How to Offer Kind Constructive Criticism in German: "Maybe you could add more details"

Learn to soften feedback in German with könnte and vielleicht, so you can suggest improvements to someone's work politely and clearly.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In German, telling someone their work needs more detail can sound blunt if you use a direct command like Füge mehr Details hinzu! (Add more details!). To keep feedback kind, German speakers often use the modal verb könnte (could) plus vielleicht (maybe). This lesson teaches you a short, natural sentence for suggesting an improvement to a piece of work, such as a text, a drawing, a presentation or a plan. You will learn the main phrase, a few variations, and how to respond when someone gives you this kind of feedback.

    By the end, you can…

    • suggest adding more details to someone's work in polite German.
    • use könnte and vielleicht to soften a suggestion.
    • respond appropriately when someone offers me constructive criticism.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Vielleicht könntest du noch mehr Details hinzufügen.

Maybe you could add more details.

    feel-LYKHT KÖNN-test doo nokh mair day-TAILS hin-tsoo-fyoo-gn

Standard, friendly suggestion about a piece of work. The word noch here means 'more' or 'additional' and makes the suggestion sound gentle.

Vielleicht könntest du das noch genauer beschreiben.

Maybe you could describe that in more detail.

    feel-LYKHT KÖNN-test doo das nokh guh-NOW-er buh-SHRY-bn

Useful for written work or a presentation. Genauer means 'more precisely' or 'in more detail'.

Ich würde mir noch ein paar Beispiele wünschen.

I would like a few more examples.

ikh VUER-duh meer nokh ine pahr by-SHPEE-luh VUEN-shn

A softer, more personal way to give feedback. Literally: 'I would wish for myself a few more examples.'

Das ist schon gut so, aber vielleicht fehlen noch ein paar Einzelheiten.

That is already good, but maybe a few details are still missing.

das ist shohn goot zoh, AH-ber feel-LYKHT FAY-ln nokh ine pahr INE-tsl-hy-tn

Starts with genuine praise, then names the gap. Einzelheiten means 'details' or 'particulars'.

Könntest du das noch etwas ausführlicher machen?

Could you make that a bit more detailed?

    KÖNN-test doo das nokh ET-vas OWS-fuer-likh-er MA-khn

A direct but still polite question. Ausführlicher means 'more detailed' or 'more thorough'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is Vielleicht könntest du ... (Maybe you could ...). Könntest is the Konjunktiv II form of können (can) and makes a request sound like a possibility rather than an order. Compare the direct Füge mehr Details hinzu! (Add more details!) with Vielleicht könntest du noch mehr Details hinzufügen. (Maybe you could add more details.) The second sentence leaves the other person room to decide. You can swap the ending for other useful verbs: Vielleicht könntest du das noch erklären. (Maybe you could explain that.) Vielleicht könntest du ein Beispiel geben. (Maybe you could give an example.)

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you are talking about a piece of work, not about the person. It fits school essays, work reports, designs, presentations and hobby projects. Start with something positive if you can: Das ist schon gut so, aber vielleicht könntest du noch mehr Details hinzufügen. (That is already good, but maybe you could add more details.) In a more formal situation, for example with a boss or a teacher, use the Sie-form: Vielleicht könnten Sie noch mehr Details hinzufügen. (Maybe you could add more details.) Among friends and family, the du-form is normal. In Austria and parts of southern Germany, you may also hear the diminutive phrase ein bisserl mehr Details (a little more detail), but the standard written form remains ein bisschen mehr Details.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

German feedback can be more direct than in some English-speaking contexts, but kindness is still shown through word choice. Using könnte plus vielleicht signals that you are offering a possibility, not issuing a command. In formal situations, switch to the Sie-form: Vielleicht könnten Sie noch mehr Details hinzufügen. In casual conversation, du is normal. Avoid ironic praise; German speakers usually take praise literally.

    One thing to watch for

Using a direct command such as Füge mehr Details hinzu! because it mirrors the English 'Add more details!'

Try this instead: Use a softened suggestion instead: Vielleicht könntest du noch mehr Details hinzufügen. The command form can sound like an order, especially to a colleague or classmate. If you want to be more personal, say Ich würde mir noch ein paar Beispiele wünschen. (I would like a few more examples.)

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Maybe you could add more details' to a friend in German?

    Show a sample answer

Vielleicht könntest du noch mehr Details hinzufügen.

This uses the du-form könntest and the softening word vielleicht. A valid alternative is Vielleicht könntest du noch ein paar Details ergänzen.

2Make the sentence polite for a formal situation with a colleague you address as Sie.

    Show a sample answer

Vielleicht könnten Sie noch mehr Details hinzufügen.

The verb changes from könntest to könnten and the pronoun from du to Sie. This is the standard formal register.

3Give a German sentence that starts with praise and then suggests more detail.

    Show a sample answer

Das ist schon gut so, aber vielleicht könntest du das noch genauer beschreiben.

The first clause names a strength, and the second clause offers a gentle suggestion. Other positive openers such as Der Anfang gefällt mir gut work too.

    Take this with you

To give kind feedback in German, say Vielleicht könntest du ... and name the work, not the person. Use könnten Sie in formal situations.
