German for Makerspaces: Asking About Safety Training Before You Use Equipment

Learn polite German questions to ask staff whether you need a safety induction and when the next session takes place, with reusable patterns for a makerspace in Germany.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In a German makerspace, you usually cannot simply switch on a laser cutter, table saw or 3D printer on your first visit. Staff often expect new members to complete a Sicherheitseinweisung, a safety induction, before using certain machines. This lesson gives you two core questions and several polite variations so you can ask about training without sounding demanding. You will practise asking whether an induction is required, when the next one takes place, and how to check what you may use in the meantime. The register is polite, responsible and appropriate for speaking with staff or volunteers.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask politely whether I need a safety induction before using equipment in a German makerspace.
    • ask when the next safety induction takes place and whether I need to register in advance.
    • check which machines I may use before completing the induction.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen?

Do I need to do a safety induction?

    moos ikh EYE-ne ZIKH-er-hites-eye-n-vy-zoong MAKH-en

The most direct polite question. Use it when you are new and want to know whether training is required before using a machine.

Wann findet die nächste Einweisung statt?

When does the next induction take place?

    van FIN-det dee NAY-stuh EYE-n-vy-zoong shtat

Use this after you have learned that an induction is required. It asks for the next scheduled session, not for a private appointment.

Ich würde gern an der nächsten Einweisung teilnehmen.

I would like to take part in the next induction.

    ikh VUER-duh gern an dair NAY-sten EYE-n-vy-zoong TILE-nay-men

A polite way to express interest and commitment. The verb teilnehmen takes the preposition an with the dative: an der Einweisung.

    Muss ich mich vorher anmelden?

Do I need to register in advance?

    moos ikh mikh FOR-hair AN-mel-den

Use this to ask about registration without assuming a particular booking system. It is neutral and works in many contexts.

Welche Geräte darf ich vor der Einweisung benutzen?

Which devices may I use before the induction?

    VEL-khe guh-RAY-tuh darf ikh for dair EYE-n-vy-zoong buh-NUT-sen

Use this to clarify what is allowed before training. It shows that you respect the rules rather than trying to bypass them.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The modal verb müssen is central here. In the question Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen?, the verb comes first, then ich, then the object. The noun Sicherheitseinweisung is feminine, so the indefinite article is eine. If you want to ask about a different requirement, replace the noun: Muss ich einen Kurs machen? (masculine), Muss ich eine Prüfung machen? (feminine). For the next session, use Wann findet ... statt? This is a separable verb: statt comes at the end of the sentence. You can also ask Wann ist die nächste Einweisung? which is slightly more informal but still polite.

    When to use it

Use Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen? when you are unsure whether training is mandatory for the equipment you want to use. Use Wann findet die nächste Einweisung statt? when you already know that training is required and you want to plan. If you want to be extra polite, add Entschuldigung, before the question: Entschuldigung, muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen? To ask about registration, use Muss ich mich vorher anmelden? The reflexive verb sich anmelden is common for signing up. Avoid asking for a private session unless staff offer it; instead ask about the next group session.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Entschuldigung, ich bin neu hier. Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen?

Excuse me, I'm new here. Do I need to do a safety induction?ent-SHOOL-dee-goong, ikh bin noy heer. moos ikh EYE-ne ZIKH-er-hites-eye-n-vy-zoong MAKH-en
    B

Ja, für die meisten Geräte ist eine Einweisung Pflicht.

Yes, for most devices an induction is mandatory.ya, fuer dee MICE-ten guh-RAY-tuh ist EYE-ne EYE-n-vy-zoong pflicht
    A

Alles klar. Wann findet die nächste Einweisung statt?

All right. When does the next induction take place?AL-es klar. van FIN-det dee NAY-stuh EYE-n-vy-zoong shtat
    B

Am Donnerstag um 18 Uhr. Muss ich Sie dafür anmelden?

    On Thursday at 6 p.m. Should I register you for it?am DON-ers-takh oom AKHT-tsayn oo-er. moos ikh zee da-FUER AN-mel-den

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, safety training is often taken seriously and may be required by insurance or house rules. Staff and volunteers usually appreciate a direct, polite question rather than someone trying to use a machine without instruction. Use Sie with staff you do not know, and avoid touching equipment before you have been shown how to use it. If you are unsure, ask rather than assume.

    One thing to watch for

Using Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen? with the wrong article, for example Muss ich ein Sicherheitseinweisung machen?

Try this instead: Sicherheitseinweisung is feminine, so the correct form is eine: Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen? If you are unsure of a noun's gender, learn the article together with the noun from the start.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You are new at a makerspace and want to know whether you need training before using the laser cutter. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen?

This directly asks whether a safety induction is required. You could also ask Muss ich für den Lasercutter eine Einweisung machen? to name the specific machine.

2Staff confirm that training is required. How do you ask when the next session takes place?

    Show a sample answer

Wann findet die nächste Einweisung statt?

This asks for the next scheduled induction. A valid alternative is Wann ist die nächste Einweisung? which is slightly more informal but still polite.

3You want to know whether you must sign up in advance. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    Muss ich mich vorher anmelden?

This uses the reflexive verb sich anmelden and asks about advance registration. You could also ask Muss ich einen Termin vereinbaren? if you want to ask about booking an appointment.

    Take this with you

Ask Muss ich eine Sicherheitseinweisung machen? to check whether training is required, then Wann findet die nächste Einweisung statt? to plan your visit. Keep the register polite, use Sie with staff, and never assume you may use equipment before an induction.
