-leh, pos-SYA-mo FAH-reh doh-poh-doh-MA-nee

A little context goes a long way

In many Italian copy shops, urgency is handled as a practical negotiation, not a guaranteed right. A polite conditional and a clear deadline help more than repeated insistence. Address staff with lei unless they invite tu. Regional usage varies: in some areas copisteria is the common term, while in others you may hear centro copie or tipografia for larger print jobs.

    One thing to watch for

Ho bisogno la stampa urgente domani.

Try this instead: Ho bisogno is not used with a direct object this way. Say Mi serve una stampa urgente per domani or Ho bisogno di una stampa urgente per domani. Example: Mi serve la tesi stampata entro domani mattina.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask whether tomorrow morning is possible for urgent printing?

    Show a sample answer

Mi serve entro domani mattina, è possibile?

This states the deadline with entro and asks for feasibility with è possibile. You could also say Sarebbe possibile averla entro domani mattina? for a softer tone.

2How do you ask how long the print job takes?

    Show a sample answer

    Quanto tempo ci vuole?

This is the standard timing question. Quanto ci vuole per la stampa? is also correct and slightly more specific.

3Staff say the deadline is tight. How do you ask for an alternative politely?

    Show a sample answer

    Se non è possibile, c'è un'alternativa?

This invites options without demanding. You could also ask Cosa mi consiglia? or C'è un modo per averla prima?

    Take this with you

Lead with a greeting, state the deadline with entro, ask Quanto tempo ci vuole?, and use the conditional to keep an urgent request courteous and negotiable.
