German for Beginners: Ask Where the Nearest Pharmacy Is and Understand Opening Hours
Learn to ask Wo ist die nächste Apotheke? in German, understand typical pharmacy opening hours, and find the Notdienst (emergency service) when shops are closed.

When you feel unwell in a German-speaking country, the first place to go for most medicines is the Apotheke (pharmacy). In this lesson you will learn one core question, Wo ist die nächste Apotheke?, plus a few follow-up questions about opening hours. You will also learn how to ask about the Notdienst, the emergency pharmacy service that operates when regular pharmacies are closed. The phrases below use standard German; where Austrian or Swiss usage differs, that is noted.
By the end, you can…
- ask where the nearest pharmacy is in German.
- understand and ask about a pharmacy's opening hours.
- ask which pharmacy is open now or on emergency service.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Wo ist die nächste Apotheke?
Where is the nearest pharmacy?
voh ist dee NAYCH-stuh ah-poh-TAY-kuh
The standard, polite question. Use it with strangers, hotel staff or passers-by. 'Apotheke' is feminine, so it is 'die nächste Apotheke'.
Gibt es hier in der Nähe eine Apotheke?
Is there a pharmacy near here?
gipt es heer in dair NAY-uh INE-uh ah-poh-TAY-kuh
Softer and more open than the direct question; good when you are not sure one exists. 'In der Nähe' means 'nearby'.
Wie lange hat die Apotheke geöffnet?
How long is the pharmacy open?
vee LAHNG-uh hat dee ah-poh-TAY-kuh guh-OEF-net
Asks about the length of opening time. 'Geöffnet' means 'open' (for businesses).
Wann schließt die Apotheke?
When does the pharmacy close?
van SHLEEST dee ah-poh-TAY-kuh
Useful in the late afternoon. 'Schließen' means 'to close'; 'schließt' is the third-person form.
Welche Apotheke hat heute Notdienst?
Which pharmacy has emergency service today?
VEL-khuh ah-poh-TAY-kuh hat HOY-tuh NOHT-deenst
The Notdienst is the after-hours emergency service. In Austria you may hear 'Bereitschaftsdienst'; in Switzerland, 'Pikettdienst'.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
To ask where something is, use 'Wo ist ...?' plus a noun phrase: 'Wo ist die nächste Apotheke?' (Where is the nearest pharmacy?), 'Wo ist der Bahnhof?' (Where is the train station?), 'Wo ist das Hotel?' (Where is the hotel?). The article changes with the noun's gender: die Apotheke (feminine), der Bahnhof (masculine), das Hotel (neuter). The adjective 'nächste' takes the ending -e after die or der/das in this pattern: 'die nächste Apotheke', 'der nächste Supermarkt'.
When to use it
Use 'Wo ist die nächste Apotheke?' when you need directions right now and are speaking to a stranger. If you want to sound less direct, start with 'Entschuldigung' (Excuse me): 'Entschuldigung, wo ist die nächste Apotheke?' To ask about hours, say 'Wie lange hat die Apotheke geöffnet?' or 'Wann schließt die Apotheke?' If it is evening or Sunday, ask 'Welche Apotheke hat heute Notdienst?' You can also check the sign on the door; German pharmacies often post the nearest Notdienst pharmacy there.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

Until 6 p.m. After that, it's best to ask about the emergency service.bis AKHT-tsayn oor. dah-NAKH FRAH-gun zee am BES-tun nakh daym NOHT-deenstA little context goes a long way
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, pharmacies are strictly regulated and sell medicines; drugstores (Drogerie) sell cosmetics and health products but not prescription medicine. Regular hours are often Monday to Friday 8:00-18:30 and Saturday morning, with Sunday closures. When closed, a rotating Notdienst (emergency service) pharmacy stays open; the address is usually posted on every pharmacy door and in local newspapers. Austrian German often says 'Bereitschaftsdienst' instead of 'Notdienst' for this service.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Apotheke' for a shop that sells shampoo, toothpaste and cosmetics, and asking 'Wo ist die nächste Apotheke?' when you actually want a Drogerie.
Try this instead: In German-speaking countries, 'Apotheke' means a pharmacy that dispenses medicines. For cosmetics and household health products, ask 'Wo ist die nächste Drogerie?' (Where is the nearest drugstore?). Example: 'Ich brauche Zahnpasta. Wo ist die nächste Drogerie?'
