German for the Allotment: Asking for Help Cutting Surplus Herbs
Learn friendly German phrases to ask a fellow gardener or staff member for help cutting excess herbs, using Kräuter, schneiden and Überschuss.

In a shared allotment garden (Schrebergarten), herbs like parsley, chives or mint can grow faster than you can use them. When you have more than you need, it is practical to ask someone nearby for help cutting them back. This lesson teaches you how to make that request in friendly, everyday German. You will learn the key words Kräuter (herbs), schneiden (to cut) and Überschuss (surplus), and how to use the pattern Kannst du mir helfen, ...? to ask for assistance. The focus is on speaking with a fellow gardener or a staff member at the allotment, not on formal service language. By the end, you will be able to explain your situation and ask for help in a natural, polite way.
By the end, you can…
- name herbs and the action of cutting in German.
- ask someone for help with a specific task using Kannst du mir helfen ...?
- explain that I have too many herbs and need to cut them.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
The pattern Kannst du mir helfen, ... zu ...? is very common for asking for help with a specific action. The verb at the end goes in the infinitive with zu. For example: Kannst du mir helfen, die Kräuter zu schneiden? (Can you help me cut the herbs?) or Kannst du mir helfen, den Überschuss zu ernten? (Can you help me harvest the surplus?). With Sie: Können Sie mir helfen, ... zu ...? Note that helfen takes the dative case: mir (me), dir (you), Ihnen (you formal).
When to use it
Use the du-form with fellow allotment gardeners, friends or family. Use the Sie-form with staff, officials or people you have just met. If you are unsure, start with a friendly Hallo and a smile, then use Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? to stay polite. For example, at the allotment office: Entschuldigung, könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? Ich habe einen Überschuss an Kräutern und brauche eine Schere. (Excuse me, could you please help me? I have a surplus of herbs and need scissors.)
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Hallo! Ich habe zu viele Kräuter. Kannst du mir helfen, den Überschuss zu schneiden?
Hello! I have too many herbs. Can you help me cut the surplus?ha-LO! ikh HAH-be tsoo FEE-le KRÖY-ter. KAHNST doo meer HEL-fen, den Ü-ber-shus tsoo SHNY-den?Klar, gerne. Hast du eine Schere?
Sure, gladly. Do you have scissors?klahr, GER-ne. hast doo EYE-ne SHEH-re?Ja, hier ist eine. Wir können die Kräuter in kleine Bündel schneiden.
Yes, here is one. We can cut the herbs into small bundles.yah, heer ist EYE-ne. veer KÖN-nen dee KRÖY-ter in KLY-ne BÜN-del SHNY-den.Gute Idee. Dann können wir sie trocknen oder verschenken.
Good idea. Then we can dry them or give them away.GOO-te ee-DAY. dan KÖN-nen veer zee TROK-en o-der fer-SHEN-ken.A little context goes a long way
In German allotments (Schrebergärten), community and helpfulness are valued, but it is polite to ask before taking or cutting plants that are not yours. A friendly Hallo and a clear request go a long way. Use du with people you know; use Sie with staff or strangers. If you are offering herbs to others, you can say Möchtest du ein paar Kräuter haben? (Would you like a few herbs?)
One thing to watch for
Using the wrong case after helfen: Kannst du mich helfen?
Try this instead: Helfen takes the dative, so say Kannst du mir helfen? (Can you help me?). For example: Kannst du mir helfen, die Kräuter zu schneiden? not Kannst du mich helfen.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
