German: Using 'könnten' to Make Polite Requests
Learn to use könnten (could) for polite requests in German, and see how it differs from direct forms like können and imperatives.

In German, one of the easiest ways to sound polite is to use könnten, the subjunctive form of können (to be able to). It works much like English 'could' in 'Could you help me?' This lesson focuses only on könnten for requests. You will learn the pattern, when to use it, and how it compares with direct forms such as Können Sie ...? and imperatives.
By the end, you can…
- form polite requests with könnten in German.
- recognise when a direct request sounds too blunt and choose könnten instead.
- use könnten with different verbs and pronouns in everyday situations.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The polite request pattern is: Könnten + subject + (mir/dir/uns) + bitte + infinitive + rest. Examples: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?), Könntest du mir bitte das Salz geben? (Could you please pass me the salt?). Könnten is the same for ich and er/sie/es; for du it is könntest, for ihr könntet, for wir/sie/Sie it is könnten. The main verb stays in the infinitive at the end.
When to use it
Use könnten when you want to be polite, especially with strangers, in shops, offices, or when asking a favour. Direct forms like Können Sie mir helfen? (Can you help me?) are grammatically fine but can sound more direct or businesslike. Imperatives such as Helfen Sie mir! (Help me!) are even more direct and can sound rude unless you are in charge or in an emergency. Compare: Gib mir das Salz! (Give me the salt!) is very direct; Könntest du mir bitte das Salz geben? is much softer. Adding bitte (please) makes any request more polite.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In German-speaking countries, politeness is often shown by using könnten plus bitte rather than by long apologies. Using du with a stranger can be too familiar; use Sie in formal situations. In Austria and parts of Switzerland, Sie is also standard in formal contexts, though regional speech may sound more relaxed. When in doubt, use könnten with Sie.
One thing to watch for
Using the infinitive after könnten without the subject, as in Könnten mir bitte helfen?
Try this instead: Include the subject: Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? or Könntest du mir bitte helfen? The subject is required in German.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Make this request polite with könnten: 'Helfen Sie mir!'

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
Könnten Sie ... bitte ... is the standard polite request. Adding bitte softens it further. Könnten Sie mir helfen? is also correct, though bitte is common.
2Which form of könnten fits with du?

könntest
The du-form is könntest, as in Könntest du mir helfen? The other forms are könnte (ich/er/sie/es), könnten (wir/sie/Sie), könntet (ihr).
3Turn this into a polite question: 'Sie wiederholen das.'
Show a sample answer
Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Könnten Sie ... wiederholen? places the infinitive at the end. Bitte is optional but makes it more polite. Könnten Sie das wiederholen? is also acceptable.
Use könnten plus bitte to make requests polite in German. It is softer than können and much softer than an imperative. Remember the subject and put the main verb at the end.
