German for Persuasion: Leading with 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...'

Learn to persuade in German by leading with opinions and reasons, using 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...' and related structures to build consensus.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Persuasion in German often starts with a clear opinion and a supporting reason. The pattern 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...' lets you propose a course of action and justify it. This lesson teaches you to use this structure and related phrases to lead a group toward agreement. You'll practice with realistic examples and learn to avoid common pitfalls.

    By the end, you can…

    • express a persuasive opinion using 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...'.
    • give reasons with 'weil' and 'denn' to support my suggestions.
    • use softening phrases like 'vielleicht' and 'eventuell' to make suggestions more polite.
    • respond to counterarguments and build consensus in a group discussion.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...

    I think we should ... because ...

    ikh FIN-duh, veer ZOL-ten ... vahyl ...

Use this to state your opinion and give a reason. The verb 'sollten' is in the subjunctive II, making the suggestion polite. 'Weil' introduces a subordinate clause, so the verb goes to the end.

    Meiner Meinung nach ...

    In my opinion ...

    MY-ner MY-noong nakh ...

A formal way to introduce your opinion. After this phrase, the verb comes second: 'Meiner Meinung nach sollten wir ...'

Das leuchtet mir ein, aber ...

That makes sense to me, but ...

    dahs LOYKH-tet meer ayn, AH-ber ...

Acknowledge the other person's point before offering a counterargument. This shows you are listening and helps build consensus.

Was hältst du davon, wenn wir ...?

What do you think about us ...?

    vahs HELT-st doo dah-FON, ven veer ...?

A polite way to propose an idea and ask for the other person's opinion. Literally: 'What do you think of it if we ...?'

    Lass uns ...

    Let's ...

    lahs oons ...

An informal way to suggest doing something together. Use with people you know well. For formal situations, use 'Lassen Sie uns ...'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern for persuasion is: 'Ich finde, wir sollten [action] weil [reason].' For example: 'Ich finde, wir sollten früher anfangen, weil wir dann mehr Zeit haben.' (I think we should start earlier because then we'll have more time.) You can also use 'denn' instead of 'weil', but note the word order: with 'denn', the verb stays in normal position: 'Ich finde, wir sollten früher anfangen, denn wir haben dann mehr Zeit.' To soften your suggestion, add 'vielleicht' or 'eventuell': 'Ich finde, wir sollten vielleicht früher anfangen, weil ...'

    When to use it

Use this pattern in meetings, group projects, or casual planning when you want to lead the group toward a decision. It's direct but polite because 'sollten' is a subjunctive form. For example, in a team meeting: 'Ich finde, wir sollten die Präsentation auf nächste Woche verschieben, weil wir noch nicht alle Daten haben.' (I think we should postpone the presentation to next week because we don't have all the data yet.) Avoid using 'müssen' (must) unless you have authority; it can sound harsh. Instead, 'sollten' suggests a recommendation.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, directness is often valued in professional settings, but politeness is still important. Using 'sollten' (should) and 'vielleicht' (maybe) softens suggestions. In formal contexts, use 'Sie' and 'Lassen Sie uns ...' instead of 'Lass uns ...'. In Austria and Switzerland, some phrases may vary slightly, but the standard German taught here is widely understood.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'weil' with normal word order: 'Ich finde, wir sollten früher anfangen, weil wir haben dann mehr Zeit.'

Try this instead: With 'weil', the verb goes to the end of the clause: 'Ich finde, wir sollten früher anfangen, weil wir dann mehr Zeit haben.' Alternatively, use 'denn' with normal word order: '... denn wir haben dann mehr Zeit.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I think we should start now because we don't have much time' in German?

    Show a sample answer

Ich finde, wir sollten jetzt anfangen, weil wir nicht viel Zeit haben.

This uses the pattern 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...' with correct word order: the verb 'haben' goes to the end after 'weil'. You could also say '... denn wir haben nicht viel Zeit.'

2What is a polite way to suggest doing something together informally?

    Show a sample answer

    Lass uns ...

'Lass uns' is informal and means 'Let's ...'. For formal situations, use 'Lassen Sie uns ...'. Both are correct depending on the context.

3How can you acknowledge someone's point before disagreeing?

    Show a sample answer

Das leuchtet mir ein, aber ...

This phrase means 'That makes sense to me, but ...' and shows you are listening. Other phrases like 'Da hast du recht, aber ...' also work.

    Take this with you

To persuade in German, lead with 'Ich finde, wir sollten ... weil ...' to state your opinion and reason. Soften with 'vielleicht' and acknowledge others with 'Das leuchtet mir ein, aber ...' to build consensus.
