Useful pattern
The most useful frame is Est-ce que je peux avoir + [item] + s'il vous plaît ? For example: Est-ce que je peux avoir un sac ? (Can I have a bag?) and Est-ce que je peux avoir une boîte ? (Can I have a box?). You can also use Je voudrais + [item], which is very common in shops: Je voudrais un sac, s'il vous plaît. Note that un sac is masculine and une boîte is feminine, so the article changes: un sac, une boîte.
When to use it
Use these requests at the checkout, at a market stall, or at a bakery. If the cashier asks 'Vous voulez un sac ?' (Do you want a bag?), answer Oui, s'il vous plaît or Non, merci. If you need a specific type, add the material or purpose: un sac en plastique (plastic bag), un sac en papier (paper bag), un sac réutilisable (reusable bag). In some regions, a bag for groceries may be called un sac à provisions, but un sac is understood everywhere.

In France, single-use plastic bags are largely banned, so cashiers often sell reusable bags or ask if you have your own. In Belgium and Switzerland, the same polite patterns work, but shop staff may be more likely to ask 'Vous avez un sac ?' rather than offering one. In Quebec, you may hear un sac réutilisable and prices in dollars; the request phrases remain the same.
One thing to watch for
Using 'Je peux avoir un sac ?' without s'il vous plaît or with an imperative tone.
Try this instead: Add s'il vous plaît or use Je voudrais: Je voudrais un sac, s'il vous plaît. This sounds polite and natural in shops.
