German for Returning a Mixed Crate of Bottles: Asking Where to Put It
Learn to return a crate holding different bottle types at a German deposit machine: key words like Kasten, gemischt and Pfandwert, plus polite questions for staff.

In Germany you often bring back a whole plastic crate (Kasten) holding different kinds of bottles, not just one type. The machine may accept some bottles but not the crate itself, so you need to know what to say. This lesson gives you three reusable patterns for asking where to hand in a mixed crate, plus the vocabulary to describe what is inside. You will practise a short exchange with a member of staff and learn how to ask about the deposit value (Pfandwert) without guessing at store rules.
By the end, you can…
- describe a crate that contains different types of bottles using Kasten and gemischt.
- politely ask a member of staff where to hand in a mixed crate.
- ask what the deposit value of the bottles is.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

I have a mixed crate. Where should I hand it in?

Your main request. Use it at the counter or when a member of staff walks past the machine.

Do I hand in the crate here or at the checkout?
moos ikh dayn KAS-ten heer AP-gay-ben OH-der an der KAS-suh
Asks about the place, not the price. Useful when the machine area is unclear.
Wie hoch ist der Pfandwert für diese Flaschen?
What is the deposit value for these bottles?
vee hohkh ist dair PFANT-vairt fewr DEE-zuh FLASH-en
Asks for the deposit amount. The answer depends on bottle type and store.
Kann ich den Kasten auch leer zurückgeben?
Can I also return the crate empty?
kan ikh dayn KAS-ten owkh LAIR tsoo-REUK-gay-ben
Asks whether the crate itself is taken back without bottles inside.
Entschuldigung, können Sie mir bitte helfen?
Excuse me, could you please help me?
ent-SHOOL-dee-goong, KEU-nen zee meer BIT-tuh HEL-fen
A polite opener before your question. Works in most stores.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is: Ich habe einen gemischten Kasten. Wo soll ich ihn abgeben? Here, einen gemischten Kasten is in the accusative because haben takes an accusative object. The adjective ending -en appears after einen. If you have only one kind of bottle, say Ich habe einen Kasten mit Wasserflaschen. If the crate is mixed, keep gemischt: einen gemischten Kasten. For the question, Wo soll ich ihn abgeben? uses ihn to refer back to the masculine noun Kasten. You can swap the verb: Wo kann ich ihn abgeben? or Wo muss ich ihn abgeben? All three are natural and polite.
When to use it
Use this pattern when the bottle-return machine does not accept your crate, or when you are not sure whether the crate goes to the machine or to a staff member. In many stores the machine takes individual bottles, while the empty crate is handled separately. Say Ich habe einen gemischten Kasten. Wo soll ich ihn abgeben? and wait for directions. If the person points to the machine, you can add Und der Kasten? to check the crate. Regional practice varies by store, so asking is better than assuming. Do not state a fixed rule; ask each time.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Politeness matters here. Start with Entschuldigung and use Sie with staff unless they are clearly young and the setting is informal. In smaller shops, staff may take the whole crate at the counter; in larger supermarkets, a machine handles bottles and the crate goes elsewhere. Because practice differs by store and region, ask instead of assuming. A calm, friendly tone is more important than perfect grammar.
One thing to watch for
Saying Ich habe ein gemischt Kasten because Kasten looks like it could be neuter.
Try this instead: Kasten is masculine, so use einen gemischten Kasten in the accusative: Ich habe einen gemischten Kasten. The adjective takes -en after einen. If you are unsure, you can avoid the adjective ending by saying Ich habe einen Kasten mit verschiedenen Flaschen.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'I have a mixed crate' in German?
Show a sample answer
Ich habe einen gemischten Kasten.
This uses the accusative after haben and the correct adjective ending -en after einen. A valid alternative is Ich habe einen Kasten mit gemischten Flaschen, which shifts the adjective to Flaschen.
2You want to ask where to hand in the crate. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
Wo soll ich ihn abgeben?
This question refers back to der Kasten with ihn. Wo kann ich ihn abgeben? is also correct and slightly softer.
3Ask a staff member what the deposit value of the bottles is.
Show a sample answer
Wie hoch ist der Pfandwert für diese Flaschen?
This asks for the deposit amount without assuming a price. You could also ask Was ist der Pfandwert für diese Flaschen? Both are natural.
Learn one core sentence: Ich habe einen gemischten Kasten. Wo soll ich ihn abgeben? Add a polite opener, ask about the Pfandwert, and let staff tell you the store's current practice.
