German for Describing Friendships: Expressing Loyalty and Shared History
Learn to say a friend is always there for you and that you have been friends for years, using German present-tense and present-perfect patterns for chosen bonds.

Describing friends in German is not the same as describing family. Family words often come with fixed possessive phrases, but friendships are chosen, so you need patterns for loyalty, duration and emotional value. In this lesson you will learn five useful phrases and two core patterns: present tense with 'sein' for qualities, and present perfect with 'seit' for how long a friendship has lasted. You will also practise a short conversation and avoid a common English-influenced mistake.
By the end, you can…
- say that a friend is always there for me in German.
- say how many years I have been friends with someone, using 'seit' and the present perfect.
- express that a friendship means a lot to me.
- distinguish friendship descriptions from family descriptions in German.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Sie ist immer für mich da.
She is always there for me.
zee ist IM-mer fewr mish dah
Use 'für mich da' for emotional availability. The word 'da' comes at the end of the clause. For a male friend, say 'Er ist immer für mich da.'
Wir sind seit Jahren befreundet.
We have been friends for years.
veer zint zite YAH-ren buh-FROYN-det
'Seit' takes the dative: 'seit Jahren' means 'for years'. German uses the present tense here, not a perfect tense, when the friendship continues.
Er ist ein echter Freund.
He is a true friend.
air ist ine ESH-ter froynt
'Ein echter Freund' describes a genuine, loyal friend. For a female friend: 'Sie ist eine echte Freundin.'
Unsere Freundschaft bedeutet mir viel.
Our friendship means a lot to me.
OON-zuh-ruh FROYNT-shaft buh-DOY-tet meer feel
'Bedeutet mir viel' is a natural way to express personal value. You can intensify with 'sehr viel'.
Wir haben uns im Studium kennengelernt.
We met during our studies.
veer HAH-ben oons im SHTOO-dee-um KEN-nen-guh-lairnt
'Sich kennenlernen' means 'to get to know each other'. Use it to explain how a chosen bond began. Replace 'im Studium' with 'in der Schule' or 'bei der Arbeit'.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
For ongoing friendships, German uses the present tense with 'seit': 'Wir sind seit zehn Jahren befreundet.' English says 'We have been friends for ten years', but German does not use the perfect here. The same pattern works with verbs: 'Ich kenne sie seit der Schule' means 'I have known her since school'. Use 'seit' plus a time expression in the dative: 'seit einem Jahr', 'seit drei Monaten', 'seit 2019'.
When to use it
Use 'für mich da' for emotional support in everyday situations: 'Meine beste Freundin ist immer für mich da, wenn ich Probleme habe.' Use 'bedeutet mir viel' to express value without sounding overly formal: 'Diese Freundschaft bedeutet mir sehr viel.' Avoid using family vocabulary such as 'Verwandte' for friends; a close friend can be called 'wie ein Bruder' or 'wie eine Schwester', but that is a comparison, not a family category.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In German-speaking countries, 'Freund' and 'Freundin' can mean a close friend or a romantic partner depending on context. To be clear about a platonic friend, many speakers say 'ein guter Freund' or 'eine gute Freundin', or specify 'ein Freund von mir'. In Austria and parts of southern Germany, 'Freundin' is usually understood from context, but adding 'von mir' avoids confusion.
One thing to watch for
Wir haben Freunde gewesen seit zehn Jahren.
Try this instead: Say 'Wir sind seit zehn Jahren befreundet' or 'Wir kennen uns seit zehn Jahren'. German uses the present tense with 'seit' for ongoing states. The perfect 'haben ... gewesen' sounds like the friendship is over, and 'gewesen' is not used this way with 'seit'.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'She is always there for me' in German?
Show a sample answer
Sie ist immer für mich da.
'Für mich da' is the fixed expression for emotional support. 'Immer' goes before 'für mich'. A valid alternative with a male friend is 'Er ist immer für mich da.'
2Translate: 'We have been friends for five years.'
Show a sample answer
Wir sind seit fünf Jahren befreundet.
German uses the present tense with 'seit' plus dative 'fünf Jahren'. You could also say 'Wir kennen uns seit fünf Jahren', which shifts the focus to knowing each other.
3How can you express that a friendship is valuable to you?
Show a sample answer
Unsere Freundschaft bedeutet mir viel.
'Bedeutet mir viel' expresses personal value. You can strengthen it with 'sehr viel' or 'unglaublich viel'. Another natural option is 'Sie ist mir sehr wichtig', meaning 'She is very important to me.'
Use the present tense with 'seit' for lasting friendships, and 'für mich da' for loyalty. Friendships are chosen bonds, so describe them with value phrases like 'bedeutet mir viel' rather than family terms.
