French for Intermediate Learners: Summarizing Key Points at the End of a Discussion
Learn to wrap up a French conversation by summarizing the main points, confirming agreement, and assigning next steps with natural closing phrases.

When a discussion is winding down, French speakers often signal the close explicitly: they recap what was decided, check that everyone agrees, and state who does what next. This lesson gives you the sentence frames and connectors to do that smoothly. You will learn to introduce a summary, list two or three key points, confirm understanding, and end with a clear next step. The focus is on wrapping up, not on paraphrasing what someone else said.
By the end, you can…
- signal that I am about to summarize the main points of a discussion.
- recap two or three decisions or ideas using French connectors.
- confirm agreement and assign a next step before ending the conversation.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
Pour résumer, on a décidé de…
To sum up, we decided to…
poor ray-zoo-MAY, on ah day-see-DAY duh
Standard neutral opener for a summary in a meeting or group discussion.
Si je comprends bien, tout le monde est d'accord sur…
If I understand correctly, everyone agrees on…
see zhuh kom-PRAHN byan, too luh mond ay dah-KOR sewr
Checks agreement before you close; softer than asking directly if people agree.
Les points clés sont…
The key points are…
lay pwan klay son
Introduces a short list; usually followed by two or three items, not a long speech.
Donc, pour récapituler…
So, to recap…
donk, poor ray-ka-pee-tew-LAY
Slightly more formal; common in workplace French in France and Canada.
On se met d'accord là-dessus ?
Are we agreed on that?
on suh may dah-KOR la-duh-SEW
Friendly confirmation question; 'là-dessus' refers back to the summary just given.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A natural closing summary often follows this shape: signal + recap + confirmation + next step. For example: 'Pour résumer, on garde le budget actuel et on reporte la réunion. Tout le monde est d'accord ? Je vous envoie le compte rendu demain.' The signal ('Pour résumer') tells listeners you are closing. The recap uses present tense for decisions that are now settled. The confirmation question invites a quick yes or a correction. The next step names one action and one person. Keep the recap to two or three items; French speakers often use 'd'abord', 'ensuite', and 'enfin' to order them.
When to use it
Use these frames at the end of a meeting, a class discussion, or a friendly planning conversation. In a formal meeting, prefer 'Pour récapituler' or 'En résumé'; in a relaxed conversation, 'Bon, si on résume…' sounds natural. If you are not the chair, you can still summarize with 'Si je peux résumer…' to ask for the floor politely. In Quebec, 'on se met d'accord' is common; in France, 'on est d'accord' is equally natural. Avoid summarizing before the discussion is actually finished; wait for a pause or for the chair to ask for a conclusion.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Bon, on a parlé du budget et du calendrier. Pour résumer, on garde le budget actuel et on décale la livraison à juin.
Okay, we talked about the budget and the schedule. To sum up, we keep the current budget and move delivery to June.bon, on ah par-LAY dew bew-ZHAY ay dew ka-lahn-DREE-yuh. poor ray-zoo-MAY, on gard luh bew-ZHAY ak-tew-EL ay on day-KAL la lee-vee-ZYON ah zhwenOui, c'est bien ça. Si je comprends bien, on ne change pas le nombre de personnes sur le projet.
Yes, that's right. If I understand correctly, we are not changing the number of people on the project.wee, say byan sa. see zhuh kom-PRAHN byan, on nuh shahnzh pah luh non-bruh duh pair-SON sewr luh pro-ZHAYExact. Donc, pour récapituler : budget inchangé, livraison en juin, et même équipe. On se met d'accord là-dessus ?
Exactly. So, to recap: budget unchanged, delivery in June, and the same team. Are we agreed on that?eg-ZAKT. donk, poor ray-ka-pee-tew-LAY: bew-ZHAY an-shahn-ZHAY, lee-vee-ZYON ahn zhwen, ay mem ay-KEEP. on suh may dah-KOR la-duh-SEWD'accord. In French workplace and classroom settings, ending a discussion with an explicit summary is seen as clear and considerate, not abrupt. The person who called the meeting often summarizes, but anyone can ask to do so with 'Si je peux résumer…'. Register matters: 'récapituler' and 'compte rendu' suit formal meetings, while 'bon, on résume' fits friends planning a trip. In Canada, 'compte rendu' and 'procès-verbal' are both used, with 'procès-verbal' more formal.
One thing to watch for
Using 'finalement' to mean 'finally, to conclude' at the end of a summary, as in 'Finalement, on a décidé…'
Try this instead: 'Finalement' usually means 'in the end' or 'after all', often marking a change from what was expected: 'Finalement, on a choisi juin, pas mai.' To close a summary, use 'Pour conclure', 'En résumé', or 'Pour finir'. Example: 'Pour conclure, on garde le budget actuel.'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You want to signal that you are about to summarize the main points. Which phrase fits best?
Show a sample answer
Pour résumer, on a décidé de…
This phrase directly announces a summary and is neutral in register. 'En résumé' or 'Pour récapituler' would also work, especially in more formal settings.
2A colleague says 'On se met d'accord là-dessus ?' What are they asking?
Show a sample answer
They are asking whether everyone agrees on the summary just given.
'Là-dessus' refers back to the points just summarized. A simple 'Oui, d'accord' or a correction is an appropriate reply.
3Turn this into a closing next step: 'Je rédige le compte rendu.' Add a time and a recipient.
Show a sample answer
Je rédige le compte rendu et je l'envoie à toute l'équipe demain matin.
Adding a recipient and a time makes the next step concrete. Other valid answers could name a different recipient or time, as long as the action stays clear.
To close a French discussion, signal your summary, recap two or three points, confirm agreement, and name one clear next step.
