Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

When you buy something in a German-speaking shop or arrange a private sale online, the price of the item is only half the story: shipping often depends on weight, size, and destination. This lesson teaches you to ask 'How much does it cost to ship this?' in natural German, to state a weight, and to understand the answer when a seller explains weight-based pricing. You will practise polite questions with kosten and Versand, learn the difference between Versandkosten and Porto, and see how to ask about international shipping. All examples use standard contemporary German, with regional notes where usage differs.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask how much it costs to ship an item in German.
    • state the weight of a package and ask whether the price depends on weight.
    • understand and respond to a weight-based shipping quote.
    • ask politely about international shipping and delivery time.

Wie viel kostet der Versand nach Österreich?

How much does shipping to Austria cost?

    vee feel KOS-tut dair fer-ZANT nakh UH-ster-ryeekh

Replace Österreich with another country or city. nach is used for countries and cities without an article.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is Wie viel kostet ...? plus a noun: Wie viel kostet der Versand? (How much does shipping cost?) or Wie viel kostet das Porto? (How much is the postage?). For an action, use Wie viel kostet es, ... zu ...? : Wie viel kostet es, das Paket zu verschicken? (How much does it cost to send the parcel?). Note that German uses der Versand for the shipping service and das Porto specifically for postage stamps or postal fees. In shops you may also hear die Versandkosten (shipping costs), usually plural: Wie hoch sind die Versandkosten? (How high are the shipping costs?).

    When to use it

Use Wie viel kostet der Versand? as your default polite question with a shop assistant or online seller. If you already know the item, Was kostet es, das zu verschicken? sounds natural and specific. When weight matters, ask Hängt der Preis vom Gewicht ab? or Wie schwer darf das Paket sein? Sellers often answer with tiers such as bis 2 kg (up to 2 kg) or bis 5 kg. For cross-border orders, add the destination: Wie viel kostet der Versand nach Frankreich? In Austria and southern Germany, Porto is very common for small items; in Switzerland, you may hear Versandkosten and Porto as well, but prices are in Swiss francs.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    Up to five kilos, shipping costs 6.99 euros, within Germany.bis fewnf KEE-lo KOS-tut dair fer-ZANT ZEKHS noyn-oon-tsikhts OY-ro, in-er-HALP DOYCH-lants

A little context goes a long way

In German-speaking countries, shipping is often priced in weight tiers, and sellers expect you to know the approximate weight. Online marketplaces frequently state Versandkosten separately from the item price. When writing to a private seller, a short polite message with Wie viel kostet der Versand? is normal; adding Guten Tag and a closing like Vielen Dank keeps the tone friendly. In Switzerland, prices are in CHF and shipping may be called Versand or Porto, but the question pattern is the same.

    One thing to watch for

Using Wie viel kostet der Versand? when you mean the postage stamp at a post office counter.

Try this instead: At a post office, das Porto is the usual word for postage: Was kostet das Porto für diesen Brief? (What is the postage for this letter?). Use der Versand for a seller shipping a parcel to you, and die Versandkosten for the total shipping charge shown in an online shop.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Ask a seller how much shipping costs for a parcel to Switzerland.

    Show a sample answer

Wie viel kostet der Versand in die Schweiz?

This uses the standard question pattern and in die Schweiz because Schweiz takes an article. Wie viel kostet der Versand nach Zürich? is also correct when naming a city.

2Ask whether the price depends on weight.

    Show a sample answer

Hängt der Preis vom Gewicht ab?

This is the precise weight-based pricing question. You could also ask Ist der Preis vom Gewicht abhängig?, which is slightly more formal but equally correct.

3A seller says: Bis zwei Kilo kostet der Versand 4,50 Euro. What does this mean?

    Show a sample answer

Up to two kilos, shipping costs 4.50 euros.

Bis zwei Kilo sets the weight tier, and kostet der Versand introduces the price. If the parcel is heavier, the seller will quote a higher tier.

    Take this with you

Use Wie viel kostet der Versand? as your default, switch to Was kostet es, das zu verschicken? for a specific item, and ask Hängt der Preis vom Gewicht ab? whenever weight may change the price.
