When you look for an apartment in a German-speaking country, one of the first questions you need to ask is whether it comes furnished. German listings often use specific vocabulary for this, and the answer is not always a simple yes or no. In this lesson you will learn how to ask if an apartment is furnished, how to ask what is included, and how to understand the most common replies. You will practise complete questions and answers that you can use on the phone, in an email or during a viewing.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether an apartment is furnished in German.
    • understand and answer questions about furniture and appliances included in a rental.

    Words you’ll actually use

    Ist die Wohnung möbliert?

    Is the apartment furnished?

    ist dee VOHN-oong muh-BLEERT

The standard yes-or-no question. Use it for a whole apartment. The verb ist comes first.

    Ist sie möbliert?

    Is it furnished?

    ist zee muh-BLEERT

Use sie to refer back to die Wohnung, so you do not repeat the noun.

Was ist in der Wohnung enthalten?

What is included in the apartment?

vas ist in dair VOHN-oong ent-HAL-ten

Use this to ask about furniture and appliances that come with the rental.

    Die Wohnung ist teilmöbliert.

    The apartment is partly furnished.

    dee VOHN-oong ist TILE-muh-bleert

Teilmöbliert means some furniture is there, but not everything. Common in listings.

    Ist eine Küche vorhanden?

    Is there a kitchen?

    ist EYE-nuh KUE-khuh for-HAN-den

In German rentals a kitchen often means the kitchen units and appliances, not just the room.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask a yes-or-no question in German, put the verb first: Ist die Wohnung möbliert? The noun die Wohnung is feminine, so the question uses ist, not sind. For a room or a flat-share room you can say: Ist das Zimmer möbliert? If you want to ask about more than one thing, use the plural: Sind die Möbel inklusive? The answer often starts with Ja, sie ist möbliert or Nein, sie ist unmöbliert.

    When to use it

Use möbliert for a flat that comes with furniture such as a bed, table and wardrobe. Use teilmöbliert when only some items are included, for example a kitchen and a wardrobe but no bed. Use unmöbliert when you must bring your own furniture. In many German listings, unmöbliert is the default, so it is always worth asking: Ist die Wohnung möbliert oder unmöbliert? For individual items, ask: Ist ein Bett vorhanden? or Ist eine Waschmaschine vorhanden?

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Guten Tag, ich rufe wegen der Wohnung an. Ist sie möbliert?

Hello, I am calling about the apartment. Is it furnished?GOO-ten tahk, ikh ROO-fuh VAY-gen dair VOHN-oong an. ist zee muh-BLEERT
    B

Guten Tag. Die Wohnung ist teilmöbliert. Eine Küche und ein Kleiderschrank sind vorhanden.

Hello. The apartment is partly furnished. A kitchen and a wardrobe are included.GOO-ten tahk. dee VOHN-oong ist TILE-muh-bleert. EYE-nuh KUE-khuh oont ine KLY-der-shrank zint for-HAN-den
    A

    Ist auch ein Bett vorhanden?

Is a bed included as well?ist oukh ine bet for-HAN-den
    B

Nein, ein Bett ist nicht vorhanden. Sie müssen ein Bett mitbringen.

No, a bed is not included. You will need to bring a bed.nine, ine bet ist nikht for-HAN-den. zee MUES-en ine bet MIT-bring-en

A little context goes a long way

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, many rental apartments are advertised as unmöbliert, and tenants often bring their own kitchen. A fitted kitchen is called eine Einbauküche. In Switzerland, möbliert is common for temporary flats, while in Germany möbliert often suggests a short-term or student rental. Always ask specifically which items are included, because möbliert can mean anything from a bed and a table to a fully equipped flat.

    One thing to watch for

Using sein with a plural subject, for example: Ist die Möbel möbliert?

Try this instead: Die Möbel is plural, so use sind: Sind die Möbel inklusive? For a singular feminine noun such as die Wohnung, use ist: Ist die Wohnung möbliert?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Is the apartment furnished?' in German?

    Show a sample answer

    Ist die Wohnung möbliert?

This is the standard question. You can also say Ist sie möbliert? if die Wohnung was already mentioned.

    2What does teilmöbliert mean?

    Show a sample answer

Partly furnished, meaning some furniture or appliances are included but not all.

Teilmöbliert is common in listings. It is not the same as möbliert, which means the flat comes with furniture.

3How do you ask whether a washing machine is included?

    Show a sample answer

    Ist eine Waschmaschine vorhanden?

This pattern works for any single item: Ist ein Bett vorhanden? Ist ein Kühlschrank vorhanden? You can also ask Ist eine Waschmaschine inklusive?

    Take this with you

Ask Ist die Wohnung möbliert? and then ask specifically what is included, because möbliert, teilmöbliert and unmöbliert describe very different rentals.
