Italian for Urgent Medical Help: Asking for a Doctor Immediately
Learn to say you need a doctor immediately in Italian, use the emergency number 112, and describe an urgent medical situation clearly and politely.

In a medical emergency in Italy, clear and direct language matters more than perfect grammar. This lesson teaches you the core sentence "Ho bisogno di un medico subito" (I need a doctor immediately), how to call the single European emergency number 112, and how to describe symptoms so that an operator or bystander can help quickly. You will also learn when to use formal Lei and when informal tu is acceptable, and how to ask someone to call for help if you cannot speak much Italian.
By the end, you can…
- ask for a doctor immediately in Italian using a clear, polite sentence.
- call the emergency number 112 and state the problem briefly.
- describe common urgent symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or severe bleeding.
- ask a bystander to call an ambulance and give my location.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Ho bisogno di un medico subito.
I need a doctor immediately.
oh bee-ZOH-nyoh dee oon MEH-dee-koh SOO-bee-toh
Standard, neutral sentence. Use it with anyone; it is direct but not rude. In an emergency, 'subito' is the key word for 'immediately'.
Chiamate un'ambulanza, per favore!
Call an ambulance, please!
kyah-MAH-teh oon ahm-boo-LAHN-tsah pehr fah-VOH-reh
Use 'chiamate' when speaking to more than one person, or formally to one person (the polite 'voi' form is also used in some regions). To one friend, say 'Chiama un'ambulanza!'.
È un'emergenza.
It's an emergency.
eh oon eh-mehr-JEHN-tsah
Use this at the start of a call to 112 so the operator understands the urgency immediately.
Ho un forte dolore al petto.
I have severe chest pain.
oh oon FOHR-teh doh-LOH-reh ahl PEHT-toh
'Forte' means strong or severe here. Replace 'al petto' with 'alla testa' (head), 'allo stomaco' (stomach), or 'al braccio' (arm) as needed.
Non riesco a respirare bene.
I can't breathe well.
nohn ree-EH-skoh ah reh-spee-RAH-reh BEH-neh
Useful for asthma, allergic reactions, or panic. 'Non riesco a...' means 'I can't manage to...' and is followed by an infinitive.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
The pattern 'Ho bisogno di + [noun]' means 'I need + [noun]'. It is the most natural way to ask for urgent help: 'Ho bisogno di un medico' (I need a doctor), 'Ho bisogno di un'ambulanza' (I need an ambulance), 'Ho bisogno di aiuto' (I need help). To add urgency, place 'subito' or 'immediatamente' at the end: 'Ho bisogno di aiuto subito.' For 'I need to + [verb]', use 'Ho bisogno di + infinitive': 'Ho bisogno di andare in ospedale' (I need to go to hospital).
When to use it
Use these phrases when the situation is genuinely urgent: severe pain, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness, or a serious accident. In Italy, call 112 for any emergency; the operator will route you to medical, police, or fire services. If you are not the patient, say 'Una persona ha bisogno di un medico' (A person needs a doctor) and give the address. If you cannot speak Italian well, say 'Parla inglese?' (Do you speak English?) or 'Non parlo bene italiano' (I don't speak Italian well) and stay on the line.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Pronto, è un'emergenza. Ho bisogno di un'ambulanza subito.

In Italy the single emergency number is 112, free from any phone, and it works across the EU. You may also hear 118 mentioned for medical emergencies; 118 still connects to ambulance services in many regions, but 112 is the official European number and will route you correctly. Operators usually speak Italian; in tourist areas they may speak some English, but keep your Italian simple and repeat the address slowly.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Voglio un medico subito' to mean 'I need a doctor immediately'.
Try this instead: 'Voglio' means 'I want', which can sound demanding in an emergency. Use 'Ho bisogno di un medico subito' or 'Mi serve un medico subito' instead. Example: 'Ho bisogno di un medico subito, per favore.'
