German for Extending a Loan at a Library of Things

Learn polite German phrases to ask whether you can renew a borrowed item and how long you may keep it at a Library of Things in Germany.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

At a Library of Things in Germany, you borrow objects such as tools, kitchen appliances or camping gear instead of buying them. Loan periods vary by library and by item, so if you need more time, you ask staff directly. This lesson teaches two core questions: Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern? and Wie lange kann ich den Gegenstand noch behalten? You will also learn polite follow-up questions about renewing online, returning the item and any waiting list. The register is polite and inquiring, using Sie with staff.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask politely whether I can extend a loan at a Library of Things.
    • ask how long I may still keep a borrowed object.
    • understand and respond to a staff member's answer about loan periods.
    • ask whether renewal is possible online or only in person.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern?

    Can I extend the loan?

    kahn ikh dee OWS-ly-uh fehr-LENG-ern

Standard polite question with Kann ich. Use it at the counter or on the phone. Ausleihe means the loan or borrowing period.

Wie lange kann ich den Gegenstand noch behalten?

How long can I still keep the object?

vee LAHNG-uh kahn ikh dane GAY-gen-shtahnt nokh buh-HAHL-ten

Gegenstand is a neutral word for a physical object. Use noch to ask about the remaining time.

Kann ich die Ausleihe online verlängern?

Can I extend the loan online?

    kahn ikh dee OWS-ly-uh ON-line fehr-LENG-ern

Useful if you want to avoid a trip to the library. Online is widely understood in German.

Muss ich den Gegenstand zurückbringen oder kann ich ihn später abgeben?

Do I have to bring the object back, or can I hand it in later?

    moos ikh dane GAY-gen-shtahnt tsoo-RÜK-bring-en OH-der kahn ikh een SHPATE-er AP-gay-ben

zurückbringen means to bring back; abgeben means to hand in or drop off. Use this to clarify the return process.

Gibt es eine Warteliste für diesen Gegenstand?

Is there a waiting list for this object?

    geept es EYE-nuh VAR-tuh-liss-tuh fewr DEE-zen GAY-gen-shtahnt

Warteliste means waiting list. Ask this if the item is popular and renewal may not be possible.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The modal verb kann comes in second position, and the main verb goes to the end: Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern? You can swap the object: Kann ich den Bohrer verlängern? (Can I extend the drill?) or Kann ich die Nähmaschine verlängern? (Can I extend the sewing machine?) For a more formal tone, use Könnte ich instead of Kann ich: Könnte ich die Ausleihe verlängern? This sounds slightly more tentative and polite.

    When to use it

Use these questions when you are at the service desk, calling the library, or writing a short message. If you already know the item, name it: Wie lange kann ich den Akkuschrauber noch behalten? (How long can I still keep the cordless screwdriver?) If you do not know the item word, use Gegenstand or simply das Ding in casual speech, though Gegenstand is safer with staff. Always use Sie with library staff: Können Sie mir sagen, wie lange ich den Gegenstand noch behalten kann? (Can you tell me how long I can still keep the object?)

    Understanding the answer

Staff may answer with a date or a number of days: Sie können ihn bis Freitag behalten. (You can keep it until Friday.) or Noch drei Tage. (Three more days.) You may hear eine Verlängerung ist nicht möglich (an extension is not possible) or der Gegenstand ist reserviert (the object is reserved). If you need to confirm, repeat back: Also bis Freitag, richtig? (So until Friday, correct?) This shows you understood and avoids misunderstandings.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Guten Tag, ich habe einen Bohrer ausgeliehen. Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern?

    Hello, I borrowed a drill. Can I extend the loan?GOO-ten tahk, ikh HAH-buh EYE-nen BOH-rer OWS-guh-lee-en. kahn ikh dee OWS-ly-uh fehr-LENG-ern
    B

Ja, das ist möglich. Wie lange brauchen Sie den Bohrer noch?

Yes, that is possible. How long do you still need the drill?yah, das ist MURG-likh. vee LAHNG-uh BROW-khen zee dane BOH-rer nokh
    A

Wie lange kann ich den Gegenstand noch behalten? Ich brauche ihn bis Montag.

How long can I still keep the object? I need it until Monday.vee LAHNG-uh kahn ikh dane GAY-gen-shtahnt nokh buh-HAHL-ten? ikh BROW-khuh een bis MON-tahk
    B

Sie können ihn bis Montag behalten. Eine Verlängerung ist einmal möglich.

You can keep it until Monday. One extension is possible.zee KUR-nen een bis MON-tahk buh-HAHL-ten. EYE-nuh fehr-LENG-uh-roong ist EYNE-mahl MURG-likh

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, loan periods at a Library of Things are set by the individual library and can differ from public libraries. Staff usually appreciate a direct, polite question rather than a long explanation. Using Sie and a friendly Guten Tag is standard. Some libraries allow renewal online, others only in person or by phone. If the item is reserved, staff may offer an alternative object instead of an extension.

    One thing to watch for

    Ich kann verlängern die Ausleihe?

Try this instead: In a German question with a modal verb, the modal comes first and the main verb goes to the end: Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern? Do not keep English word order. Say Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern? or Könnte ich die Ausleihe verlängern?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask politely whether you can extend the loan?

    Show a sample answer

    Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern?

This uses the modal kann in second position and the infinitive verlängern at the end. Könnte ich die Ausleihe verlängern? is also correct and slightly more formal.

2You borrowed a drill and need it until Monday. Ask how long you can still keep it.

    Show a sample answer

Wie lange kann ich den Bohrer noch behalten?

This asks about the remaining time with noch. You can also say Wie lange kann ich den Gegenstand noch behalten? if you do not know or do not want to name the item.

3Staff say the item is reserved. What question can you ask about a waiting list?

    Show a sample answer

Gibt es eine Warteliste für diesen Gegenstand?

This asks whether there is a waiting list. You could also ask Kann ich den Gegenstand später abgeben? if you want to clarify the return process.

    Take this with you

Ask Kann ich die Ausleihe verlängern? and Wie lange kann ich den Gegenstand noch behalten? Use Sie, name the item if you can, and confirm the new return date clearly.
