Italian for Walk-In Dining: Asking for a Table for Two (or More)

Learn to request a table for a specific number of people in Italian when you arrive without a reservation, including polite formulas, numbers, and common replies.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you walk into an Italian restaurant without a booking, you need a short, polite request for a table for a certain number of people. The key phrase is 'Un tavolo per due, per favore' (A table for two, please). This lesson focuses only on walk-in seating, not on making a reservation by phone or online. You will learn how to state the number of people, use the polite request form, and understand the waiter's likely response. We will also note regional differences in how staff may address you.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for a table for a specific number of people in a restaurant without a reservation.
    • understand and respond to a waiter's questions about how many people are in my party.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Un tavolo per due, per favore.

    A table for two, please.

    oon TAH-voh-loh pehr DOO-eh, pehr fah-VOH-reh

Standard polite request when you enter a restaurant without a reservation.

Un tavolo per quattro, per favore.

    A table for four, please.

    oon TAH-voh-loh pehr KWAHT-troh, pehr fah-VOH-reh

Replace 'due' with any number: tre (three), quattro (four), cinque (five), etc.

    Siamo in due.

    There are two of us.

    SYAH-moh een DOO-eh

Useful if the waiter asks 'Quanti siete?' (How many are you?). Change 'due' to the correct number.

    Avete un tavolo?

    Do you have a table?

    ah-VEH-teh oon TAH-voh-loh

A direct but polite way to ask if seating is available. Use with a rising intonation.

    Possiamo sederci fuori?

    Can we sit outside?

    pos-SYAH-moh seh-DEHR-chee FWO-ree

Ask for outdoor seating if you prefer it. 'Dentro' means inside.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 'Un tavolo per' + number + ', per favore'. 'Un tavolo' means 'a table' (masculine singular). 'Per' means 'for', and the number follows directly: 'per due', 'per tre', 'per quattro'. Always add 'per favore' to keep the request polite. For example: 'Un tavolo per cinque, per favore.' If you need to say 'There are X of us', use 'Siamo in' + number: 'Siamo in tre.' This is a complete sentence and very common when answering the waiter's question.

    When to use it

Use these phrases only when you arrive without a reservation and want to be seated. Do not use them to book a table in advance; for that, you would say 'Vorrei prenotare un tavolo' (I would like to reserve a table). At the entrance, catch the waiter's eye and say 'Un tavolo per due, per favore.' If the restaurant is full, you may hear 'Mi dispiace, è tutto pieno' (I'm sorry, it's all full) or 'C'è un'attesa di dieci minuti' (There's a ten-minute wait). In that case, you can ask 'Quanto tempo?' (How long?) or simply say 'Grazie, tornerò' (Thanks, I'll come back).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, walk-in seating is common at trattorias and pizzerias, but popular restaurants may ask if you have a reservation ('Avete prenotato?'). If you haven't, they may still seat you or ask you to wait. In the south, staff may address you as 'signore' or 'signora'; in the north, 'buonasera' is standard. Tipping is not required, but leaving a small amount is appreciated.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Un tavolo per due persone, per favore' by translating 'people' literally.

Try this instead: In Italian, the number alone is enough: 'Un tavolo per due, per favore.' Adding 'persone' is not wrong, but it sounds less natural in a quick request. Use 'persone' only if you need to clarify, e.g., 'Un tavolo per due persone, non per due bambini' (A table for two adults, not two children).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask for a table for four people, politely?

    Show a sample answer

Un tavolo per quattro, per favore.

This uses the pattern 'Un tavolo per' + number + ', per favore'. 'Quattro' means four. You could also say 'Un tavolo per quattro persone, per favore', but the shorter form is more common.

2The waiter asks 'Quanti siete?' You are a group of three. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    Siamo in tre.

'Siamo in tre' means 'There are three of us'. It directly answers 'Quanti siete?' (How many are you?). You could also say 'Tre, per favore', but 'Siamo in tre' is the standard reply.

3You want to sit outside. What phrase do you use?

    Show a sample answer

    Possiamo sederci fuori?

This means 'Can we sit outside?'. 'Possiamo' means 'we can', 'sederci' means 'to sit ourselves', and 'fuori' means 'outside'. For inside, replace 'fuori' with 'dentro'.

    Take this with you

Use 'Un tavolo per [number], per favore' for walk-in seating. Add 'Siamo in [number]' if asked how many you are. Keep it short and polite.
