Learn German phrases to thank a host at an event and follow up afterward, including danke für die Einladung, ich hatte eine schöne Zeit, and es war sehr nett bei dir.

Thanking a host in German is not the same as a general danke. When someone invites you to dinner, a party, or a weekend visit, German speakers often name the invitation or the time spent together. This lesson teaches elementary phrases for saying "thanks for having me" and "I had a great time," plus a short follow-up message. You will also learn which phrases work in formal and informal situations.

Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is Danke für + accusative noun. Die Einladung stays die Einladung after für, so you say Danke für die Einladung. You can also thank someone for a specific thing: Danke für das Essen (thanks for the meal), Danke für den Abend (thanks for the evening). For a visit, use Danke für den schönen Abend or Danke für die schöne Zeit. To say you had a good time, use Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit or Es war sehr schön. These are complete, natural sentences.
When to use it
Use Danke für die Einladung when you arrive or when you leave. Use Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit or Es war sehr nett bei dir when you say goodbye. A follow-up message the next day is common: Danke nochmal für den schönen Abend. Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit. For formal situations, use Ihnen instead of dir: Es war sehr nett bei Ihnen. If you are writing to a group, use bei euch. German speakers often combine thanks with a concrete detail, for example Danke für das leckere Essen.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Danke für die Einladung! Es war sehr nett bei dir.

Yes, gladly. See you soon!yah, zair gairn. bis bahltA little context goes a long way
In German-speaking countries, thanking a host often includes a specific detail, such as the food or the evening. A short message the next day is appreciated and common. Use du and dir with friends, family, and informal hosts; use Sie and Ihnen with formal hosts, older acquaintances, or business contacts. In Austria and parts of southern Germany, Servus can replace Hallo or Tschüss in informal settings, but it is not a thank-you phrase.
One thing to watch for
Using bei dir for a host you address with Sie, or assuming every first-person thank-you sentence needs a formal-address change.
Try this instead: Use Es war sehr nett bei Ihnen for a host you address with Sie, and bei dir for someone you address with du. Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit contains no pronoun addressing the host and can stay the same. Danke für die Einladung thanks someone for the invitation; Danke, dass ich kommen durfte thanks them for having you.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you thank a host informally for letting you come?
Show a sample answer
Danke, dass ich kommen durfte.
This phrase means "Thanks for having me." Durfte is the simple past of dürfen: it says you were allowed to come. The sentence expresses appreciation; durfte is not a special polite conjugation. Danke für die Einladung is also correct when you specifically mean the invitation.
2You want to say "I had a great time" after a dinner. What do you say?
Show a sample answer
Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit.
This is a standard, natural sentence. Es war sehr schön is also correct and slightly more general.
3How do you adjust Es war sehr nett bei dir for a formal host?
Show a sample answer
Es war sehr nett bei Ihnen.
Replace dir with Ihnen to address a formal host. For a group of friends, use bei euch.
Thank the host with Danke für die Einladung, add Danke, dass ich kommen durfte for "thanks for having me," and follow up with Ich hatte eine schöne Zeit or Es war sehr nett bei dir. Match dir or Ihnen to the situation.
