Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you book accommodation in Italy, you often need to explain what you prefer and ask for changes. This lesson focuses on one practical skill: discussing accommodation preferences and understanding requests. You will learn the key verb preferire, useful adjectives such as tranquillo and silenzioso, and polite request forms with vorrei and potrei. The goal is not to memorize a script, but to build flexible sentences you can adapt to hotels, apartments, B&Bs, and shared flats. Pay attention to adjective agreement and to the difference between direct requests and softer conditional forms.

    By the end, you can…

    • say what kind of room or accommodation I prefer using preferire and descriptive adjectives.
    • understand and make polite requests about room location, noise, and amenities.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Preferisco una camera tranquilla.

    I prefer a quiet room.

    preh-feh-REE-skoh OO-nah KAH-meh-rah trahn-KWEEL-lah

Standard neutral sentence. Preferisco is first-person present of preferire. Tranquilla agrees with camera, which is feminine singular.

    Preferirei una camera silenziosa.

I would prefer a quiet room.

    preh-feh-ree-REH-ee OO-nah KAH-meh-rah see-lehn-TSYOH-zah

Conditional preferirei sounds softer and more polite than preferisco, especially with hotel staff or landlords.

Vorrei una camera che non dia sulla strada.

I would like a room that does not face the street.

    vor-REH-ee OO-nah KAH-meh-rah keh nohn DEE-ah SOO-lah STRAH-dah

Vorrei is the standard polite request form. Dia is present subjunctive of dare after che; common in careful intermediate speech.

C'è troppo rumore? Potrei cambiare camera?

Is there too much noise? Could I change rooms?

    cheh TROHP-poh roo-MOH-reh? poh-TREH-ee kahm-BYAH-reh KAH-meh-rah

Potrei is the conditional of potere and softens the request. Use it when asking for a change without sounding demanding.

Preferisco una sistemazione con la colazione inclusa.

I prefer accommodation with breakfast included.

    preh-feh-REE-skoh OO-nah see-steh-mah-TSYOH-neh kohn lah koh-lah-TSYOH-neh een-KLOO-zah

Sistemazione is a general word for accommodation. Inclusa agrees with colazione, feminine singular.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is preferire + noun phrase, or preferire + infinitive. Examples: Preferisco una camera tranquilla. Preferisco dormire con la finestra aperta. The verb preferire belongs to the -ire group with -isc- in singular and third-person plural: preferisco, preferisci, preferisce, preferiamo, preferite, preferiscono. For polite requests, switch to the conditional: preferirei, vorrei, potrei. Compare Preferisco una camera doppia, which states a preference, with Vorrei una camera doppia, which is a request in a booking context. Adjective agreement matters: camera tranquilla, posto tranquillo, camere tranquille.

    When to use it

Use preferisco with friends, family, or when stating your general travel style: Preferisco una camera tranquilla, non mi importa della vista. Use preferirei or vorrei with receptionists, hosts, or agencies: Preferirei una camera tranquilla, se possibile. Use potrei for permission or possibility: Potrei vedere un'altra camera? In shared housing, you may hear Io preferirei che tu non facessi rumore dopo le undici, where the subjunctive follows preferirei che. For simple accommodation requests, the conditional forms are usually enough and are widely understood across Italy.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buonasera, ho una prenotazione per due notti. Preferisco una camera tranquilla, se possibile.

    Good evening, I have a reservation for two nights. I prefer a quiet room, if possible.bwoh-nah-SEH-rah, oh OO-nah preh-noh-tah-TSYOH-neh pehr DOO-eh NOHT-teh. preh-feh-REE-skoh OO-nah KAH-meh-rah trahn-KWEEL-lah, seh pohs-SEE-bee-leh
    B

    Of course. I can give you a room on the third floor, away from the elevator.CHEHR-toh. leh POHS-soh DAH-reh OO-nah KAH-meh-rah ahl TEHR-tsoh PYAH-noh, lohn-TAH-noh dahl-lah-shehn-SOH-reh

Grazie. C'è troppo rumore la sera? Preferirei una camera che non dia sulla strada.

Thank you. Is there too much noise in the evening? I would prefer a room that does not face the street.GRAH-tsyeh. cheh TROHP-poh roo-MOH-reh lah SEH-rah? preh-feh-ree-REH-ee OO-nah KAH-meh-rah keh nohn DEE-ah SOO-lah STRAH-dah
    B

No, è tranquilla. Se vuole, posso anche mostrarle la camera prima.

No, it is quiet. If you like, I can also show you the room first.noh, eh trahn-KWEEL-lah. seh VWOH-leh, POHS-soh AHN-keh moh-STRAHR-leh lah KAH-meh-rah PREE-mah

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, accommodation requests are usually softened with conditionals such as vorrei, preferirei, and potrei. Direct imperatives like Voglio una camera tranquilla can sound abrupt in a hotel or agency. In informal contexts, such as messaging a landlord or flatmate, Preferisco una camera tranquilla is fine. Regional differences exist: in some northern cities, people may be more direct; in the south, a warmer, more indirect tone is often appreciated. When in doubt, use Vorrei or Preferirei with a smile.

    One thing to watch for

    Preferisco una camera tranquillo.

Try this instead: The adjective must agree with the noun. Camera is feminine singular, so use tranquilla: Preferisco una camera tranquilla. If you are talking about a posto letto, which is masculine, say Preferisco un posto letto tranquillo. Always check the gender and number of the noun before choosing the adjective ending.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I would prefer a quiet room' politely to a hotel receptionist?

    Show a sample answer

    Preferirei una camera tranquilla.

Preferirei is the first-person conditional of preferire and sounds polite. Preferisco una camera tranquilla is also correct but more direct; in a hotel context, the conditional is usually preferred.

    2Translate: 'Could I change rooms?'

    Show a sample answer

    Potrei cambiare camera?

Potrei is the conditional of potere and softens the request. Posso cambiare camera? is grammatically correct but less polite; it can sound more like a demand depending on tone.

3Complete with the correct adjective form: Preferisco una sistemazione ___ (quiet).

    Show a sample answer

    Preferisco una sistemazione tranquilla.

Sistemazione is feminine singular, so the adjective takes the feminine singular ending -a. If you used silenziosa, that would also be correct: Preferisco una sistemazione silenziosa.

    Take this with you

Use preferisco to state what you like and preferirei or vorrei to make polite accommodation requests. Check adjective agreement with the noun, and use potrei to ask for changes without sounding demanding.
