Italian for Intermediate Learners: Describing a Problem and Proposing a Solution
Learn to state a problem and suggest a solution in Italian using structures like 'Il problema è...' and 'Una soluzione potrebbe essere...', with a practical dialogue and practice.

At intermediate level, you already describe what happens and why. This lesson focuses on the next step: naming a problem clearly and putting forward a solution. You will learn fixed frames such as 'Il problema è che...' and 'Una possibile soluzione è...', plus softer suggestions with 'potremmo' and 'si potrebbe'. The aim is not to list causes, but to move the conversation toward action.
By the end, you can…
- state a problem clearly using 'Il problema è che...' and 'C'è un problema con...'.
- propose one or more solutions using 'Una soluzione è...', 'Potremmo...' and 'Si potrebbe...'.
- respond to someone else's proposed solution and negotiate a next step.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Standard way to introduce a problem; 'che' introduces a clause with a conjugated verb.

Use 'con' + noun when the problem concerns a thing or system, not a full clause.

'Potrebbe essere' softens the proposal; the infinitive follows directly.

We could organize a shuttle from the parking lot to the center.

'Potremmo' + infinitive is a collaborative suggestion, common in meetings.
Si potrebbe anche incentivare il car pooling.
One could also encourage carpooling.

'Si potrebbe' is impersonal and useful when you do not name who should act.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core frame is: problem + solution. For the problem, use 'Il problema è che...' followed by a clause, or 'C'è un problema con...' followed by a noun. For the solution, use 'Una soluzione è...' or 'Una possibile soluzione sarebbe...' followed by an infinitive or a noun. Examples: 'Il problema è che i prezzi sono saliti.' / 'Una soluzione è ridurre gli sprechi.' / 'C'è un problema con la viabilità; una soluzione sarebbe creare più piste ciclabili.' Notice that the solution often appears as an infinitive: 'aumentare', 'ridurre', 'creare'.
When to use it
Use these frames in meetings, community discussions, or everyday problem-solving. 'Potremmo...' is best when you are part of the group that will act: 'Potremmo parlarne con il comune.' 'Si potrebbe...' is more impersonal and cautious: 'Si potrebbe chiedere un finanziamento.' In formal contexts, prefer 'sarebbe opportuno' or 'suggerirei di' + infinitive. In informal conversation, 'Che ne dici di...?' works well: 'Che ne dici di prendere il treno?' Avoid presenting a solution as a command unless you have authority; the conditional and impersonal forms keep the tone cooperative.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In Italian professional and community settings, proposals are often softened with the conditional ('potrebbe', 'sarebbe') or impersonal 'si potrebbe'. Direct commands can sound abrupt. In informal talk among friends, 'Che ne dici di...?' or 'Perché non...?' is natural. Regional differences are mostly lexical: 'autobus' is standard, while 'corriera' is common in some areas for intercity buses.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Il problema è che' followed by a noun, as in 'Il problema è che il traffico.'
Try this instead: After 'che' you need a full clause with a verb: 'Il problema è che il traffico è aumentato.' If you want a noun, use 'C'è un problema con il traffico' or 'Il problema è il traffico.'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Translate: 'The problem is that there aren't enough buses.'
Show a sample answer
Il problema è che non ci sono abbastanza autobus.
'Il problema è che' introduces a clause; 'non ci sono' agrees with plural 'autobus'. 'Il problema è la mancanza di autobus' is also correct but changes the focus to a noun.
2Propose a solution using 'Potremmo...' for reducing waste.
Show a sample answer
Potremmo ridurre gli sprechi.
'Potremmo' + infinitive is a collaborative suggestion. 'Si potrebbe ridurre gli sprechi' is also valid and more impersonal.
3Make this more polite: 'Bisogna aumentare le corse.'
Show a sample answer
Si potrebbe aumentare le corse. / Sarebbe opportuno aumentare le corse.
The impersonal 'si potrebbe' or conditional 'sarebbe opportuno' softens the obligation. 'Dovremmo aumentare le corse' is also acceptable if you include yourself.
State the problem with 'Il problema è che...' or 'C'è un problema con...', then offer a solution with 'Una soluzione è...', 'Potremmo...' or 'Si potrebbe...'. Keep proposals cooperative, not commanding.
