Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you present a new restaurant or food product in Italian, you need more than menu vocabulary. You must describe the concept, its location, target customers, and what makes it different. This lesson teaches you how to do that in clear, natural Italian at an intermediate level. You will learn phrases to introduce your idea, explain your inspiration, and answer questions about your business. The focus is on entrepreneurship: selling the vision, not just listing dishes.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a restaurant or food product concept in Italian using key phrases.
    • explain the inspiration and target audience for my concept.
    • answer basic questions about my business idea in Italian.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Il mio concept è un ristorante che unisce cucina tradizionale e design moderno.

My concept is a restaurant that combines traditional cuisine and modern design.

    eel MEE-oh KON-tsept eh oon ree-sto-RAN-teh keh oo-NEE-sheh koo-CHEE-nah tra-dee-tsyo-NAH-leh eh dee-ZAIN mo-DER-noh

Use this to introduce your restaurant concept. 'Concept' is common in Italian business speak; you can also say 'idea' or 'progetto'.

L'idea è di offrire prodotti locali a prezzi accessibili.

The idea is to offer local products at affordable prices.

    lee-DEH-ah eh dee of-FREE-reh pro-DOT-tee lo-KAH-lee ah PRET-tsee at-tches-SEE-bee-lee

Use this to state your mission. 'Prezzi accessibili' means affordable prices; 'convenienti' also works.

Ci rivolgiamo a un pubblico giovane, attento alla sostenibilità.

We target a young audience, attentive to sustainability.

    chee ree-VOL-jah-moh ah oon POOB-blee-koh JOH-vah-neh at-TEN-toh al-lah so-sten-ee-bee-lee-TAH

Use this to describe your target customers. 'Ci rivolgiamo a' is a common way to say 'we target'.

Il nostro punto di forza è la qualità delle materie prime.

Our strength is the quality of the raw ingredients.

    eel NOS-troh POON-toh dee FOR-tsah eh lah kwa-lee-TAH DEL-leh mah-TEH-ryeh PREE-meh

Use this to highlight what makes you different. 'Punto di forza' means strength or competitive advantage.

Vorremmo aprire in centro, vicino al mercato.

We would like to open downtown, near the market.

    vor-REM-moh ah-PREE-reh een CHEN-troh vee-CHEE-noh al mer-KAH-toh

Use this to talk about location. 'In centro' means downtown; 'vicino a' means near.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe what your concept does, use 'un ristorante che...' or 'un prodotto che...' followed by a verb in the present tense. For example: 'Un ristorante che offre solo piatti vegetariani' (A restaurant that offers only vegetarian dishes). You can also use 'si basa su...' (is based on): 'Il concept si basa sulla cucina di strada' (The concept is based on street food). To express purpose, use 'per' + infinitive: 'per attirare i turisti' (to attract tourists).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when pitching to investors, partners, or customers. For a formal presentation, start with 'Il nostro progetto...' (Our project...). In a casual conversation, you can say 'Sto pensando di aprire...' (I'm thinking of opening...). When answering questions, use 'L'obiettivo è...' (The goal is...) to stay focused. For example: 'L'obiettivo è creare un ambiente accogliente' (The goal is to create a welcoming environment).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Allora, parlami del tuo nuovo progetto. Che tipo di ristorante vuoi aprire?

So, tell me about your new project. What kind of restaurant do you want to open?al-LOH-rah par-LAH-mee del TOO-oh noo-OH-voh pro-JET-toh keh TEE-poh dee ree-sto-RAN-teh VWOH-ee ah-PREE-reh

A little context goes a long way

In Italian business contexts, especially in the north, presentations tend to be direct and focused on practical details. In the south, personal relationships and storytelling may play a larger role. When describing your concept, avoid overusing English terms; Italians often prefer Italian equivalents like 'progetto' instead of 'project' or 'punto di forza' instead of 'strength'. However, some English words like 'concept' and 'design' are widely accepted in food and fashion. Use 'Lei' in formal pitches and 'tu' with peers or in casual settings.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'per' + infinitive when the subject of the purpose clause is different from the main clause, e.g., 'Per aprire un ristorante, ci vuole passione' is correct, but 'Per io aprire un ristorante' is wrong.

Try this instead: The infinitive alone is correct: 'Per aprire un ristorante, ci vuole passione' (To open a restaurant, you need passion). Do not add a subject pronoun before the infinitive. 'Per' + infinitive is used when the subject is the same: 'Studio per migliorare' (I study to improve). When the subjects differ, use 'perché' + a conjugated verb: 'Perché io apra un ristorante, ci vuole passione' is awkward; more naturally 'Per aprire un ristorante, ci vuole passione' or 'Affinché io apra un ristorante...'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'Our concept is a food truck that offers typical regional dishes'?

    Show a sample answer

Il nostro concept è un food truck che offre piatti tipici regionali.

This uses 'che offre' to describe what the truck does, and 'piatti tipici regionali' for regional dishes. You could also say 'cucina regionale'.

2Translate: 'We target families who love traditional cuisine.'

    Show a sample answer

Ci rivolgiamo a famiglie che amano la cucina tradizionale.

'Ci rivolgiamo a' is the standard phrase. 'Famiglie' is plural of 'famiglia'. You could also say 'Il nostro target sono le famiglie...'.

3What phrase would you use to say 'Our strength is the location'?

    Show a sample answer

Il nostro punto di forza è la posizione.

'Punto di forza' means strength. 'Posizione' means location. Alternatively, 'La nostra forza è la posizione' is also correct.

    Take this with you

To describe a food concept in Italian, use 'Il mio concept è...', 'L'idea è di...', and 'Il punto di forza è...'. Keep it clear and focus on what makes your idea unique.
