Italian for Nutrition Talk: Saying 'This Is High in Protein'
Learn to describe foods by their nutritional strengths in Italian, using essere ricco di, contenere and fare bene, with polite restaurant and shopping phrases.

When English speakers want to praise a food's health value, they often reach for a direct translation like 'Questo è alto in proteine'. That sounds unnatural in Italian. Italian normally describes nutritional strength with the adjective ricco ('rich') plus di, or with the verb contenere ('to contain'). This lesson teaches you to say that a food is high in protein, fibre or vitamins, to ask whether a dish is good for you, and to explain why you avoid certain products. The focus is on health benefits, not on medical diets or calorie counting, so you can talk about food in a natural, everyday way.
By the end, you can…
- say that a food is high in protein, fibre or vitamins using natural Italian structures
- ask whether a dish or product is healthy and explain why I choose it
- distinguish essere ricco di from contenere and use both correctly
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
The key pattern is essere ricco di + noun: Il salmone è ricco di omega-3. La quinoa è ricca di proteine. Note that ricco behaves like a normal adjective and agrees in gender and number: ricco, ricca, ricchi, ricche. The preposition di does not change. A second pattern is contenere + noun: Il formaggio contiene calcio. I legumi contengono ferro. Use contenere when you are stating a fact about what is inside a food, and essere ricco di when you are emphasising that the amount is high.
When to use it
Use essere ricco di in everyday conversation, menus and articles about healthy eating: Il pesce azzurro è ricco di grassi buoni. Use contenere when comparing products or reading labels: Questo yogurt contiene meno zuccheri. To talk about health benefits, use fare bene a: La verdura fa bene alla salute. To say something is bad for you, use fare male: Troppi dolci fanno male. These expressions are common in informal and neutral registers, while a doctor might prefer more technical vocabulary.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In Italy, food talk often blends pleasure and health: saying a dish è leggero e nutriente is a compliment, not a warning. At a restaurant, asking è ricco di proteine? is perfectly polite and normal. Descriptions of food as più sostanziose ('more filling') or più leggere ('lighter') vary from household to household and from person to person rather than following a strict north–south divide, so treat such labels as individual preferences. Regional food words also vary, so listen for local names for the same ingredient.
One thing to watch for
Questo cibo è alto in proteine.
Try this instead: Alto means 'tall' or 'high' in physical position, not in nutritional content. Say Questo cibo è ricco di proteine or Questo cibo contiene molte proteine. Use alta only for things like alta qualità ('high quality') or alta pressione ('high pressure').
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you say 'Yogurt is high in protein' in natural Italian?
Show a sample answer
Lo yogurt è ricco di proteine.
Essere ricco di is the standard structure. You could also say Lo yogurt contiene molte proteine, which shifts the focus to what it contains.
2Complete with the correct form: I legumi ___ ricchi di fibre.
Show a sample answer
sono
The subject legumi is masculine plural, so the verb is sono and the adjective is ricchi. A singular alternative would be Il legume è ricco di fibre.
3Translate: 'Does this dish contain a lot of vitamins?'
Show a sample answer
Questo piatto contiene molte vitamine?
Contenere is used for what a food contains. Molte agrees with the feminine plural vitamine. You could also ask È ricco di vitamine? for a more emphatic question.
To talk about nutrition in Italian, avoid 'alto in'. Use essere ricco di for 'high in' and contenere for 'contains', and remember that adjectives like ricco must agree in gender and number.
