How to Ask About German Cultural Norms Politely: "Ist es üblich, dass ...?"

Learn to ask whether a custom or behavior is normal in German-speaking countries using üblich, üblich sein, and polite question frames.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you spend time in a German-speaking country, you will often want to check whether something is expected, allowed, or simply normal. The key intermediate skill is asking about norms without sounding as if you are judging them. German gives you several precise options: "Ist es üblich, dass ...?" for general customs, "Ist es üblich, hier ... zu ...?" for local habits, and softer frames such as "Darf ich fragen, ob ...?" This lesson teaches those question patterns, the difference between üblich, normal, and üblich sein, and how to keep your tone curious rather than critical.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a custom or behavior is customary in a German-speaking context.
    • use üblich, normal, and related question frames politely.
    • soften a direct question with Darf ich fragen, ob ...? or Ich wollte mal fragen, ob ...?
    • distinguish between asking about a norm and explaining a norm.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ist es üblich, dass man hier die Schuhe auszieht?

Is it customary to take off your shoes here?

ist es OOEP-lih, dass man heer dee SHOO-uh OWS-tseet

General question about a local custom. Use üblich for what is commonly done, not for strict rules.

Ist es üblich, hier Trinkgeld zu geben?

Is it customary to give a tip here?

    ist es OOEP-lih, heer TRINK-gelt tsoo GAY-ben

Very useful in restaurants and cafés. The infinitive clause with zu comes at the end.

Darf ich fragen, ob das hier so üblich ist?

May I ask whether that is customary here?

darf ih FRAH-gen, op das heer zo OOEP-lih ist

Polite softener. Darf ich fragen, ob ...? makes the question sound respectful and less blunt.

Ich wollte mal fragen, ob man hier pünktlich sein muss.

I wanted to ask whether one has to be punctual here.

ih VOL-tuh mahl FRAH-gen, op man heer PÜNK-tlih zine mooss

Friendly, slightly indirect. Ich wollte mal fragen is common in everyday spoken German.

Wie ist das bei euch eigentlich?

How is it with you all, actually?

vee ist das bye oyh IHG-ent-lih

Informal way to ask friends or peers about their habits. Use bei euch for a group you are addressing informally.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is "Ist es üblich, dass ...?" or "Ist es üblich, ... zu ...?" German uses a comma before the dass-clause, and the conjugated verb goes to the end: "Ist es üblich, dass man hier bar bezahlt?" With an infinitive clause, zu comes before the infinitive: "Ist es üblich, hier zu warten?" If you want to ask about a specific group, add bei euch or bei Ihnen: "Ist es bei euch üblich, dass ...?" This keeps the question about the group's habit rather than about an abstract rule.

    When to use it

Use üblich when you are asking what people normally do in a situation. Use normal when you mean "normal" in a looser sense, and use erlaubt or Pflicht when you are asking about permission or obligation. For example, "Ist es üblich, dass man hier im Restaurant reserviert?" asks about custom, while "Muss man hier reservieren?" asks about necessity. If you are unsure, start with "Darf ich fragen, ob ...?" or "Ich wollte mal fragen, ob ...?" These frames work in both formal and informal settings and make you sound considerate.

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, direct questions are not automatically rude, but a bare "Ist das üblich?" can sound like an evaluation. Adding Darf ich fragen, ob ...? or Ich wollte mal fragen, ob ...? signals that you are asking for orientation, not judging. Regional and social differences matter: what is üblich in a small Bavarian town may differ in Berlin or Vienna, so ask about the specific place or group.

    One thing to watch for

Using "Ist es üblich, dass ich ...?" when asking about your own permission, as in "Ist es üblich, dass ich hier parke?"

Try this instead: Use üblich for general customs, not for your personal permission. For permission, say "Darf ich hier parken?" or "Ist es erlaubt, hier zu parken?" If you want to ask about a custom, use "Ist es üblich, dass man hier parkt?" with man, not ich.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely ask whether it is customary to shake hands when greeting someone in Germany?

    Show a sample answer

Ist es üblich, dass man sich in Deutschland zur Begrüßung die Hand gibt?

This uses the core pattern Ist es üblich, dass ...? with man and a clear context. A valid alternative is "Ist es üblich, sich zur Begrüßung die Hand zu geben?" with an infinitive clause.

2You want to ask a friend in Berlin whether people usually arrive on time for dinner. Which informal frame fits?

    Show a sample answer

Wie ist das bei euch eigentlich? Kommt man bei euch pünktlich zum Essen?

Wie ist das bei euch eigentlich? is informal and peer-oriented. You could also ask "Ist es bei euch üblich, pünktlich zu kommen?" Both are appropriate with friends.

3Which word asks about a rule rather than a custom: üblich or erlaubt?

    Show a sample answer

    erlaubt

Erlaubt asks about permission, as in "Ist das hier erlaubt?" Üblich asks about what is commonly done. If you mean obligation, use Pflicht or müssen.

    Take this with you

Use "Ist es üblich, dass ...?" for customs, add "Darf ich fragen, ob ...?" to soften it, and save erlaubt or müssen for rules and obligations.
