How to Say 'I Don't Eat ___' in Italian: Meat, Dairy and Nuts

Learn the Italian pattern non mangio to state personal food restrictions for meat, dairy and nuts, and see how it differs from asking what is in a dish.

Friends talking over coffee in a city café

To state a personal food restriction in Italian, the key structure is non mangio, literally 'I don't eat', followed by the food. This lesson teaches you to name meat, dairy and nuts in that frame, and to add small qualifiers such as mai ('never') or più ('anymore'). It also shows why this is different from asking about ingredients: non mangio describes what you do, while questions with c'è or contiene ask what a dish holds.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I don't eat meat, dairy products or nuts using non mangio.
    • name common foods in each of those three categories in Italian.
    • add mai or più to make a restriction stronger or more specific.
    • tell the difference between stating a restriction and asking about ingredients.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Non mangio la carne.

    I don't eat meat.

    non MAN-joh la KAR-neh

General statement about meat; the article la is normal here.

    Non mangio i latticini.

    I don't eat dairy products.

    non MAN-joh ee lat-TEE-chee-nee

latticini covers milk-based products such as cheese, butter and yogurt.

    Non mangio la frutta secca.

    I don't eat nuts.

    non MAN-joh la FROOT-tah SEK-kah

frutta secca literally means 'dried fruit' but in everyday Italian it means nuts.

    Non mangio mai il pesce.

    I never eat fish.

    non MAN-joh my eel PEH-sheh

mai after the verb makes the restriction absolute.

    Non mangio più il glutine.

    I don't eat gluten anymore.

    non MAN-joh pyoo eel GLOO-tee-neh

più after the verb means 'no longer' or 'anymore'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The frame is non + mangio + article + food. The article matters: non mangio la carne, non mangio i latticini, non mangio la frutta secca. With a mass noun you can also drop the article in a more general way: non mangio carne. Both are correct, but the version with the article sounds more specific. To soften a restriction, add solo ('only'): non mangio solo la carne means 'I only don't eat meat', not 'I eat only meat'.

    When to use it

Use non mangio when you are talking about yourself and your own habits. If you need to ask about a dish, switch to a question: C'è la carne in questo piatto? ('Is there meat in this dish?') or Questo piatto contiene latticini? ('Does this dish contain dairy?'). The difference is important: Non mangio la carne states your restriction; C'è la carne? asks for information. In a restaurant, you can combine them: Non mangio la carne. C'è carne in questa pasta?

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Scusi, non mangio la carne. C'è carne in questo piatto?

Excuse me, I don't eat meat. Is there meat in this dish?SKOO-zee, non MAN-joh la KAR-neh. cheh KAR-neh een KWEH-stoh PYAT-toh?
    B

No, non c'è carne. Però contiene burro e formaggio.

No, there's no meat. But it contains butter and cheese.noh, non cheh KAR-neh. peh-ROH kon-TEE-eh-neh BOOR-roh eh for-MAJ-joh
    A

Allora non posso: non mangio i latticini.

    Then I can't: I don't eat dairy products.al-LOH-rah non POS-soh: non MAN-joh ee lat-TEE-chee-nee
    B

Capisco. Le porto un piatto senza latticini e senza frutta secca.

    I understand. I'll bring you a dish without dairy and without nuts.kah-PEES-koh. leh POR-toh oon PYAT-toh SEN-tsah lat-TEE-chee-nee eh SEN-tsah FROOT-tah SEK-kah

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, food restrictions are usually taken seriously, but the vocabulary can vary by region. latticini is standard for dairy products, while formaggio is specifically cheese. frutta secca is the common term for nuts, but it can also include dried fruit in some contexts, so if you mean only nuts you may need to name them: noci, mandorle, nocciole. In the south, some speakers say frutta secca mostly for nuts; in the north, the phrase can be broader.

    One thing to watch for

Using non mangio with no article in every situation, as in non mangio carne, and assuming it always sounds natural.

Try this instead: Both non mangio carne and non mangio la carne are correct, but the article often sounds more specific and natural in conversation. Use non mangio la carne when you mean meat as a category, and non mangio carne when you are speaking generally. With countable items, the plural article is normal: non mangio i latticini, not non mangio latticini.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I don't eat dairy products' in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    Non mangio i latticini.

The plural article i is used with latticini. You may also hear non mangio latticini without the article, but the version with i is the standard, specific form.

2What is the difference between Non mangio la carne and C'è la carne?

    Show a sample answer

Non mangio la carne states a personal restriction; C'è la carne? asks whether meat is present in a dish.

The first is about you and your habits. The second is a question about the food. Both are useful in a restaurant, but they do different jobs.

3Add 'anymore' to Non mangio il glutine.

    Show a sample answer

    Non mangio più il glutine.

più goes after the verb to mean 'no longer' or 'anymore'. You could also say Non mangio il glutine più, but the position after mangio is the most common.

    Take this with you

Use non mangio + article + food to state your own restrictions, and switch to c'è or contiene when you need to ask about ingredients.
