German Contrast Clauses: Expressing 'Although' and 'However' at Elementary Level
Learn to express contrast in German using obwohl, trotzdem, aber, and jedoch, with clear word-order rules and practical examples for everyday situations.

In German, contrast is expressed differently from cause and result. Words like weil (because) and deshalb (therefore) show why something happens or what follows. Contrast words like obwohl (although) and trotzdem (nevertheless) show a surprising opposition: one fact does not prevent another. This lesson teaches you to build correct German contrast sentences, including the important verb-position rules that differ between subordinating and coordinating connectors. You will practise with everyday examples and avoid common word-order mistakes.
By the end, you can…
- use obwohl to introduce a contrast clause with correct verb-final word order.
- use trotzdem, aber, and jedoch to connect two contrasting main clauses.
- distinguish contrast connectors from cause and result connectors like weil and deshalb.
- produce short spoken and written German sentences about surprising or unexpected situations.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Obwohl es spät war, haben wir weitergearbeitet.
Although it was late, we kept working.
op-VOHL es shpayt var, HAH-ben veer VY-ter-guh-ar-bai-tet
Standard German. The obwohl clause can come first; then the main clause starts with its verb.
Ich bin müde, aber ich gehe noch einkaufen.
I am tired, but I am still going shopping.
ikh bin MUE-der, AH-ber ikh GAY-e nokh AIN-kow-fen
Aber is a coordinating conjunction. It does not change the word order of the clause that follows.
Es hat geregnet. Trotzdem sind wir spazieren gegangen.
It rained. Nevertheless, we went for a walk.
es hat guh-RAYG-net. TROTS-daym zint veer shpa-TSEE-ren guh-GANG-en
Trotzdem is an adverb. When it starts a sentence, the verb comes immediately after it.
Sie ist sehr beschäftigt, jedoch hat sie Zeit für uns.
She is very busy; however, she has time for us.
zee ist zair buh-SHEF-tikht, doh-KHOKH hat zee tsyt fuer uns
Jedoch is more formal or written than aber. It also triggers verb-second order when it begins a clause.
Wir haben wenig Zeit, deshalb beeilen wir uns.
We have little time, so we are doing it quickly.
veer HAH-ben VAY-nikh tsyt, DES-halp MAH-khen veer shnel
Deshalb expresses result, not contrast. Compare it with trotzdem to see the difference.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
German contrast uses two main patterns. First, obwohl (although) is a subordinating conjunction: it sends the conjugated verb to the end of its clause. Example: Obwohl es spät war, haben wir weitergearbeitet. Second, trotzdem, aber, and jedoch connect main clauses. Aber is a coordinating conjunction and keeps normal word order: Ich bin müde, aber ich gehe noch einkaufen. Trotzdem and jedoch are adverbs; if they start a sentence, the verb comes next: Trotzdem sind wir spazieren gegangen. Remember that weil (because) and deshalb (therefore) show cause and result, while obwohl and trotzdem show contrast.
When to use it
Use obwohl when you want to say that something happens despite an opposing fact: Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir raus. Use trotzdem when you present the opposing fact first and then the surprising result: Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir raus. Use aber in neutral, everyday speech: Ich habe Hunger, aber ich esse nichts. Use jedoch in more formal writing, reports, or polite statements: Das Angebot ist teuer, jedoch lohnt es sich. Do not use weil or deshalb for contrast; they answer 'why?' or 'what is the result?', not 'what is surprising?'.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Obwohl ich müde bin, lerne ich noch Deutsch.
Although I am tired, I am still studying German.op-VOHL ikh MUE-der bin, LAIR-ne ikh nokh DOYTSHDas ist gut. Ich bin auch müde, aber ich mache weiter.
That is good. I am tired too, but I am continuing.das ist goot. ikh bin oukh MUE-der, AH-ber ikh MAH-khe VAI-terEs ist schon spät. Trotzdem haben wir Zeit für eine Pause.
It is already late. Nevertheless, we have time for a break.es ist shohn shpayt. TROTS-daym HAH-ben veer tsyt fuer AY-ne POW-zeJa, jedoch nur zehn Minuten. Danach arbeiten wir weiter.
Yes, however only ten minutes. After that we will continue working.yah, doh-KHOKH noor tsayn mi-NOO-ten. da-NAKH AR-bai-ten veer VAI-terA little context goes a long way
In everyday German conversation, aber is the most common contrast word and is perfectly neutral. Trotzdem is also common in speech and often carries a tone of mild surprise or determination. Jedoch sounds more formal and appears more often in written German, news, or business contexts. In Austria and Switzerland, aber and trotzdem are used much like in Germany, but regional speech may prefer slightly different intonation or shorten some forms. Standard written German keeps the word-order rules consistently across these countries.
One thing to watch for
Using weil or deshalb when you mean 'although' or 'however', or putting the verb in the wrong position after obwohl.
Try this instead: Use obwohl for 'although' and trotzdem for 'however'. With obwohl, the conjugated verb goes to the end: Obwohl es spät war, haben wir weitergearbeitet. Do not say Obwohl es war spät. With trotzdem at the start, the verb comes second: Trotzdem sind wir gegangen, not Trotzdem wir sind gegangen.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Combine the ideas with obwohl: Es war kalt. Wir sind schwimmen gegangen.
Show a sample answer
Obwohl es kalt war, sind wir schwimmen gegangen.
The obwohl clause sends war to the end. The main clause then begins with its verb sind. A valid alternative is Wir sind schwimmen gegangen, obwohl es kalt war.
2Rewrite using trotzdem at the beginning: Ich habe wenig Zeit. Ich helfe dir.
Show a sample answer
Ich habe wenig Zeit. Trotzdem helfe ich dir.
Trotzdem starts the second sentence and is followed immediately by the verb helfe. You could also say Trotzdem helfe ich dir, obwohl ich wenig Zeit habe, but the simple version is correct.
3Choose the correct connector: Ich bin satt, ___ ich esse noch ein Stück Kuchen. (contrast)
Show a sample answer
aber
Aber expresses contrast and keeps normal word order: ich esse. Jedoch is also possible in a more formal register, but it would require verb-second order if it starts the clause: jedoch esse ich noch ein Stück Kuchen.
Use obwohl for 'although' with the verb at the end, and trotzdem, aber, or jedoch for 'however' with careful verb position. Contrast is not cause or result, so keep weil and deshalb for different jobs.
