Italian for Intermediate Learners: Changing Your Travel Itinerary Politely

Learn to say you want to change your itinerary in Italian, ask about available options, and handle dates, times, and reservations in a natural conversation.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When travel plans shift, you need more than basic Italian. You need to explain what you want to change, ask what alternatives exist, and confirm the new arrangement without sounding abrupt. This lesson focuses on the practical language for adjusting an itinerary: trains, tours, hotel dates, and guided visits. You will practice polite requests with vorrei and potrei, learn how to ask about availability, and see how Italians often soften a change request with a brief reason. The goal is not to memorize every travel word, but to control a small set of patterns you can reuse in many situations.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I would like to change my itinerary or a specific booking.
    • ask what alternative dates, times, or options are available.
    • confirm a new arrangement and ask about any difference in price or conditions.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Vorrei cambiare il mio itinerario.

I would like to change my itinerary.

    vohr-RAY kahn-BYAH-reh eel MEE-oh ee-tee-neh-RAH-ryoh

Standard polite request. Use vorrei rather than voglio to sound courteous with staff.

    Sarebbe possibile spostare la data?

Would it be possible to move the date?

    sah-REB-beh pos-SEE-bee-leh spoh-STAH-reh lah DAH-tah

Sarebbe possibile is a very useful softener. Spostare means to move or postpone.

    Quali alternative ci sono?

    What alternatives are there?

    KWAH-lee ahl-ter-nah-TEE-veh chee SOH-noh

Use this to ask for options without naming them yourself. Alternative is feminine plural.

    Preferirei partire più tardi.

I would prefer to leave later.

    preh-feh-ree-RAY par-TEE-reh pyoo TAR-dee

Preferirei is a polite conditional. Più tardi means later; più presto means earlier.

C'è una penale per la modifica?

Is there a penalty for the change?

    cheh OO-nah peh-NAH-leh per lah moh-DEE-fee-kah

Penale is common for a change fee or cancellation charge. Ask this before confirming.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The conditional makes requests sound polite and less demanding. Vorrei means I would like; potrei means I could or may I. Compare Voglio cambiare la prenotazione, which can sound blunt, with Vorrei cambiare la prenotazione, which is appropriate with an agent. You can also use Sarebbe possibile plus an infinitive: Sarebbe possibile cambiare la data? Sarebbe possibile parlare con un responsabile? The pattern is fixed enough to reuse with many verbs: cambiare, spostare, anticipare, posticipare, annullare.

    When to use it

Use these forms when you are asking a person to adjust something, not when you are simply stating a fact. At a train ticket desk, say Vorrei spostare la partenza a domani. On the phone with a hotel, say Sarebbe possibile anticipare il check-in? If you need to cancel, use Vorrei annullare la prenotazione, then ask C'è una penale? In less formal situations, such as with a friend or a small tour operator you know, Puoi spostare la visita? is fine. With official staff, keep the conditional.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buongiorno, vorrei cambiare il mio itinerario. Avevo prenotato il tour per martedì.

Good morning, I would like to change my itinerary. I had booked the tour for Tuesday.bwohn-JOHR-noh, vohr-RAY kahn-BYAH-reh eel MEE-oh ee-tee-neh-RAH-ryoh. ah-VEH-voh preh-noh-TAH-toh eel toor per mar-teh-DEE

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, politeness with service staff often includes a greeting before the request and a brief reason. A simple Buongiorno, vorrei... is more effective than jumping straight to the demand. Regional usage varies: in the north, people may be more direct and brief; in the south, a short exchange of pleasantries is common before business. Penale and costi aggiuntivi are standard in written conditions, while a small operator may simply say non c'è problema. Always confirm the change in writing when money is involved.

    One thing to watch for

Using voglio cambiare il mio itinerario because it matches the English I want to change my itinerary.

Try this instead: Voglio can sound demanding to staff. Use Vorrei cambiare il mio itinerario or Sarebbe possibile cambiare il mio itinerario? For example, at a hotel: Vorrei spostare la partenza a domenica, per favore.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely ask whether it is possible to move your booking to Friday?

    Show a sample answer

Sarebbe possibile spostare la prenotazione a venerdì?

Sarebbe possibile plus the infinitive spostare is a polite, standard request. Vorrei spostare la prenotazione a venerdì is also correct and slightly more personal.

2You want to ask if there is a change fee. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

C'è una penale per la modifica?

Penale is the usual word for a penalty or change fee. You could also ask Ci sono costi aggiuntivi? Both are valid; penale is more specific to conditions.

3You prefer to leave later. Which phrase expresses that politely?

    Show a sample answer

    Preferirei partire più tardi.

Preferirei is the conditional of preferire and sounds polite. Preferisco partire più tardi is also possible, but it states a preference more directly.

    Take this with you

For itinerary changes in Italian, lead with vorrei or sarebbe possibile, name the change clearly, and ask about penale or costi aggiuntivi before you confirm.
