    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Eine Erwachsenenkarte, bitte.

    One adult ticket, please.

    EYE-nuh air-VAHK-suh-nuhn-KAR-tuh, BIT-tuh

Use this at the ticket counter. 'Erwachsenenkarte' is a compound noun: 'Erwachsene' (adults) + 'Karte' (ticket).

Gibt es eine Ermäßigung für Studenten?

Is there a discount for students?

    GEEPT es EYE-nuh air-MAY-si-goong fewr shtoo-DEN-tuhn

Use 'Ermäßigung' for a discount. For seniors, replace 'Studenten' with 'Senioren' (zee-nee-OH-ren).

    Ich bin Student.

    I am a student.

    ikh bin shtoo-DENT

If you are a student, say this to get the discount. For female students: 'Ich bin Studentin.'

    Was kostet der Eintritt?

How much is the entrance fee?

    vas KOS-tuht dair EYE-n-trit

Use this to ask for the price. 'Eintritt' means entrance or admission.

    Wann schließt das Museum?

    When does the museum close?

    van SHLEEST das moo-ZAY-oom

Use this to ask about closing time. For opening time: 'Wann öffnet das Museum?'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask for a ticket politely, use the pattern: [Number] + [Ticket type] + 'bitte'. For example: 'Eine Erwachsenenkarte, bitte.' (One adult ticket, please.) or 'Zwei Studentenkarten, bitte.' (Two student tickets, please.) The word 'bitte' makes the request polite. You can also ask 'Ich möchte...' (I would like...) + ticket type + 'bitte'. For example: 'Ich möchte eine Seniorenkarte, bitte.' (I would like one senior ticket, please.)

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the museum ticket counter (Kasse). If you are a student, say 'Ich bin Student' or 'Ich bin Studentin' to get a discount. For seniors, say 'Ich bin Senior' or 'Ich bin Seniorin'. If you are not sure about discounts, ask 'Gibt es eine Ermäßigung?' (Is there a discount?). You can also ask 'Was kostet der Eintritt?' to find out the price. Remember to say 'bitte' to be polite.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    Yes, I am a student. Is there a discount?yah, ikh bin shtoo-DENT. GEEPT es EYE-nuh air-MAY-si-goong?

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, museums often offer reduced prices for students, seniors, and sometimes children. The discount is called 'Ermäßigung'. You may need to show a valid student ID or proof of age. At some museums, there is a 'Familienkarte' (family ticket) or 'Jahreskarte' (annual pass). It is polite to greet the ticket seller with 'Guten Tag' before making your request. In Austria and Switzerland, some words may differ slightly, but 'Erwachsenenkarte' and 'Ermäßigung' are widely understood.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Ich bin ein Student' instead of 'Ich bin Student'.

Try this instead: In German, when stating your profession or status, you usually omit the article. Say 'Ich bin Student' (I am a student). For a female, say 'Ich bin Studentin'. Adding 'ein' is not wrong but sounds less natural in this context.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'One adult ticket, please' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Eine Erwachsenenkarte, bitte.

This is the standard polite phrase. You could also say 'Ich möchte eine Erwachsenenkarte, bitte.' Both are correct.

2How do you ask if there is a student discount?

    Show a sample answer

Gibt es eine Ermäßigung für Studenten?

This asks for a discount for students. For seniors, replace 'Studenten' with 'Senioren'. You can also ask 'Gibt es einen Studentenrabatt?' but 'Ermäßigung' is more common.

3What would you say to indicate you are a student (male)?

    Show a sample answer

    Ich bin Student.

This states your status. For a female, say 'Ich bin Studentin.' You can also say 'Ich habe einen Studentenausweis' (I have a student ID) if you need to show it.

    Take this with you

To buy a museum ticket in German, say 'Eine Erwachsenenkarte, bitte.' Ask 'Gibt es eine Ermäßigung für Studenten?' for discounts. Remember to greet with 'Guten Tag' and say 'bitte' to be polite.
