When you are invited to someone's home in Italy, the most appreciated words are not about the recipe but about the welcome. This lesson teaches elementary-level phrases to thank your host for having you and to praise the meal in a way that highlights their hospitality. You will learn when to use each phrase and how to avoid common mistakes.

    By the end, you can…

    • thank a host for inviting me to their home.
    • compliment a meal while focusing on the host's hospitality.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Grazie per avermi invitato.

    Thank you for inviting me.

    GRAH-tsee-eh pehr ah-VEHR-mee een-vee-TAH-toh

Use when you arrive or when you leave. If you are female, say 'invitata' instead of 'invitato'.

    Grazie per avermi ospitato.

Thank you for having me (hosting me).

    GRAH-tsee-eh pehr ah-VEHR-mee os-pee-TAH-toh

This directly thanks the host for their hospitality. Female guests say 'ospitata'.

    È stato tutto delizioso.

    Everything was delicious.

    eh STAH-toh TOOT-toh deh-lee-TSYOH-zoh

A general compliment about the meal. Use 'stata' if you are talking about a feminine noun like 'la cena'.

    Mi sono sentito molto bene.

    I felt very welcome.

    mee SOH-noh sehn-TEE-toh MOL-toh BEH-neh

Focuses on how the host made you feel. Female speakers say 'sentita'.

Grazie di cuore per la sua ospitalità.

Thank you sincerely for your hospitality.

    GRAH-tsee-eh dee KWOH-reh pehr lah SOO-ah os-pee-tah-lee-TAH

Formal, for an older host or someone you do not know well. Use 'tua' instead of 'sua' with friends.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To thank someone for a past action, use 'grazie per' + the infinitive of the verb. For example: 'Grazie per avermi invitato' (Thank you for inviting me) or 'Grazie per avermi ospitato' (Thank you for hosting me). The past participle ends in -o for a male speaker and -a for a female speaker: 'invitato/invitata', 'ospitato/ospitata'.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are a guest in someone's home. 'Grazie per avermi ospitato' is warmer and more specific than a simple 'grazie'. To praise the meal, say 'È stato tutto delizioso' or 'Mi è piaciuto tutto'. Avoid saying only 'bravo' about the cooking; instead, link the food to the host's generosity: 'Grazie, sei stato molto generoso' (Thank you, you were very generous).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, thanking a host for 'ospitalità' is often more valued than complimenting the cooking. A guest may bring a small gift like wine or dessert, but the verbal thanks should focus on the welcome. Use formal 'Lei' with older hosts or acquaintances, and informal 'tu' with friends and family.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Grazie per avermi invitato' when you mean 'Thank you for having me' after staying overnight.

Try this instead: Use 'Grazie per avermi ospitato' for hosting in general, including an overnight stay. 'Invitato' only refers to the invitation, not the hospitality. For example: 'Grazie per avermi ospitato, è stata una bella serata.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Thank you for having me' to a female host you know well?

    Show a sample answer

    Grazie per avermi ospitata.

The past participle agrees with the speaker's gender, not the host's. If the speaker is female, use 'ospitata'. If male, 'ospitato'. Both are correct depending on the speaker.

2What phrase would you use to compliment the meal while focusing on hospitality?

    Show a sample answer

Grazie, è stato tutto delizioso e mi sono sentito molto bene.

This combines a compliment about the food with a comment on how welcome you felt. You could also say 'Grazie per la sua ospitalità' in formal contexts.

3How would you thank an older host formally for their hospitality?

    Show a sample answer

Grazie di cuore per la sua ospitalità.

'Sua' is the formal possessive for 'your'. With a friend, you would say 'tua': 'Grazie di cuore per la tua ospitalità.'

    Take this with you

Thank the host for the welcome, not just the food. Use 'Grazie per avermi ospitato' and add a compliment like 'È stato tutto delizioso' to show you appreciated both the meal and the hospitality.
