Giving Opinions in German Formal Meetings: "Meiner Meinung nach" and Related Phrases
Learn to state opinions politely and clearly in German business meetings using phrases like "Meiner Meinung nach" and "Aus meiner Sicht" — formal register only.

In German professional meetings, stating an opinion requires a register that is direct but polite, and clearly marked as your personal view rather than a general truth. This lesson teaches you fixed opinion phrases such as "Meiner Meinung nach ..." and "Aus meiner Sicht ...", how they affect word order, and how to soften or strengthen a position appropriately. You will practise only formal, workplace-appropriate language, not casual chat.
By the end, you can…
- open a formal opinion in German using "Meiner Meinung nach" or "Aus meiner Sicht".
- correctly place the verb after an opinion phrase in a German statement.
- politely disagree or add a counter-opinion in a business meeting.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Formal and somewhat weighty. The verb goes to the end of the dass-clause: "... dass wir mehr Zeit brauchen".

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
German opinion phrases act as a front element, so the finite verb moves to position two. Compare: "Meiner Meinung nach ist das Risiko hoch." (verb "ist" directly after the phrase) and "Aus meiner Sicht sollten wir warten." (verb "sollten" directly after the phrase). If you begin with "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass ...", the verb in the dass-clause goes to the end: "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass wir warten sollten."
When to use it
Use "Meiner Meinung nach" and "Aus meiner Sicht" in meetings, presentations and written comments where you address people with "Sie". Use "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass ..." for formal statements or minutes. For disagreement, "Da muss ich Ihnen widersprechen" is polite in a business setting; "Das sehe ich anders" is shorter and neutral. Avoid casual forms such as "Ich finde halt ..." in formal meetings.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In German business meetings, a clearly marked personal opinion is generally welcome and can be more direct than in some English-speaking contexts. Still, use "Sie" forms and phrases like "Meiner Meinung nach" to keep the tone professional. Regional differences are minor here; Austrian and Swiss German use the same standard phrases, though Swiss German speakers may pronounce "ch" differently.
One thing to watch for
"Meiner Meinung nach, ich denke, dass ..."
Try this instead: Do not stack two opinion markers. Choose one: "Meiner Meinung nach ist der Plan gut" or "Ich denke, dass der Plan gut ist." Also remember the verb position: after "Meiner Meinung nach" the verb comes second, not at the end.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Rearrange into a correct formal opinion: "nach / Meinung / meiner / wichtig / ist / das"
Show a sample answer
Meiner Meinung nach ist das wichtig.
The opinion phrase occupies position one, so the finite verb "ist" comes in position two. Other word orders with the same meaning are not standard here.
2Which phrase politely disagrees using formal "you"?
Show a sample answer
Da muss ich Ihnen widersprechen.
This uses the dative formal pronoun "Ihnen" and is appropriate with "Sie" addressees. "Das sehe ich anders" also disagrees but is more neutral and shorter.
3Complete with correct verb position: "Aus meiner Sicht ___ wir mehr Zeit ___ ." (brauchen)
Show a sample answer
Aus meiner Sicht brauchen wir mehr Zeit.
After the fronted phrase "Aus meiner Sicht", the finite verb "brauchen" comes second. A dass-clause version would be "Ich bin der Ansicht, dass wir mehr Zeit brauchen."
In formal German meetings, open with one clear opinion phrase, put the verb in position two, and use "Sie" forms when disagreeing.
