When you are in a small Italian town and hear about a local festival, concert, or sagra, you may need to ask whether tickets are still available and whether you can buy them right there. This lesson teaches you polite, reusable questions for a tourist office or a bar — the two places where locals often sell tickets informally. You will learn key words like biglietti disponibili, si possono comprare qui, and esaurito, and how to use them naturally without sounding like a guidebook.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask politely whether tickets for a local event are still available.
    • ask if I can buy tickets on site at a tourist office or bar.
    • understand and use the word esaurito to mean sold out.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Scusi, ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili per l'evento di stasera?

Excuse me, are there still tickets available for tonight's event?

    SKOO-zee, chee SO-no an-KO-ra bee-LYET-tee dee-spo-NEE-bee-lee per le-VEN-to dee sta-SEH-ra

Polite opening at a tourist office or bar. Use Scusi to get attention. Stasera means this evening; change to oggi, domani, or the event name as needed.

Si possono comprare qui i biglietti?

    Can tickets be bought here?

    see POS-so-no kom-PRA-re kwee ee bee-LYET-tee

Asks whether on-site purchase is possible. Use this at a bar or small venue. The passive si possono is common and polite.

    È tutto esaurito?

    Is it all sold out?

    eh TOOT-to e-zow-REE-to

Direct but polite way to ask if tickets are gone. Esaurito is the standard word for sold out. Use a rising intonation for a question.

Vorrei due biglietti, se ce ne sono ancora.

I would like two tickets, if there are still any.

    vor-RAY DOO-eh bee-LYET-tee, se che ne SO-no an-KO-ra

Use when you already know you want to buy. Vorrei is the polite conditional of volere. Change due to the number you need.

Posso pagare con la carta o solo in contanti?

Can I pay by card or only in cash?

    POS-so pa-GA-re kon la KAR-ta o SO-lo een kon-TAN-tee

Ask about payment method at small events. Many informal sales prefer cash, but this question checks without assuming.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is Ci sono ancora + [noun]? to ask if something is still available. For tickets, say Ci sono ancora biglietti? Add disponibili for emphasis: Ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili? To ask about buying on site, use Si possono comprare qui? or Si comprano qui? Both are correct; si possono is slightly more formal. To ask if something is sold out, use È esaurito? or È tutto esaurito? For example: Scusi, ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili? — Sì, si possono comprare qui. — Perfetto, vorrei due biglietti.

    When to use it

Use these questions at a tourist office (ufficio turistico) or a bar (bar) that acts as a ticket point for a small local event. Start with Scusi to be polite. If you are at a bar, you can also ask Il bar vende i biglietti per l'evento? If the answer is no, ask Dove si possono comprare? At a tourist office, staff may say Sono disponibili solo online or Sono esauriti. If tickets are available, you can say Vorrei due biglietti, per favore. If you need to check payment, ask Posso pagare con la carta? Keep your tone friendly and patient; small events often have informal sales.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    Of course, we accept card. That's ten euros in total.CHER-to, at-chet-TYA-mo la KAR-ta. SO-no DYEH-chee EW-ro een TOOT-to

A little context goes a long way

At small local events in Italy, tickets are often sold informally at bars, tabacchi, or by volunteers, not always through a box office. Politeness matters: use Scusi to open and grazie at the end. If you hear è esaurito, it means sold out; don't push for exceptions. In some regions, especially in the south, you may be asked to pay in cash, but card acceptance is increasingly common. Always ask rather than assume.

    One thing to watch for

Saying Sono disponibile? to ask if tickets are available, treating biglietti as singular.

Try this instead: Biglietti is plural, so use Ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili? or Sono disponibili i biglietti? If you mean one ticket, say È disponibile un biglietto? Match the verb to the noun.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask at a tourist office if there are still tickets for tonight's event?

    Show a sample answer

Scusi, ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili per l'evento di stasera?

This uses the polite opening Scusi, the pattern ci sono ancora, and the key word disponibili. You could also say Per l'evento di stasera, ci sono ancora biglietti? Both are correct.

2What do you say to ask if you can buy tickets here at the bar?

    Show a sample answer

Si possono comprare qui i biglietti?

This uses the passive si possono comprare to ask about on-site purchase. You could also ask Si comprano qui i biglietti? or Posso comprare i biglietti qui? All are acceptable.

3How do you ask if the event is sold out?

    Show a sample answer

    È tutto esaurito?

Esaurito is the standard word for sold out. You can also ask È esaurito? or Non ci sono più biglietti? The meaning is clear and polite.

    Take this with you

Use Scusi to open, then Ci sono ancora biglietti disponibili? to check availability, Si possono comprare qui? to ask about on-site purchase, and È tutto esaurito? to ask if it's sold out. Keep it polite and flexible for bars or tourist offices.
