German for When the Pfandautomat Rejects Your Bottle's Barcode
Learn polite German phrases to ask a supermarket employee for help when the bottle-return machine won't scan your bottle's barcode.

You are standing at the Pfandautomat in a German supermarket, and the machine keeps spitting your bottle back out. The screen says the barcode is not recognized. Instead of leaving the bottle behind, you can politely ask a member of staff for help. This lesson gives you the exact words for the machine and the deposit, plus short, polite sentences you can reuse at any supermarket counter. You will also learn what to say if the employee asks you a follow-up question.
By the end, you can…
- name the bottle-return machine and the deposit in German.
- politely explain that the barcode is not being recognized.
- ask a supermarket employee for help and respond to a simple follow-up.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Der Pfandautomat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Können Sie mir helfen?
The bottle-return machine is not recognizing the barcode. Can you help me?
dair PFANT-ow-toh-maat air-KENT dane BAR-kode nikht. KUR-nen zee meer HEL-fen
Your main polite request at the machine or at the counter. Use Sie with staff you do not know.
Der Automat nimmt meine Flasche nicht an.
The machine is not accepting my bottle.
dair ow-toh-MAAT nimt MY-ne FLASH-e nikht an
Useful when the machine rejects the whole bottle, not only the scan. 'Annehmen' means to accept.
Das Flaschenpfand wird nicht erkannt.
The bottle deposit is not being recognized.
das FLASH-en-pfant veert nikht air-KANT
A neutral way to describe the problem. 'Flaschenpfand' is the deposit on bottles.
Können Sie das bitte prüfen?
Could you please check that?
KUR-nen zee das BIT-e PRUE-fen
Polite request for the employee to look at the bottle or the machine.
Wo kann ich das Pfand sonst zurückbekommen?
Where else can I get the deposit back?
voh kan ikh das PFANT zonst tsoo-RUEK-be-kom-men
Ask this only if the machine keeps failing. It asks for an alternative, not for a promise.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is: Der Pfandautomat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Können Sie mir helfen? You can swap the object: Der Automat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Or use a different verb: Der Automat nimmt die Flasche nicht an. Keep the polite question Können Sie ...? for staff. For a quick follow-up, add bitte: Können Sie das bitte prüfen?
When to use it
Use these sentences at the Pfandautomat or at the nearest checkout or information desk. Start with Entschuldigung to get attention: Entschuldigung, können Sie mir helfen? If the employee asks Welche Flasche?, answer with Die hier, bitte and hold up the bottle. If they say Der Automat ist voll, you can reply Danke, wo kann ich das Pfand sonst zurückbekommen?
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Entschuldigung, der Pfandautomat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Können Sie mir helfen?
Excuse me, the bottle-return machine is not recognizing the barcode. Can you help me?ent-SHOOL-dee-goong, dair PFANT-ow-toh-maat air-KENT dane BAR-kode nikht. KUR-nen zee meer HEL-fenJa, klar. Welche Flasche ist das?
Yes, of course. Which bottle is it?yah, klahr. VEL-khe FLASH-e ist dasDie hier, bitte. Der Automat nimmt sie nicht an.
This one here, please. The machine is not accepting it.dee heer, BIT-e. dair ow-toh-MAAT nimt zee nikht anOkay, ich schaue mal. Vielleicht ist der Barcode beschädigt.
Okay, I'll take a look. Maybe the barcode is damaged.oh-KAY, ikh SHOW-e mahl. fee-LIKHT ist dair BAR-kode be-SHEH-dikhtA little context goes a long way
In German supermarkets, staff usually expect a short, polite request with Sie. Saying Entschuldigung first is normal and friendly. Do not assume the employee can override the machine; they may simply check the bottle or point you to another machine. Regional words vary: in Austria, der Pfandautomat is common, and in Switzerland you may hear Leergutautomat for the same kind of machine.
One thing to watch for
Der Barcode erkennt nicht.
Try this instead: German does not use 'recognize' the way English does here. The machine is the subject that does the recognizing: Der Automat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Or use the passive: Der Barcode wird nicht erkannt. Both are correct; the first is easier for beginners.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you politely say that the machine is not recognizing the barcode and ask for help?
Show a sample answer
Der Pfandautomat erkennt den Barcode nicht. Können Sie mir helfen?
This uses the machine as the subject of erkennen and adds a polite Können Sie ...? question. You can also say Der Automat erkennt den Barcode nicht if you do not need to specify which machine.
2The employee asks Welche Flasche? What can you say while holding up the bottle?
Show a sample answer
Die hier, bitte.
Die hier points to a feminine noun, die Flasche. If you point to a neuter noun, use Das hier, bitte. Both are natural in this situation.
3The machine still will not take the bottle. How do you ask where else you can get the deposit back?
Show a sample answer
Wo kann ich das Pfand sonst zurückbekommen?
This asks for an alternative without demanding a specific policy. You can also ask Gibt es hier eine andere Möglichkeit? if you want a more general question.
At the Pfandautomat, stay polite and specific: name the machine, say the barcode is not recognized, and ask Können Sie mir helfen? Keep the bottle in your hand and use Die hier, bitte when the employee asks which one.
