German at the Flea Market: Asking for a Demonstration Before You Buy

Learn polite German phrases to ask sellers to demonstrate an item, test it yourself, and check if it works perfectly at a flea market.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

At a German flea market, it is normal to ask a seller to show you how something works before you buy. This lesson teaches you three key sentences: 'Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?' (Can you show me how it works?), 'Funktioniert es einwandfrei?' (Does it work perfectly?), and 'Ich möchte es vor dem Kauf testen.' (I would like to test it before buying). You will also learn how to ask about trying the item yourself and what to say if you need to plug it in or turn it on. The register is polite and direct, which is standard in Germany. By the end, you will be able to handle a typical flea-market interaction with confidence.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a seller to demonstrate how an item works.
    • ask whether an item functions perfectly.
    • express that I want to test an item before buying.
    • ask to try the item myself and check if it can be turned on.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?

Can you show me how it works?

    KÖN-nen zee meer TSAI-gen, vee es foonk-tsyo-NEERT?

Polite standard German. Use 'Sie' with strangers. Works for any device or object.

    Funktioniert es einwandfrei?

    Does it work perfectly?

    foonk-tsyo-NEERT es AIN-vahnt-fry?

Asks about flawless functioning. 'Einwandfrei' means without any faults.

Ich möchte es vor dem Kauf testen.

I would like to test it before buying.

ikh MÖKH-te es for dem KOWF TES-ten.

Polite way to say you want to try before you buy. 'Möchte' is a polite form of 'want'.

    Kann ich es selbst ausprobieren?

Can I try it out myself?

    kan ikh es zelpst OWS-pro-BEE-ren?

Use when you want to handle the item yourself, not just watch.

    Können Sie es anschalten?

    Can you turn it on?

    KÖN-nen zee es AN-shal-ten?

For electrical items. If it needs a battery, ask: 'Haben Sie Batterien?' (Do you have batteries?)

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The modal verb 'können' (can) is very useful for polite requests. In a main clause with a modal verb, the modal comes in second position and the main verb goes to the end: 'Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?' Literally: 'Can you to me show, how it functions?' The same pattern works with other verbs: 'Können Sie es testen?' (Can you test it?), 'Kann ich es sehen?' (Can I see it?). 'Möchten' (would like) works the same way as a polite alternative: 'Ich möchte es testen.' Note that 'funktionieren' is a regular verb: ich funktioniere, du funktionierst, es funktioniert.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at flea markets, second-hand shops, or private sales. Start with 'Entschuldigung' (Excuse me) to get attention. If the seller is busy, wait or say 'Hätten Sie kurz Zeit?' (Would you have a moment?). When asking for a demonstration, point to the item and use 'Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?' If you want to test it yourself, say 'Kann ich es selbst ausprobieren?' For electrical items, ask 'Können Sie es anschalten?' If it does not work, you can say 'Es funktioniert nicht' and decide not to buy. Always be polite; directness is fine, but use 'Sie' unless the seller is clearly a friend or young person.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, testing items at flea markets is common and expected, especially for electronics. Sellers usually do not mind if you ask politely. However, some private sellers may not have a way to demonstrate (e.g., no power outlet), so be prepared to ask 'Können Sie es anschalten?' or bring your own batteries. It is also normal to negotiate, but first check that the item works. Always use 'Sie' with strangers unless they offer 'du' first.

    One thing to watch for

Forgetting the word 'einwandfrei' and saying 'Funktioniert es gut?' which is less precise, or translating 'Does it work?' word-for-word as 'Tut es arbeiten?'

Try this instead: Stick to 'Funktioniert es einwandfrei?' for a clear yes/no about flawless function. If you want to ask more casually, you can say 'Funktioniert es gut?' but 'einwandfrei' is stronger and more specific. Do not translate 'Does it work?' as 'Tut es arbeiten?' — that is not German. Use 'Funktioniert es?'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a seller to show you how an item works?

    Show a sample answer

Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?

This is the standard polite request. You could also say 'Können Sie mir das zeigen?' if the item is clear from context.

2You want to test a radio before buying. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

Ich möchte es vor dem Kauf testen.

This clearly states your intention. Alternatively, 'Kann ich es vor dem Kauf testen?' is also correct and slightly more casual.

3Ask if you can try the item yourself.

    Show a sample answer

    Kann ich es selbst ausprobieren?

This asks for permission to handle it. 'Ausprobieren' means to try out. You could also say 'Darf ich es mal ausprobieren?' which is equally polite.

    Take this with you

At a German flea market, politely ask 'Können Sie mir zeigen, wie es funktioniert?' and 'Funktioniert es einwandfrei?' before saying 'Ich möchte es vor dem Kauf testen.' These phrases show respect and help you avoid buying something that does not work.
