Includes practice questions and sample answers.

In German, saying you are vegan is straightforward: Ich bin vegan. But to eat confidently, you also need to distinguish vegan from vegetarian, ask whether a dish contains animal products, and name the ingredients you avoid. This lesson gives you the core phrases and a simple pattern for talking about your diet.

    By the end, you can…

    • say 'I am vegan' and 'I am vegetarian' in German.
    • ask whether a dish contains animal products.
    • name common animal products I avoid, such as milk, eggs, and meat.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Ich bin vegan.

    I am vegan.

    ikh bin VAY-gahn

Standard German. Use this to state your diet clearly. The adjective vegan is invariable here.

    Ich bin Vegetarier.

    I am vegetarian. (male speaker)

    ikh bin veh-geh-TAH-ree-er

A male speaker uses this form. A female speaker says Ich bin Vegetarierin (veh-geh-TAH-ree-er-in).

    Ich esse keine tierischen Produkte.

    I don't eat animal products.

    ikh ES-se KYE-ne TEE-rish-en pro-DOOK-te

A precise way to explain veganism. Tierisch means 'animal' (from Tier, animal); Produkte means 'products'.

    Ist das vegan?

    Is that vegan?

    ist das VAY-gahn

Use this when pointing at a menu item or dish. The question word order is verb first.

    Enthält das Milch oder Eier?

Does that contain milk or eggs?

    ent-HELT das milkh OH-der EYE-er

Enthält is the third-person singular of enthalten (to contain). Use it for checking specific ingredients.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say what you don't eat, use kein- before a noun. The ending changes with the noun's gender and case: keine for feminine and plural nouns, keinen for masculine nouns in the accusative, and kein for neuter nouns in the nominative or accusative. For example: Ich esse keine Eier (I don't eat eggs), Ich trinke keine Milch (I don't drink milk), Ich esse keinen Käse (I don't eat cheese), Ich esse kein Fleisch (I don't eat meat). Learn each phrase with its noun so the ending becomes automatic.

    When to use it

Use Ich bin vegan. as a direct statement about yourself. Use the question Ist das vegan? when you need a quick yes/no answer about a specific dish. If you want to be more precise, say Ich esse keine tierischen Produkte. or list what you avoid: keine Milch, keine Eier, kein Fleisch, keinen Fisch. In restaurants, it is normal to ask politely: Entschuldigung, ist das vegan? (Excuse me, is that vegan?).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Thank you. Is there something without milk and eggs?DAN-ke. geept es ET-vas OH-ne milkh unt EYE-er
    B

Yes, the salad is vegan. It has no meat, no cheese, and no eggs.yah, dair zah-LAHT ist VAY-gahn. air haht kyn FLYSH, KYE-nen KAY-ze unt KYE-ne EYE-er

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, vegan and vegetarian options are increasingly common, but it is still wise to ask. The word vegan is widely understood. Vegetarisch typically includes dairy and eggs, so if you avoid those, say vegan or specify keine Milch, keine Eier. Politeness matters: start with Entschuldigung (Excuse me) or a friendly Guten Tag before asking about ingredients.

    One thing to watch for

Saying Ich bin ein Veganer to mean 'I am vegan'.

Try this instead: Ich bin ein Veganer literally means 'I am a vegan person' and can sound like a label. The natural way to state your diet is Ich bin vegan. If you want a noun, say Ich bin Veganer (male) or Ich bin Veganerin (female), but the adjective form is more common in everyday speech.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I am vegan' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich bin vegan.

This is the standard, natural way to state your diet. Ich bin Vegetarier/Vegetarierin is the equivalent for vegetarian, but it does not mean vegan.

2Ask whether a dish contains milk or eggs.

    Show a sample answer

    Enthält das Milch oder Eier?

This uses enthält (contains) with the accusative objects Milch and Eier. You could also ask Ist da Milch oder Ei drin? in casual speech.

    3Say 'I don't eat meat.'

    Show a sample answer

    Ich esse kein Fleisch.

Fleisch is neuter, so the negative article is kein. For feminine or plural nouns, use keine, as in Ich esse keine Eier.

    Take this with you

Use Ich bin vegan. to state your diet, and ask Ist das vegan? or Enthält das Milch oder Eier? to check specific dishes. Remember that vegetarisch usually includes dairy and eggs, so be explicit if you avoid them.
