German for Q&A: Answering Audience Questions with Confidence
Learn to handle audience questions after a German talk: buy time, clarify, give opinions, and close politely with natural phrases.

You have finished your presentation, and now the audience asks questions. This lesson teaches you to respond confidently in German. You will learn phrases to acknowledge a question, ask for clarification, give your opinion, and manage difficult situations. The focus is on spoken interaction, not on preparing slides. By the end, you will be able to answer questions smoothly and politely, using standard German with notes on regional differences.
By the end, you can…
- acknowledge a question and give myself time to think in German.
- ask for clarification or repetition when I don't understand.
- express my opinion and give a short, clear answer.
- politely handle a question I cannot answer and close the Q&A.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
To answer a question politely, start with a short acknowledgement, then give your answer. Common openers: 'Das ist eine gute Frage.' or 'Vielen Dank für die Frage.' After that, state your opinion with 'Ich denke, dass ...' or 'Ich bin der Meinung, dass ...'. For example: 'Das ist eine gute Frage. Ich denke, dass wir mehr Daten brauchen.' If you need time, say 'Moment, lassen Sie mich kurz nachdenken.' This pattern works in formal and informal contexts.
When to use it
Use these phrases during the Q&A session after a talk. If you don't understand, ask 'Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?' or 'Was meinen Sie genau mit ...?' If you don't know the answer, say 'Das kann ich nicht mit Sicherheit sagen, aber ich vermute, dass ...' If the question is off-topic, you can say 'Das ist ein interessanter Punkt, aber er liegt außerhalb meines Themas.' Always thank the audience at the end: 'Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit.'
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In German-speaking countries, Q&A sessions tend to be direct and focused on facts. It is normal to ask for clarification or to say 'Das kann ich nicht mit Sicherheit sagen.' Politeness is shown through formal address ('Sie') and thanking the questioner. In informal settings, such as among students, 'du' is common. Regional differences exist: in Austria and Switzerland, 'Grüß Gott' or 'Grüezi' may be used as greetings, but during Q&A, standard German phrases are widely understood.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Ich denke, dass...' with a main clause word order, e.g., 'Ich denke, dass wir brauchen mehr Zeit.'
Try this instead: After 'dass', the verb goes to the end: 'Ich denke, dass wir mehr Zeit brauchen.' This is a common error because English uses subject-verb order after 'that'. Remember: 'dass' sends the verb to the end.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you politely ask someone to repeat a question in formal German?
Show a sample answer
Könnten Sie die Frage bitte wiederholen?
This uses the polite 'Könnten Sie' form. In informal contexts, 'Kannst du die Frage bitte wiederholen?' is also correct.
2Translate: 'I am of the opinion that we need more data.'
Show a sample answer
Ich bin der Meinung, dass wir mehr Daten brauchen.
This uses the fixed phrase 'Ich bin der Meinung, dass' and places the verb 'brauchen' at the end of the clause. 'Ich denke, dass wir mehr Daten brauchen' is also acceptable.
3What do you say if you don't know the answer to a question?
Show a sample answer
Das kann ich nicht mit Sicherheit sagen.
This is a polite way to admit uncertainty. You can add 'aber ich vermute, dass...' to offer a guess. Another option: 'Das weiß ich nicht genau.'
Acknowledge the question, take a moment, and answer clearly. Use polite phrases like 'Das ist eine gute Frage' and 'Vielen Dank für Ihre Frage.' Don't be afraid to ask for repetition or admit uncertainty.
