A simple compliment often follows this pattern: possessive + noun + ist + adverb + adjective. For example: Deine Wohnung ist sehr schön. Ihr Haus ist wirklich schön. You can also use gefallen: Die Küche gefällt mir gut ('I like the kitchen'). In German, gefallen literally means 'to please', so the room is the subject and the person is in the dative: mir, dir, Ihnen. This pattern lets you compliment a specific detail without making a broad judgment about the whole home.
When to use it
Use a short compliment when you enter, when you sit down, or when your host shows you a room. Keep it sincere and specific: Das Wohnzimmer ist sehr gemütlich. If you are addressing an adult formally, use Ihr Haus, Ihre Wohnung and Ihnen. With friends and family, use dein Haus, deine Wohnung and dir. Avoid comparing the home to your own or giving advice; a brief positive remark is usually enough. In Austria and parts of southern Germany, Servus can replace Hallo as a greeting, but the compliment phrases remain standard.
