We'll also cover regional variations and common pitfalls.

    • use the verb 'lieben' with an infinitive clause to talk about activities I enjoy.
    • ask others about their cultural interests and respond appropriately.

    Words you’ll actually use

Ich liebe es, etwas über andere Kulturen zu lernen.

I love learning about other cultures.

    ikh LEE-buh es, ET-vas EW-ber AN-duh-ruh kool-TOO-ren tsoo LER-nen

Standard German. The 'es' is optional; without it the sentence is 'Ich liebe, etwas über andere Kulturen zu lernen,' which is less common and sounds slightly less natural.

Ich interessiere mich sehr für andere Kulturen.

I am very interested in other cultures.

    ikh in-tuh-res-EER-uh mikh zair fewr AN-duh-ruh kool-TOO-ren

A slightly more formal alternative to 'lieben'. 'Sich interessieren für' takes the accusative.

Es macht mir Spaß, neue Kulturen kennenzulernen.

I enjoy getting to know new cultures.

    es makht meer SHPASS, NOY-uh kool-TOO-ren KEN-en-tsoo-ler-nen

Use 'Spaß machen' to express enjoyment. 'Kennenzulernen' is a separable verb in its infinitive with 'zu'.

Ich finde es spannend, mehr über andere Länder zu erfahren.

I find it exciting to learn more about other countries.

    ikh FIN-duh es SHPAN-ent, mair EW-ber AN-duh-ruh LEN-der tsoo er-FAR-en

A good way to express that something is exciting or fascinating. 'Erfahren' means to find out or learn.

Was fasziniert dich an anderen Kulturen?

What fascinates you about other cultures?

    vas fas-tsee-NEERT dikh an AN-duh-ruh kool-TOO-ren

A question to ask others. 'Faszinieren' takes the accusative for the person: 'dich'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say you love doing something, use 'Ich liebe es, ... zu + infinitive.' For example: 'Ich liebe es, neue Sprachen zu lernen.' (I love learning new languages.) The 'es' can be omitted in casual speech: 'Ich liebe es, ...' becomes 'Ich liebe, ...', but this is less common and sounds slightly less natural. When the infinitive is separable, 'zu' goes between the prefix and the verb: 'kennenzulernen'. This pattern works with many verbs: 'Ich liebe es zu reisen.' (I love traveling.)

    When to use it

Use these phrases in conversations about hobbies, travel, or personal interests. They are positive and inclusive, showing openness to diversity. For example, when someone asks about your interests, you can say: 'Ich interessiere mich sehr für andere Kulturen.' If you want to ask about someone else's interests, say: 'Was fasziniert dich an anderen Kulturen?' This is polite and encourages the other person to share. Avoid using 'lieben' for things you merely like; it's strong. For milder liking, use 'Ich mag es, ... zu ...' or 'Ich finde es toll, ... zu ...'.

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, expressing genuine interest in other cultures is appreciated, but be mindful of tone. 'Ich liebe es' is strong and enthusiastic; if you want to sound more reserved, use 'Ich interessiere mich für' or 'Ich finde es spannend'. Regional differences: In Austria and Switzerland, 'es' in 'Ich liebe es' is often pronounced as a clitic 's: 'Ich lieb's'. In formal contexts, use 'Ich schätze' (I value) to show respect.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Ich liebe lernen über andere Kulturen' without 'es' and 'zu'.

Try this instead: In German, you need the infinitive clause with 'zu': 'Ich liebe es, über andere Kulturen zu lernen.' The preposition 'über' takes the accusative case: 'andere Kulturen' (not 'anderen Kulturen').

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I love learning about other cultures' in German?

    Show a sample answer

Ich liebe es, etwas über andere Kulturen zu lernen.

This uses the pattern 'lieben + es + zu + infinitive'. 'Etwas' can be omitted: 'Ich liebe es, über andere Kulturen zu lernen.' Both are correct.

2What is a more formal way to express interest in other cultures?

    Show a sample answer

Ich interessiere mich sehr für andere Kulturen.

This uses 'sich interessieren für' which is slightly more formal than 'lieben'. It still conveys strong interest.

3Ask someone what fascinates them about other cultures.

    Show a sample answer

Was fasziniert dich an anderen Kulturen?

This question uses 'faszinieren' with the accusative 'dich'. The preposition 'an' takes the dative here: 'an anderen Kulturen'.

    Take this with you

To express love for learning about other cultures, use 'Ich liebe es, etwas über andere Kulturen zu lernen.' Remember the 'es' and 'zu' infinitive, and use 'über' with the accusative. For variety, try 'Ich interessiere mich für' or 'Ich finde es spannend'.
