You will practice essential vocabulary and structures to describe your concept clearly and persuasively. We will cover key phrases, a useful pattern for structuring your pitch, and a dialogue to illustrate a typical conversation. By the end, you will be able to articulate your vision in German, using appropriate formal and informal language.

    By the end, you can…

    • explain the target audience and unique features of my concept.
    • use appropriate phrases to present a business idea formally.

    Useful pattern

To describe what makes your concept unique, use the pattern: 'Das Besondere an [item] ist [feature].' For example, 'Das Besondere an unserem Café ist die hausgemachte Schokolade.' (The special thing about our café is the homemade chocolate.) You can also use 'Was uns besonders macht, ist ...' (What makes us special is ...). This pattern helps you clearly state your unique selling proposition.

    When to use it

Use these phrases in formal pitches, business meetings, or when talking to potential investors. For a more casual setting, such as talking to friends or colleagues, you can simplify: 'Unser Konzept ist besonders, weil ...' (Our concept is special because ...). Always consider your audience: use 'Sie' for formal and 'du' for informal. For example, 'Ich möchte dir mein Konzept vorstellen' (I would like to present my concept to you) when speaking informally.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In German business culture, clarity and directness are valued. When presenting a concept, it's common to get straight to the point and avoid overly promotional language. Use formal titles and 'Sie' until invited to use 'du'. Additionally, sustainability and regional sourcing are increasingly important topics in Germany, so highlighting these aspects can be advantageous.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'vorstellen' without an object, e.g., 'Ich möchte mein Konzept vorstellen' (I would like to present my concept) – this is incomplete because 'vorstellen' needs a dative object (the person addressed) when used in the sense of 'to present someone with something'.

Try this instead: Add the dative object for the person addressed: 'Ich möchte Ihnen mein Konzept vorstellen' (I would like to present my concept to you). Note that 'Ich möchte mir Ihr Konzept vorstellen' means 'I would like to imagine your concept' – 'sich (dat.) etwas vorstellen' is a different meaning ('to imagine something'). For presenting to someone, use 'Ich möchte Ihnen ... vorstellen'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'Our product is characterized by its durability' in German?

    Show a sample answer

Unser Produkt zeichnet sich durch seine Langlebigkeit aus.

This uses the pattern 'sich durch ... auszeichnen' to highlight a feature. Alternatively, you could say 'Unser Produkt ist bekannt für seine Langlebigkeit.'

2What phrase would you use to formally introduce your concept to a potential investor?

    Show a sample answer

Ich möchte Ihnen mein Konzept vorstellen.

This is a polite and formal way to begin a pitch. In informal settings, you could say 'Ich möchte dir mein Konzept vorstellen.'

3Translate: 'The special thing about our restaurant is the regional cuisine.'

    Show a sample answer

Das Besondere an unserem Restaurant ist die regionale Küche.

This follows the pattern 'Das Besondere an ... ist ...'. You could also say 'Was unser Restaurant besonders macht, ist die regionale Küche.'

    Take this with you

When presenting a concept in German, be clear and direct. Use formal language with 'Sie' and highlight your unique selling point with patterns like 'Das Besondere an ... ist ...'. Practice these phrases to pitch confidently.
