In this lesson you will learn to ask another person what their favorite food is, and to answer the same question yourself. The key question is Qual è il tuo cibo preferito? Notice that Italian uses qual è without an apostrophe, and that the possessive tuo agrees with the noun it describes, not with the speaker. You will also practice the very common verb piacere, which literally means 'to be pleasing' and works differently from English 'to like'. To ask about someone else's favorite food, use Qual è il tuo cibo preferito? The word tuo means 'your' and changes form with the noun: il tuo cibo preferito (masculine singular), la tua pizza preferita (feminine singular). To answer about yourself, say Il mio cibo preferito è... or simply Mi piace... For example: Il mio cibo preferito è il gelato. Mi piace anche la pizza. Remember that Italian normally uses the definite article with general foods: Mi piace la pasta, not Mi piace pasta.
When to use it
Use Qual è il tuo cibo preferito? in informal situations with one person. With a stranger, an older person, or someone you address formally, use Qual è il suo cibo preferito? The possessive suo replaces tuo. In a group, ask Qual è il vostro cibo preferito? When you answer, Mi piace is the most natural short response, while Il mio cibo preferito è... sounds fuller and more explicit. Both are correct; choose based on how much detail you want to give.

In Italy, food is a frequent and friendly topic of conversation, and asking about someone's favorite food is a normal way to get to know them. At a host family's table, a simple Mi piace molto is a polite compliment. Note that regional food traditions differ widely: pizza and pasta are national staples, but a person from Naples, Bologna, or Palermo may name a local specialty. Treat their answer as personal and regional, not as a rule about all Italians.
One thing to watch for
Saying Mi piace le verdure, using the singular piace with a plural noun.
