German Storytelling: Sharing Past Experiences Abroad with 'Als ich in ... war'
Learn to tell short stories about time spent in other cultures using German past tenses, time clauses with als, and sequencing words.

When you want to talk about a stay in another country, German speakers expect a clear time frame, a past-tense verb, and some detail about what happened. This lesson teaches you to build that kind of story with the frame Als ich in ... war (When I was in ...), the simple past war/hatte, and the perfect tense for actions. You will also learn sequencing words such as zuerst, dann and danach so your story moves forward naturally.
By the end, you can…
- open a story about a past stay abroad with Als ich in ... war.
- use war, hatte and the perfect tense to describe experiences.
- sequence events with zuerst, dann, danach and schließlich.
- add a reaction or evaluation to end a short anecdote.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
The core frame is Als ich in [place] war, ... . The conjunction als introduces a single past event or period, and the verb goes to the end of that clause: Als ich in Wien war, ... . In the main clause, use the perfect tense for completed actions: habe ich viel gesehen, bin ich viel gereist. Use war and hatte for states and possessions: Ich war müde. Ich hatte wenig Zeit. For a longer stay, you can also say Als ich ein Jahr in Japan war, ... .
When to use it
Use this pattern for a specific completed stay in the past, not for repeated past habits; for repeated past events German often uses wenn or the simple past. Compare Als ich in Rom war, habe ich jeden Tag Pasta gegessen (one specific stay) with Wenn ich früher in Rom war, habe ich immer Pasta gegessen (repeated stays). In everyday speech, the perfect tense is normal for actions, while war and hatte are common even in speech. In written reports, the simple past may replace the perfect: Ich wohnte bei einer Gastfamilie.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In German-speaking countries, a short personal story is usually welcome in informal conversation, but details about money, salary or family problems can feel too private at first. A friendly evaluation such as Es war eine tolle Erfahrung is a common way to close the story. In Austria and Switzerland, some speakers prefer slightly different vocabulary, for example Jause or Znüni for a snack, but the past-tense frame taught here is understood everywhere.
One thing to watch for
Using wenn for a single past stay: Wenn ich in Berlin war, habe ich bei einer Gastfamilie gewohnt.
Try this instead: Use als for a single past event or period: Als ich in Berlin war, habe ich bei einer Gastfamilie gewohnt. Use wenn for repeated past events: Wenn ich früher in Berlin war, habe ich immer bei einer Gastfamilie gewohnt.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Complete the opening: ___ ich in Madrid ___, habe ich viel gelernt.
Show a sample answer
Als ich in Madrid war, habe ich viel gelernt.
Als introduces the single past stay, and war is the simple past of sein at the end of the clause. Wenn would suggest a repeated stay.
2Make a perfect-tense sentence from kennenlernen: Ich ___ dort viele Leute ___.
Show a sample answer
Ich habe dort viele Leute kennengelernt.
kennenlernen is separable, so the perfect tense is habe ... kennengelernt. In southern German and Austrian speech you may hear Ich habe dort viele Leute kennen gelernt, which is also accepted.
3Choose the best sequencing word: ___ sind wir in die Berge gefahren. (first / after that / finally)
Show a sample answer
Danach sind wir in die Berge gefahren.
Danach means after that and moves the story forward. Zuerst would mean at first, and schließlich would mean finally.
Open with Als ich in ... war, keep states in war or hatte, put actions in the perfect tense, and move the story with zuerst, dann, danach and schließlich.
