German for Beginners: Saying You Eat Halal or Kosher

Learn to say "I eat halal" or "I eat kosher" in German, name the religious rules behind it, and explain how this differs from other diets.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

If you keep halal or kosher, you will often need to explain it in German. The key verb is "essen" (to eat), and the words you need are "halal" and "koscher". German has no single everyday word for "I keep a religious diet", so you say what you eat and what you avoid. This lesson gives you short, polite sentences for shops, restaurants, host families and colleagues, plus the vocabulary to explain that your diet follows religious rules, not a health trend.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that I eat halal or kosher in German.
    • name the religious rules behind my diet, such as pork or mixing meat and milk.
    • politely explain how my diet differs from vegetarian or vegan eating.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Ich esse halal.

    I eat halal.

    ikh ESS-uh ha-LAHL

Simple, direct statement. Use it with friends, colleagues or a host family once you know them.

    Ich esse koscher.

    I eat kosher.

    ikh ESS-uh KOH-sher

Standard German spelling is "koscher". Use it the same way as "halal".

    Ich ernähre mich halal.

    I follow a halal diet.

    ikh er-NAIR-uh mikh ha-LAHL

"Sich ernähren" means "to feed oneself" and sounds a little more formal, good for doctors or officials.

    Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch.

    I don't eat pork.

    ikh ESS-uh kine SHVINE-flysh

The most useful practical sentence. "Schweinefleisch" is pork; "kein" negates a noun.

Aus religiösen Gründen esse ich kein Fleisch, das nicht halal ist.

For religious reasons, I don't eat meat that isn't halal.

ows re-li-GYUR-zun GRUEN-dun ESS-uh ikh kine FLYSH, das nikht ha-LAHL ist

A full explanation for restaurants or caterers. Swap "halal" for "koscher" as needed.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Use "Ich esse ..." plus a food word, or "Ich esse kein/keine ..." to say what you avoid. Examples: "Ich esse halal." (I eat halal.) "Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch." (I don't eat pork.) "Ich esse keine Meeresfrüchte." (I don't eat seafood.) For a rule rather than a food, use "Ich esse kein Fleisch, das nicht koscher ist." (I don't eat meat that isn't kosher.) The verb "essen" changes: ich esse, du isst, er/sie isst, wir essen.

    When to use it

Say "Ich esse halal" or "Ich esse koscher" when someone offers you food or asks about your diet. In a restaurant, "Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch" is often clearer than a single word, because the kitchen may not know "halal". If someone asks whether you are vegetarian, answer: "Nein, ich esse Fleisch, aber nur halal." (No, I eat meat, but only halal.) This shows your diet is religious, not a general food preference.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    B

    A

    B

    Then I'll take the chicken. You see, I don't eat pork.dan NAY-muh ikh das HAIN-khen. ikh ESS-uh NAYM-likh kine SHVINE-flysh

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, "halal" and "koscher" are widely understood, but many people still connect them mainly with meat. If you also avoid alcohol or mixing meat and milk, say so directly: "Ich trinke keinen Alkohol" or "Ich esse kein Fleisch und keine Milch zusammen." In Austria and Switzerland the standard written forms are the same; in casual speech you may hear "koscher" pronounced with a short "o". Being specific is polite and prevents misunderstandings.

    One thing to watch for

Saying "Ich bin halal" to mean "I eat halal."

Try this instead: "Halal" describes food or rules, not people. Say "Ich esse halal" or "Ich ernähre mich halal." If you want to name the rule, say "Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch" or "Ich esse nur halal."

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say "I eat kosher" in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich esse koscher.

This uses "ich esse" plus the adjective "koscher". "Ich ernähre mich koscher" is also correct but more formal.

2You want to say you don't eat pork. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch.

"Kein" negates the noun "Schweinefleisch". "Ich esse kein Schwein" is understandable but less precise, because "Schwein" can mean the animal.

3Someone asks if you are vegetarian. How do you explain that your diet is religious?

    Show a sample answer

Nein, ich esse Fleisch, aber nur halal. Aus religiösen Gründen.

This corrects the assumption and gives the reason. "Ich esse nur koscher" works the same way for kosher rules.

    Take this with you

Use "Ich esse halal" or "Ich esse koscher" for a quick answer, and "Ich esse kein Schweinefleisch" or "Aus religiösen Gründen ..." when you need to explain the religious rule clearly.
