German for Evaluating Relationships: Saying You've Grown Closer or Drifted Apart

Learn German phrases and patterns for judging how a relationship has changed over time, using sich näherkommen, auseinanderleben and related reflective expressions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Talking about a relationship means describing what you do together. Evaluating a relationship means judging its direction: has it deepened, cooled, or ended? German has precise, idiomatic ways to express this. In this lesson you will learn verbs and phrases such as sich näherkommen, sich auseinanderleben and auf Distanz gehen, plus the grammar that makes them sound natural. You will practise contrasting a past state with a present one, and you will learn how separable verbs and reflexive pronouns behave in these expressions.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe whether a relationship has grown closer or drifted apart using idiomatic German verbs.
    • contrast a past state of a relationship with the present using früher and heute.
    • use reflexive and separable verbs such as sich näherkommen and auseinanderleben correctly in sentences.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Wir sind uns in letzter Zeit nähergekommen.

    We've grown closer recently.

veer zint uns in LETS-ter tsyte NAY-er-geh-kom-men

sich näherkommen is reflexive with a dative pronoun: uns, not wir. The past participle is nähergekommen.

    Wir haben uns auseinandergelebt.

    We've drifted apart.

    veer HAH-ben uns ow-sy-NAN-der-geh-laypt

auseinanderleben literally means 'to live apart from each other.' It describes a gradual process, not a single event.

Früher waren wir uns sehr nah, heute sind wir auf Distanz.

We used to be very close; today we keep our distance.

FROO-er VAH-ren veer uns zair nah, HOY-te zint veer owf dis-TANTS

auf Distanz sein/gehen is a neutral way to say a relationship has cooled without saying it is over.

    Die Beziehung ist eingeschlafen.

    The relationship has fizzled out.

    dee beh-TSEE-oong ist INE-geh-shlah-fen

einschlafen here is figurative: the relationship 'fell asleep.' Common for friendships and romances that quietly faded.

    Wir haben uns wieder angenähert.

    We've grown close again.

    veer HAH-ben uns VEE-der AN-geh-nay-ert

sich annähern means to move closer again after a distance. It suggests deliberate effort.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Many of these expressions are reflexive and separable. The reflexive pronoun is dative with sich näherkommen: Ich bin ihm nähergekommen. With auseinanderleben the pronoun is accusative: Wir haben uns auseinandergelebt. In the present tense the separable prefix moves to the end: Wir leben auseinander. In the perfect tense it attaches to the participle: Wir sind uns nähergekommen, but Wir haben uns auseinandergelebt. Note the auxiliary: näherkommen uses sein because it expresses movement toward each other, while auseinanderleben uses haben.

    When to use it

Use sich näherkommen when two people become emotionally closer, often gradually: Nach dem gemeinsamen Urlaub sind wir uns nähergekommen. Use sich auseinanderleben for a slow, mutual drifting apart: Wir haben uns einfach auseinandergelebt. Use auf Distanz gehen when one or both people deliberately create space: Seit dem Streit geht er auf Distanz. Use einschlafen for something that faded without a clear break: Unsere Freundschaft ist eingeschlafen. These are evaluative, so they fit reflective conversation, not neutral reporting.

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

German speakers often discuss relationship dynamics quite directly, but the tone matters. Auseinandergelebt is neutral and non-accusatory, which makes it useful in reflective conversation. In formal contexts, prefer distanziert or die Beziehung hat sich verändert. Regional usage is broadly standard; Austrian and Swiss speakers understand these expressions, though Swiss German may use slightly different everyday wording.

    One thing to watch for

    Wir haben uns nähergekommen.

Try this instead: The verb sich näherkommen takes sein in the perfect tense because it expresses movement toward each other: Wir sind uns nähergekommen. Use haben with auseinanderleben: Wir haben uns auseinandergelebt.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'We've drifted apart' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Wir haben uns auseinandergelebt.

This uses the reflexive accusative uns and the auxiliary haben. Wir sind uns auseinandergelebt would be wrong because auseinanderleben does not express movement.

2Complete with the correct auxiliary: Wir ___ uns in letzter Zeit nähergekommen.

    Show a sample answer

    sind

näherkommen uses sein in the perfect tense. The full sentence is Wir sind uns in letzter Zeit nähergekommen.

3Which expression fits a friendship that quietly faded without a clear break?

    Show a sample answer

    Die Freundschaft ist eingeschlafen.

einschlafen describes something fading gradually. Auf Distanz gehen would suggest deliberate distancing, which is a different nuance.

    Take this with you

Use sich näherkommen with sein and a dative reflexive, and auseinanderleben with haben and an accusative reflexive. These verbs let you evaluate a relationship's direction, not just describe it.
