How to Say 'I Am Vegan' in Italian and Avoid Animal Products
Learn to state you are vegan in Italian, ask whether dishes contain animal products, and name dairy, eggs, meat and fish so you can eat safely.

If you are vegan in Italy, the single most useful sentence is Sono vegano (said by a man) or Sono vegana (said by a woman). Italian marks the speaker's gender on this adjective, so choose the ending that matches you. From there, you need a small set of food words: latte (milk), formaggio (cheese), uova (eggs), carne (meat), pesce (fish) and burro (butter). Vegetarians in Italy normally eat dairy and eggs, so if you say only sono vegetariano, you may be served a cheese omelette. This lesson gives you the exact phrases for restaurants, shops and hosts, plus the grammar that holds them together.
By the end, you can…
- say I am vegan, choosing the correct -o or -a ending for my gender.
- ask whether a dish contains milk, cheese, eggs, meat or fish.
- name common animal products and ask for a dish without them.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Sono vegano.
I am vegan. (said by a man)
SOH-noh veh-GAH-noh
Use if you are male. The adjective agrees with the speaker, not with the person listening.
Sono vegana.
I am vegan. (said by a woman)
SOH-noh veh-GAH-nah
Use if you are female. This is the standard contemporary form; both are fully neutral in register.
Questo piatto contiene latte o formaggio?
Does this dish contain milk or cheese?
KWEH-stoh PYAHT-toh kon-tee-EH-neh LAHT-teh oh for-MAHD-joh
A polite, direct question in a restaurant. Contiene is the third-person form of contenere.
Ci sono uova o burro?
Are there eggs or butter?
chee SOH-noh WOH-vah oh BOOR-roh
Ci sono means 'there are'. Uova is irregular: the singular is l'uovo, but the plural changes gender to le uova.
Per me solo verdure, per favore.
Just vegetables for me, please.
pehr MEH SOH-loh vehr-DOO-reh pehr fah-VOH-reh
A simple fallback when a dish cannot be adapted. Verdura is the common singular, verdure the plural.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
To describe what you do not eat, use non + verb + object: Non mangio carne (I don't eat meat), Non mangio pesce (I don't eat fish), Non mangio uova (I don't eat eggs). To ask about a specific dish, use the question form: Questo piatto contiene...? (Does this dish contain...?) or Ci sono...? (Are there...?). For a request, use senza (without): Vorrei un piatto senza formaggio (I would like a dish without cheese). Vorrei is the polite 'I would like', softer than voglio.
When to use it
At a restaurant, say Sono vegano/a first, then ask about the dish: Questo piatto contiene latte o uova? At a bar or bakery, ask Ci sono prodotti vegani? (Are there vegan products?) At a friend's home, a softer form works well: Non mangio prodotti di origine animale (I don't eat animal products). If you eat honey but not dairy, say it explicitly, because many Italians assume vegan excludes honey but may not think to mention it. In northern cities such as Milan and Turin, vegan options are widely understood; in smaller southern towns, be ready to explain with the food words above.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buonasera, avete piatti vegani?

In Italy, vegetariano normally includes dairy and eggs, so it is not a safe substitute for vegan. Vegano is now widely understood, especially in cities and among younger speakers, but in traditional restaurants you may need to list the ingredients you avoid. Saying per favore and using vorrei keeps requests polite; a bare voglio can sound demanding.
One thing to watch for
Saying Sono vegetariano when you mean vegan, or using voglio instead of vorrei.
Try this instead: Say Sono vegano (man) or Sono vegana (woman), then specify: Non mangio latte, formaggio, uova, carne o pesce. For requests, use Vorrei un piatto senza formaggio, not Voglio un piatto senza formaggio.

Questo piatto contiene uova?
Contiene is the third-person singular of contenere. You could also ask Ci sono uova in questo piatto? with the same meaning.
3How do you ask for a dish without cheese?
Show a sample answer
Vorrei un piatto senza formaggio.
Senza means 'without'. Vorrei is the polite conditional; Posso avere un piatto senza formaggio? is another valid, slightly more direct option.
Say Sono vegano or Sono vegana, then use contiene, ci sono and senza with the words latte, formaggio, uova, carne and pesce to eat safely in Italy.
