Italian for a Button Shank Repair: Asking a Tailor to Fix or Adjust a Bottone

Learn Italian tailor vocabulary for button shanks (gambo): describe a tight button, ask to lengthen or shorten the shank, and name two-hole and four-hole buttons politely.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When a jacket button sits so flat that it presses the fabric or won't pass through a thick buttonhole, the problem is usually the shank — in Italian, il gambo. This lesson gives you the exact words and polite requests to take a garment to a sarto or a merceria and ask for a button shank repair or adjustment. You will learn to describe the button type (a due fori, a quattro fori), say what feels wrong (Il bottone è troppo stretto), and ask whether the shank can be lengthened or shortened. The register is technical but courteous, the kind of short exchange used for a quick alteration, and it avoids assuming anything about price, timing or shop policy.

    By the end, you can…

    • name the parts of a button in Italian, including il gambo and i fori.
    • ask a tailor to lengthen, shorten or rebuild a button shank.
    • explain that a button is too tight or too loose using clear Italian phrases.
    • ask polite questions about a quick alteration without assuming price or timing.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Il bottone è troppo stretto: tocca la stoffa.

The button is too tight: it touches the fabric.

    eel bot-TOH-neh eh TROP-poh STRET-toh: TOK-kah lah STOF-fah

Use this when the button sits flat against the cloth and needs a taller shank.

    Si può allungare il gambo?

    Can the shank be lengthened?

    see pwoh al-loon-GAH-reh eel GAHM-boh

Polite, impersonal question using si può; useful when you want more space under the button.

    Si può accorciare il gambo?

    Can the shank be shortened?

    see pwoh ak-kor-CHAR-eh eel GAHM-boh

The opposite request, for a button that stands too far from the fabric.

È un bottone a quattro fori.

    It is a four-hole button.

    eh oon bot-TOH-neh ah KWAT-troh FOH-ree

Names the button type; a due fori means two holes.

Vorrei far rifare il gambo, per favore.

I would like to have the shank redone, please.

    vor-RAY far ree-FAH-reh eel GAHM-boh, per fah-VOH-reh

A courteous opening request for a repair, not a demand.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is si può + infinitive, which asks whether an action is possible without naming a person: Si può allungare il gambo? (Can the shank be lengthened?) and Si può accorciare il gambo? (Can it be shortened?). To state the problem first, use è troppo + adjective: Il bottone è troppo stretto (too tight) or è troppo largo (too loose). For the button type, say è un bottone a due fori or a quattro fori. These frames let you describe, then request, in two short steps.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at a merceria or sarto when you need a small, specific alteration. Start with the problem: Il bottone è troppo stretto. Then ask: Si può allungare il gambo? If the button stands away from the cloth, say è troppo largo and ask Si può accorciare il gambo? Add per favore to keep the tone polite. If you are unsure of the word, point and say questo gambo, which keeps the exchange clear without over-explaining.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, a merceria sells threads, buttons and notions, while a sarto or sartoria handles tailoring and alterations; small repairs are often discussed in person. Use polite conditional forms such as vorrei and si può, and let the shop confirm what it can do rather than assuming a service, price or turnaround. Regional words vary: in some areas a small alteration shop may be called a riparazione or simply sarto.

    One thing to watch for

Translating 'buttonhole' as gambo or using foro for the shank.

Try this instead: Il gambo is the shank, the thread column under the button; l'occhiello is the buttonhole; i fori are the holes in the button itself. Say Il bottone è troppo stretto e tocca la stoffa, not Il gambo è troppo stretto, when the problem is the button sitting too flat.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask politely whether the shank can be lengthened?

    Show a sample answer

    Si può allungare il gambo?

This uses the impersonal si può plus the infinitive allungare, a polite way to ask about a possible adjustment. You could also say Potrebbe allungare il gambo? in a more personal polite form.

2A button has two holes. How do you describe it in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

È un bottone a due fori.

The pattern a + number + fori names the button type. A four-hole button is un bottone a quattro fori; both are standard and clear.

3The button stands too far from the fabric. What problem phrase and request fit?

    Show a sample answer

Il bottone è troppo largo. Si può accorciare il gambo?

Troppo largo describes a button that is too loose or stands away; accorciare il gambo asks to shorten the shank. If the issue were tightness, you would use troppo stretto and allungare instead.

    Take this with you

Describe the problem first with è troppo stretto or è troppo largo, then ask si può allungare or accorciare il gambo, and name the button as a due fori or a quattro fori.
