If you need cash or banking services in Italy, the key question is "C'è una banca qui vicino?" (Is there a bank near here?). In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask for a bank, specify that you need an ATM (bancomat), and understand common replies. We'll focus on the useful pattern "C'è...?" (Is there...?) and vocabulary for banking locations. You'll also learn how to ask for directions to an ATM and how to say you need to withdraw money. By the end, you'll be able to handle this practical situation with confidence.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask if there is a bank or ATM near my current location.
    • understand and respond to simple directions to a bank or ATM.

    C'è una banca qui vicino?

Is there a bank near here?

    cheh OO-nah BAHN-kah kwee vee-CHEE-noh

Use this to ask if a bank is nearby. 'C'è' means 'there is'. 'Qui vicino' means 'near here'.

    Dov'è il bancomat più vicino?

    Where is the nearest ATM?

    doh-VEH eel bahn-KOH-maht pyoo vee-CHEE-noh

Ask this when you specifically need an ATM. 'Bancomat' is the common word for ATM in Italy.

    Ho bisogno di prelevare contanti.

    I need to withdraw cash.

    oh bee-ZOH-nyoh dee preh-leh-VAH-reh kohn-TAHN-tee

Use this to explain you need cash. 'Prelevare' means 'to withdraw', 'contanti' means 'cash'.

    La banca è aperta?

    Is the bank open?

    lah BAHN-kah eh ah-PEHR-tah

Ask about opening hours. Banks in Italy often close in the afternoon.

    Grazie, molto gentile.

    Thank you, very kind.

    GRAH-tsee-eh MOHL-toh jen-TEE-leh

A polite way to thank someone after getting help.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 'C'è...?' means 'Is there...?' and is used for singular nouns. For example: 'C'è una banca?' (Is there a bank?), 'C'è un bancomat?' (Is there an ATM?). To ask about plural nouns, use 'Ci sono...?' as in 'Ci sono banche qui?' (Are there banks here?). Note that 'banca' is feminine, so you say 'una banca', while 'bancomat' is masculine, so 'un bancomat'. The word 'qui vicino' means 'near here' and can be added to any of these questions.

    When to use it

Use 'C'è una banca qui vicino?' when you are in a new area and need to find a bank. If you specifically need an ATM, ask 'Dov'è il bancomat?' (Where is the ATM?). In Italy, many ATMs are located outside bank branches, so you might see 'Bancomat' signs. If you need to withdraw cash, say 'Ho bisogno di prelevare contanti.' Remember that banks are usually open in the morning and early afternoon on weekdays, and closed on weekends. If you need an ATM after hours, look for one outside a bank or in a train station.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Italy, 'bancomat' is the general term for an ATM, but you may also see 'ATM' or 'Postamat' (at post offices). Banks often have a 'bancomat' outside, but some are inside and accessible only during opening hours. When asking for directions, use 'Scusi' (excuse me) to get attention politely. Italians are generally helpful, but keep questions simple. In formal situations, use 'Lei' (the polite form) as in 'Scusi, sa dov'è...?' (Excuse me, do you know where...?).

    One thing to watch for

Using 'banco' for 'bank'. 'Banco' means 'desk' or 'bench' and is not the correct word for a financial institution.

Try this instead: The correct word is 'banca'. For example, say 'C'è una banca?' not 'C'è un banco?'. Remember that 'banca' is feminine, so use 'una' with it.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Is there an ATM near here?' in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    C'è un bancomat qui vicino?

This uses the pattern 'C'è...?' for singular 'bancomat' (masculine) and adds 'qui vicino' for 'near here'. You could also ask 'C'è un bancomat nelle vicinanze?' (in the vicinity).

2What does 'Dov'è la banca più vicina?' mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Where is the nearest bank?

'Dov'è' means 'where is', 'la banca' is 'the bank', and 'più vicina' means 'nearest' (feminine). This is a direct way to ask for the closest bank.

3How would you say 'I need to withdraw cash' in Italian?

    Show a sample answer

    Ho bisogno di prelevare contanti.

This phrase uses 'ho bisogno di' (I need to) + infinitive 'prelevare' (withdraw) + 'contanti' (cash). You can also say 'Devo prelevare contanti' (I have to withdraw cash).

    Take this with you

To ask for a bank or ATM in Italian, use 'C'è una banca/bancomat qui vicino?' or 'Dov'è il bancomat più vicino?'. Remember that 'banca' is feminine and 'bancomat' is masculine. Banks are often closed in the afternoon and on weekends, so plan ahead.
