How to Say You Can't Commit Weekly in Italian: Accepting a Hobby Invitation Part-Time
Learn friendly Italian phrases to accept a hobby group invitation while explaining you can't come every week, using non tutte le settimane, quando posso and ogni tanto.

You have been invited to join a neighborhood hobby afternoon: a chess circle, a choir, a drawing group. You would like to go, but you cannot promise to be there every week. In Italian, the honest and friendly way to handle this is to accept first, then limit your commitment with a few set phrases. The key expressions are non tutte le settimane (not every week), quando posso (when I can) and ogni tanto (every now and then). This lesson gives you reusable sentences for that exact conversation, plus questions you can ask the organizer about how the group works.
By the end, you can…
- accept an invitation to a hobby group in Italian.
- explain that I cannot come every week using non tutte le settimane.
- offer a flexible alternative with quando posso and ogni tanto.
- ask a group organizer practical questions about how the meetings work.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Grazie dell'invito, mi fa piacere venire.
Thanks for the invitation, I'd be glad to come.
GRAH-tseh deh-leen-VEE-toh, mee fah pyah-CHEH-reh veh-NEE-reh
Warm acceptance. Use it before you mention any limitation; it keeps the tone positive.
Però non tutte le settimane riesco a venire.
But I can't manage to come every week.
peh-ROH non TOOT-teh leh seh-tee-MAH-neh ree-EH-sko ah veh-NEE-reh
The core sentence for your goal. Però softens the limitation after the acceptance.
Posso venire quando posso, va bene?
I can come when I can, is that okay?
POS-soh veh-NEE-reh KWAN-doh POS-soh, vah BEH-neh
Checks that a flexible arrangement is acceptable. Va bene? invites a yes or a counter-suggestion.
Se riesco, passo ogni tanto.
If I can, I'll drop by every now and then.
seh ree-EH-sko, PAS-soh OH-nyee TAN-toh
Casual and non-committal. Good for a neighborhood group where people come and go.
Come funziona di solito? Ci si vede sempre lo stesso giorno?
How does it usually work? Do you always meet on the same day?
KOH-meh foon-TSYOH-nah dee SOH-lee-toh? chee see VEH-deh SEM-preh loh STES-soh JOR-noh
A practical question for the organizer. Ci si vede is the impersonal 'we see each other' form.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern accetto + ma/però + limit is the safest structure. Start with Grazie, mi fa piacere or Volentieri, then add Però non tutte le settimane riesco a venire. If you want to sound more open, replace the limit with a condition: Vengo quando posso. Note that riesco a venire means 'I manage to come'; it is softer than non posso venire, which can sound like a flat refusal. Ogni tanto means 'every now and then' and works as a frequency adverb: passo ogni tanto, vengo ogni tanto.
When to use it
Use non tutte le settimane when the group meets weekly and you want to be honest without rejecting the invitation. Use quando posso when you genuinely intend to attend irregularly and want the organizer to know you are not a reliable weekly member. Use ogni tanto for a lighter, more casual promise, common in neighborhood groups where attendance is relaxed. If the organizer asks for a firm commitment, you can answer: Non posso garantire ogni settimana, ma mi piacerebbe far parte del gruppo. This states your limit clearly while keeping your interest visible.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Italian hobby and neighborhood groups are often informal, and organizers usually prefer an honest 'when I can' answer to a promise you cannot keep. Non tutte le settimane is neutral and polite; ogni tanto is more casual and fits a relaxed circle. In some groups, especially those renting a space, regular attendance may matter for practical reasons, so asking Come funziona di solito? is both normal and appreciated. Avoid a bare non posso venire, which can sound like a refusal of the group itself.
One thing to watch for
Saying Non posso venire tutte le settimane as a direct translation of 'I can't come every week'.
Try this instead: Non posso venire tutte le settimane can sound like a blanket refusal. Prefer Però non tutte le settimane riesco a venire, which keeps your willingness visible. If you want to be explicit, say Non posso garantire ogni settimana, ma vengo volentieri quando posso.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you accept the invitation first, then say you cannot come every week?
Show a sample answer
Grazie dell'invito, mi fa piacere! Però non tutte le settimane riesco a venire.
It accepts warmly with mi fa piacere, then limits frequency with non tutte le settimane riesco a venire. Volentieri! instead of mi fa piacere is also fine.
2Which phrase means 'every now and then' and how would you use it in a sentence about attending?
Show a sample answer
Ogni tanto. Example: Se riesco, passo ogni tanto.
Ogni tanto is a frequency expression meaning 'every now and then'. Vengo ogni tanto is equally correct; passo adds a casual 'drop by' nuance.
3Ask the organizer how the group usually works and whether the meeting day is fixed.
Show a sample answer
Come funziona di solito? Ci si vede sempre lo stesso giorno?
Come funziona di solito? asks about the general arrangement, and Ci si vede sempre lo stesso giorno? checks whether the day is fixed. Come vi organizzate? is a valid alternative.
Accept first with Grazie dell'invito, mi fa piacere, then limit your commitment with Però non tutte le settimane riesco a venire. Offer flexibility with quando posso or ogni tanto, and ask Come funziona di solito? to understand the group before you promise anything.
