German for Beginners: Talking About Music You Love
Learn to say you love pop or are a big jazz fan in German, and compare music tastes with friends using gern, mögen and Fan sein.

In this lesson you will learn to express what music you love and to compare tastes with a friend in German. You will use three common patterns: Ich liebe ... (I love ...), Ich bin ein großer Fan von ... (I'm a big fan of ...), and Ich höre gern ... (I like listening to ...). German nouns for music genres are usually used without an article in general statements, and the verb comes in second position in a normal statement. We will practise short, natural sentences for pop, rock, jazz, classical music and specific artists.

Strong, simple statement. Popmusik is feminine, but in general statements German usually drops the article.
Ich bin ein großer Fan von Jazz.
I'm a big fan of jazz.

Use ein großer Fan von + dative for a person or genre. Fan is masculine, so it stays ein großer Fan for any speaker; a feminine form like eine große Fanin is not standard and should be avoided.
Ich höre gern Rock.
I like listening to rock.
ikh HUR-uh gairn rok
gern means 'gladly, like doing'. It comes after the verb. This is the most natural way to say you enjoy a genre.

Informal question with du. The verb hörst comes second, then du.
Ich mag klassische Musik nicht so gern.
I don't like classical music very much.

nicht so gern softens a negative. Use it to disagree politely with a friend's taste.

Useful pattern
To talk about music tastes, use three main patterns. 1) Ich liebe + genre: Ich liebe Popmusik. 2) Ich bin ein großer Fan von + genre or artist: Ich bin ein großer Fan von Jazz. 3) Ich höre gern + genre: Ich höre gern Rock. In general statements, German often uses genre nouns without an article: Ich mag Jazz, not Ich mag den Jazz. With a specific band, use the name: Ich bin ein großer Fan von Rammstein.
When to use it
Use Ich liebe for strong feelings, Ich bin ein großer Fan von for artists and bands, and Ich höre gern for everyday preferences. To compare with a friend, ask Was hörst du gern? and react with Ich auch! (Me too!) or Ich nicht. (I don't.) If you want to disagree gently, say Das ist nicht so mein Ding. (That's not really my thing.) Use the formal question Was hören Sie gern? with strangers or older people.

In German-speaking countries, music taste is a common small-talk topic, but direct negative comments about someone's favourite band can sound harsh. Soften disagreement with nicht so gern or Das ist nicht so mein Ding. In Austria and Switzerland, gern is standard, and in Swiss German you may hear gärn; in writing, standard German gern is always understood.
One thing to watch for
Ich bin eine große Fan von Jazz.
Try this instead: Fan is masculine, so use ein großer Fan: Ich bin ein großer Fan von Jazz. This form is correct for any speaker; a feminine form like eine große Fanin is not standard and should be avoided.

After von, the adjective ending changes to -er: klassischer Musik. You may also hear Ich bin ein großer Fan von Klassik, which is common and correct.
