Italian for Beginners: Say You Love Pop or Are a Big Jazz Fan

To talk about music in Italian, the most useful structure is the verb piacere, which literally means 'to be pleasing'. You say Mi piace il pop ('I like pop'), but Mi piacciono i Coldplay ('I like Coldplay') because the verb agrees with the thing liked, not with you. For stronger feelings, use amo ('I love') or adoro ('I adore'). To say you are a big fan, use essere un fan or essere un appassionato. The verb piacere works backwards: the thing you like is the subject. Say Mi piace la musica classica for one thing, and Mi piacciono le canzoni italiane for more than one thing. With a verb, use the singular: Mi piace cantare. To name a person, use a + name: Mi piace ascoltare Vasco Rossi, or simply Mi piace Vasco Rossi.
When to use it
Use mi piace for a normal liking, amo or adoro for strong love, and essere un fan for enthusiasm about an artist or band. Compare with anche io ('me too'), invece ('instead, on the other hand') and preferisco ('I prefer'). For example: A me piace il pop, invece mia sorella preferisce il jazz. In negative sentences, put non before the verb: Non mi piace il rap.

In Italy, music taste is common small talk, and saying mi piace or sono un fan is neutral and friendly. Amo is warmer and more emphatic, so use it when you truly mean it. Regional differences matter more in pronunciation than in these phrases: in much of the north, 's' between vowels is often voiced, while many southern varieties use a stronger, longer consonant sound. Standard written Italian uses il pop, il rock and il jazz, but in speech many young people simply say ascolto pop or ascolto rock.

Mi piace i Coldplay.
Try this instead: Use the plural verb with a plural object: Mi piacciono i Coldplay. The verb agrees with the thing liked, not with the speaker. Compare Mi piace la canzone ('I like the song') and Mi piacciono le canzoni ('I like the songs').
