Includes practice questions and sample answers.

Buying stamps in Italy is straightforward once you know a few key phrases. At a post office (ufficio postale), you will usually take a number from a machine and wait for your turn at the counter (sportello). This lesson gives you the exact Italian you need to ask for stamps for postcards, specify how many you want, and ask whether a rate is for Italy or abroad. You will also learn how to check the price before paying, so there are no surprises at the counter.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for stamps for postcards in Italian.
    • say how many stamps I need and ask about international rates.
    • understand and respond to a postal clerk's basic questions about destinations and quantities.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Vorrei dei francobolli per queste cartoline.

I would like some stamps for these postcards.

    vor-RAY dee fran-koh-BOL-lee pair KWAY-stay kar-toh-LEE-nay

Use 'vorrei' for a polite request. 'Dei' is an indefinite article meaning 'some' before a plural masculine noun.

Mi servono cinque francobolli per l'estero.

I need five stamps for abroad.

    mee SAIR-voh-noh CHEEN-kway fran-koh-BOL-lee pair LESS-tay-roh

'Mi servono' literally means 'they are necessary to me' and is the natural way to say 'I need' for plural items. For one item, use 'mi serve'.

Quanto costa spedire una cartolina negli Stati Uniti?

How much does it cost to send a postcard to the United States?

    KWAN-toh KOH-stah spay-DEE-ray OO-nah kar-toh-LEE-nah NYAY-lee STAH-tee oo-NEE-tee

Use 'negli' before countries beginning with a vowel or s+consonant, like 'negli Stati Uniti'. For other countries, use 'in' or 'per'.

    Qual è la tariffa internazionale?

    What is the international rate?

    kwal eh lah tah-REEF-fah in-tair-nats-yoh-NAH-lay

'Tariffa' means rate or fare. This is useful when you want to confirm the exact price before buying.

    Posso pagare con la carta?

    Can I pay by card?

    POS-soh pah-GAH-ray kon lah KAR-tah

Most Italian post offices accept cards, but asking first is polite and practical, especially in smaller towns.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say what you need, use 'mi serve' for one item and 'mi servono' for more than one: 'Mi serve un francobollo' (I need one stamp), 'Mi servono tre francobolli' (I need three stamps). To ask the price, use 'Quanto costa...?' for a single action or item, and 'Quanto costano...?' for plural items: 'Quanto costano questi francobolli?' (How much do these stamps cost?).

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the counter when the clerk asks 'Dimmi' or 'Prego'. If you are sending postcards within Italy, say 'per l'Italia'. For other countries, name the destination: 'per la Germania', 'per il Giappone', 'negli Stati Uniti'. If you are unsure, ask 'Qual è la tariffa per l'estero?' (What is the rate for abroad?). The clerk may ask 'Quante ne vuole?' (How many do you want?), so be ready to answer with a number.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, 'ufficio postale' is the standard term, and 'Poste Italiane' is the national service. Many offices use a number system: take a ticket ('prendi il numero') and wait for your number to appear. Small offices may have a single queue. 'Francobollo' is the normal word for a stamp; 'bollo' alone usually refers to a revenue stamp or tax stamp, so use the full word.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Ho bisogno di francobolli' for 'I need stamps' in a shop.

Try this instead: 'Ho bisogno di...' is grammatically correct but sounds more like a personal need. At a counter, 'Mi servono dei francobolli' or 'Vorrei dei francobolli' is more natural and polite. For example: 'Mi servono cinque francobolli per l'estero.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I need three stamps for these postcards' in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

Mi servono tre francobolli per queste cartoline.

'Mi servono' is used for plural items, and 'tre francobolli' follows directly. 'Per queste cartoline' specifies the purpose. You could also say 'Ho bisogno di tre francobolli per queste cartoline', which is correct but slightly less idiomatic at a counter.

2Ask the clerk the price to send a postcard to Germany.

    Show a sample answer

Quanto costa spedire una cartolina in Germania?

'Quanto costa' asks the price for one action. 'In Germania' is the common way to say 'to Germany'. You may also hear 'per la Germania' in some regions, which is also acceptable.

3The clerk asks 'Quante ne vuole?' What does this mean and how could you answer?

    Show a sample answer

It means 'How many do you want?' You could answer 'Ne vorrei cinque' or 'Cinque, per favore.'

'Ne' replaces the item already mentioned, and 'vorrei' is the polite form. A simple number with 'per favore' is also perfectly natural.

    Take this with you

At an Italian post office, start with 'Vorrei dei francobolli per queste cartoline', use 'mi servono' for the quantity, and ask 'Quanto costa...?' to confirm the rate before you pay.
