Summarizing a Short French Story or Article in a Few Sentences

Learn elementary French phrases to state what a short text is about, name the main point, and give a one- or two-sentence summary.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you summarize in French, you do not retell every event. You say what kind of text it is, who or what it is about, and the main point. This lesson gives you short, useful sentence patterns for that job. You will practice present-tense verbs such as parler, raconter and expliquer, the phrase il s'agit de, and connectors like d'abord, ensuite and enfin. Keep your summary to two or three sentences. The goal is a clear main idea, not a detailed retelling.

    By the end, you can…

    • say what kind of text I read and what it is about.
    • give a short two- or three-sentence summary of a story or article.
    • use basic connectors to order the main points.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Ce texte parle d'une famille qui déménage.

This text is about a family that is moving.

suh tekst parl dun famiy kuh day-mahnzh

Use parler de for the general topic of an article or story. The relative clause qui déménage adds one key detail.

    L'article explique comment économiser l'eau.

The article explains how to save water.

    lar-teekl ex-pleek koh-mahn ay-koh-noh-mee-zay lo

Use expliquer for an article that gives information or instructions.

    L'histoire raconte l'aventure d'un jeune garçon.

The story tells the adventure of a young boy.

    lees-twar ra-kont la-vahn-tur dun zhun gar-sohn

Use raconter for a narrative. L'histoire can mean 'the story' or 'the history', depending on context.

Le personnage principal veut rentrer chez lui.

The main character wants to go home.

    luh pair-so-nazh pran-see-pal vuh rahn-tray shay lwee

Use this to state the main goal or problem of a character in a story.

En résumé, le texte montre que la famille est importante.

In summary, the text shows that family is important.

ahn ray-zoo-may, luh tekst montr kuh la famiy ay tan-por-tahn

Use en résumé to begin your final summary sentence. It signals that you are giving the main point.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A simple summary often follows this pattern: Ce texte + parle de / raconte / explique + [main topic]. Then add one key detail with qui or que: Ce texte parle d'un homme qui cherche son chien. L'article explique que le recyclage est facile. For a story, you can add Le personnage principal veut... to state the main goal. Finish with En résumé, ... to give the main point. This keeps your answer short and focused.

    When to use it

Use these patterns when a teacher asks De quoi parle le texte ? or Résume le texte en quelques phrases. For an article, prefer parler de or expliquer. For a story, prefer raconter and le personnage principal. Do not list every event. Choose one or two main points. If you are unsure, say Le texte parle surtout de... ('The text is mainly about...'). This is honest and still correct.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    De quoi parle l'article ?

What is the article about?duh kwa parl lar-teekl
    B

L'article explique comment trier les déchets à la maison.

    The article explains how to sort waste at home.lar-teekl ex-pleek koh-mahn tree-ay lay day-shay a la may-zohn
    A

Et l'histoire ? Tu peux la résumer ?

And the story? Can you summarize it?ay lees-twar? too puh la ray-zoo-may
    B

Oui. L'histoire raconte l'aventure d'une fille qui veut aider son village. En résumé, elle apprend à demander de l'aide.

Yes. The story tells the adventure of a girl who wants to help her village. In summary, she learns to ask for help.wee. lees-twar ra-kont la-vahn-tur dun feey kee vuh ay-day sohn vee-lazh. ahn ray-zoo-may, el a-prahn a duh-mahn-day duh led

A little context goes a long way

In French classrooms, a summary is usually expected to be brief and structured, not a full retelling. Teachers often ask for 'deux ou trois phrases' and may prefer the present tense for the plot. In more formal writing, you may see il s'agit de instead of parle de, but in everyday speech parler de is perfectly natural. Regional French varies in accent, not in these basic patterns.

    One thing to watch for

Retelling every event: D'abord il se lève, ensuite il mange, ensuite il part, ensuite...

Try this instead: Choose only the main point. Say: Ce texte raconte la journée d'un garçon qui va à l'école. En résumé, il apprend à être courageux. Use ensuite only for one or two important steps, not for every action.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'This article is about recycling' in French?

    Show a sample answer

    Cet article parle du recyclage.

Parler de is the standard pattern for the topic of an article. You can also say Cet article traite du recyclage in a more formal style.

2Which verb is better for a story: expliquer or raconter?

    Show a sample answer

    raconter

Raconter means 'to tell' a story. Expliquer is better for an article that gives information or instructions.

3Give a two-sentence summary of a story about a boy who loses his dog and finds it.

    Show a sample answer

L'histoire raconte l'aventure d'un garçon qui perd son chien. En résumé, il le retrouve grâce à ses amis.

The first sentence states the topic and main character. The second gives the main outcome. Other details, such as where or how, are optional and would make the summary too long.

    Take this with you

To summarize in French, say what the text is about, add one main detail, and finish with En résumé. Keep it to two or three sentences.
