At a DHL Packstation in Germany, you often need to enter a pickup code (Abholcode) or a shipment number (Sendungsnummer) to open your compartment. If the scanner cannot read the code on your phone screen, you will need to speak with staff or use the keypad. This lesson teaches you the exact German words and polite phrases to clarify which number is needed and to get your parcel.

    By the end, you can…

    • say 'pickup code' and 'shipment number' in German.
    • ask 'Ich möchte ein Paket abholen.'
    • clarify which number is required when the scanner fails.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say what you want to do, use 'Ich möchte' + infinitive at the end: 'Ich möchte ein Paket abholen.' (I would like to pick up a parcel.) You can swap the object: 'Ich möchte ein Paket abgeben.' (I would like to drop off a parcel.) For questions, 'Wie lautet ...?' asks for a specific word or number: 'Wie lautet mein Abholcode?' (What is my pickup code?) and 'Wie lautet meine Sendungsnummer?' (What is my shipment number?) Note that 'Abholcode' is masculine (der Abholcode), while 'Sendungsnummer' is feminine (die Sendungsnummer).

    When to use it

Use 'Abholcode' when you have a short code from a notification, often for a specific locker. Use 'Sendungsnummer' when you have the longer tracking number from the sender. At a Packstation, if the scanner does not read your phone screen, say: 'Der Scanner funktioniert nicht. Ich habe eine Sendungsnummer.' (The scanner is not working. I have a shipment number.) Then ask: 'Welche Nummer brauchen Sie?' (Which number do you need?) If you are at a staffed counter, start with 'Ich möchte ein Paket abholen.' and show your ID or notification.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, DHL Packstationen are automated parcel lockers. The term 'Abholcode' is standard for the pickup code, and 'Sendungsnummer' for the tracking number. Staff at service counters are addressed with 'Sie' (formal you), even in informal settings. If you use 'du' with strangers, it may seem overly familiar. When speaking to a machine or a hotline, 'Sie' is still appropriate.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Postnummer' or 'Abholnummer' for pickup code.

Try this instead: The correct term is 'Abholcode' (der Abholcode). For example: 'Wie lautet mein Abholcode?' Avoid 'Postnummer', which is not used for parcel lockers.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I would like to pick up a parcel' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich möchte ein Paket abholen.

This uses 'möchte' + infinitive 'abholen' at the end. You can also say 'Ich will ein Paket abholen' but 'möchte' is more polite.

2What is the German word for 'shipment number'?

    Show a sample answer

    die Sendungsnummer

It is feminine: die Sendungsnummer. The plural is die Sendungsnummern.

3Ask which number the staff need.

    Show a sample answer

    Welche Nummer brauchen Sie?

This asks for clarification. You could also say 'Brauchen Sie den Abholcode oder die Sendungsnummer?'

    Take this with you

Use 'Abholcode' for the short pickup code and 'Sendungsnummer' for the tracking number. Start with 'Ich möchte ein Paket abholen.' and ask 'Welche Nummer brauchen Sie?' if unsure.
